* Alderman Makes Whisper About Jaywalker Tax

"I would sure hate to have this be viewed as another source of revenue for the city. They're ticketing cars. Now, they're going to start ticketing people. I see the potential for this to get a little out of hand," said Alderman Joe Moore (49th).

From the Alderman that brought the Foie Gras issue to City Council comes this quote. Please Alderman Moore with the Special Service Area taxes (19 and 24) you approved, you are going to complain about this?

Have some backbone Alderman Moore. Show some courage Alderman Moore. Abolish Special Service Area tax 19 and 24. That will save the taxpayers close to a 1/2 million dollars a year.

We have the highest tax rate in the Country. The City Council is talking about raising taxes to pay for Millenium Park. How about cutting out the graft and corruption instead of continuously looking for revenue streams?

NYC and DC both aggressively ticket jaywalkers, particularly in high traffic/foot traffic areas (such as 5th Ave. in NYC and Connecticut Ave. in DC). It's another revenue-generating activity centered in areas where the cities can get the biggest bang for its buck.

That said, some RP police prefer to pursue 5', 100 lb. white women for silly infractions (my Vespa was on the sidewalk for all of 5 ft.) rather than go after the drug dealers. Speaking from personal experience.
