Attorney Westgard falsely points out.....>No money comes from DevCorp, by the way.

The correct answer is these lazy janitors have three supervisors that should be keeping tabs on them on on the taxpayer dime.

The executive director Kimberly Bares... about $55,000 a year.

The SSA Manager Rene Carmergo at 47,000 a year.

SSA maintainence direct Mark Semon at about 40,000 a year. See he double dips, taking a SSA #19 and a SSA #24 salary.

>They are people who are coming from a troubled situation, and don't have good work skills. So they screw up, and they don't get paid much. ...Part of the point is to help people who don't have a lot of skills or opportunities.

I guess when some see these men sweeping the streets and shoveling the snow in our business districts, they think, "Oh, look, isn't that nice?" I feel sick. I don't care how troubled their situation is or how badly they have screwed up or how unskilled they are, this is no way to treat any human being. We are not helping these men. These men are serving local businesses by discharging business' legal responsibility to shovel snow in front of their stores and their responsibility to our community to pick up litter. DevCorp North is ruthlessly taking advantage of the increasing disparity in our society. It's nothing but indentured servitude, 21st century style. I don't want the sidewalks shoveled or the litter picked up that badly. We can do better.

Either your heart is stone or you do not fully understand this program, I hope the latter.

meunderstand just doesn't understand when saying......> "It's not right to use people for your own advancement.

This is DevCorp North paying these workers in foodstamps with no health insurance.... not me.

Giving business or residents a free pass at cleaning their 'hood in the guise of giving some unemployed demeaning jobs that don't train them to do anything meaningful with their lives bites for everyone. It makes babies and takers out of the community it ostensibly serves and it keeps down and out people down. Make criminals clean up as a punishment? Ok, I could buy that. But this wasn't job training and it had several people earning a fairly decent wage managing these folks. A silly waste of taxpayer money on many levels. Further, you want to have a business or own property in an urban environment? Good. Then you do what all good neighbors do and pick up trash and shovel your sidewalk in the winter and wash it the rest of the year (this is law in places like NYC), and you don't make the entire citzenry pay for it which ends up being a tax on everyone, including those who can least afford it, that mostly benefits the monied classes.

Which reminds me that this Sunday is my day to pick up my neighbor's trash since apparently the relocated Evanstonians don't see the garbage piling up on their parkway. Or maybe they were just too babied in Evanston. You would have thought they might have gotten the hint last month when I left the large Glad kitchen trash bag on their front stoop. I thought that was a nice, non-confrontational hint. Apparently not.

Whike walking my dog last night, I met a man who obviously has intellectual disabilities who told me one of his jobs is working as a DevCorp janitor. He actually told me quite a bit about himself as we walked down the street. He lives with his mother and also works as a bar back in Wrigleyville. It seems sad that this charming fella has to work a second job for food stamps. I know that their are a lot of welfare reformers who'll tell you that this is how we keep able bodied people from abusing the system but when people receiving public assistance are all lumped together and not judged as individuals people lose sight of the fact that there are a lot of people out there who are working hard already and don't need another job. They need a little help.

I think the criminals doing the janitors work is a great idea. I work sout of North Ave. on Kingsbury and if you've ever come through the area you've noticed all the trash lying around. The sheriff's department brough a few crews through a few weeks ago and they did a great job. The convicts are motivated because getting a job where you can work outdoors is highly coveted and they are incredibly closely supervised.

I have two brothers and sisters in law who are "intellectually challenged," as they say. They live in Holland. They all have jobs that are way more meaningful than picking up garbage. One works in a candy factory and while the work is rote, she likes that she gets free candy for the family and takes pride in that. They all do something in which they can take pride, and whereby they have developed some skills. There are much better ways we can help the mentally disabled contribute and earn a living.

And there are ways to keep the neighborhood clean and tidy without raising taxes -- fine the property owners, business and residential -- who don't pick up the garbage. I don't care if it's their garbage or not. It's not harrowing work; it doesn't take long hours (and residents can always pay someone else if they find the task beneath their dignity nor worth their time). I can promise you that RP would be spotless.

Prison labor? You would substitute prison labor for the Earnfare workers?

Be careful what you wish for. Earnfare has two programs: Earnfare and Noncustodial Parent Earnfare. NCP Earfare is court ordered. To the extent that DevCorp North uses court-ordered workers, and the threat behind contempt is prison time, we are already where you want us.

Rogers Park may not be as highly coveted as the Gold Coast. The inmates probably have better outfitted recreational facilities back in the yard.

Our business should shovel and pick up for themselves. Failing that, we would be better off creating a few full-time, union jobs, with wages that might even help support a family maybe, in our existing, taxpayer supported Department of Streets and Sanitation, than a dozen, below-minimum wage, few-month stints of part-time work, in a business development corporation with brutal overhead and no accountability.

Gold coast? You must be kidding me. My building is next to the projects.

I have to agree with Pam. I clean up my own street on a daily basis and it is not difficult. I walk my dog 3 times a day and simply carrying an extra bag with me to collect the leavings of others adds about five minutes to my walk and gives me a little sense of pride in my neighborhood. Maybe some of the neighbors could pay me a little for the service if they feel it is below them.
