* Alderman Moore's Christmas Carols '05

No, I'm not kidding. Alderman Moore's "Blue Bag Choir" has put together a few songs for the holiday's. Won't you sing along?

To the tune of "Blue Christmas"

I’ll have a blue bag Christmas, that’s certain
Because our recycling program is hurtin’
Decorations in blue, in a thick, toxic stew
Won’t make the earth green; that’s bad for me and you

I’ll have a Blue Bag Christmas, that’s certain
Because we mix all our junk in a blue curtain
New York’s doin’ all right, ‘cause they’re doing it right
But we’ll have a blue, blue, blue bag Christmas

To the tune of “We Wish you a Merry Christmas!”

We wish we could all recycle
We wish we could all recycle
We wish we could all recycle
It’s long overdue.

Ten years is too long
To use bags of blue
We want to recycle,
It’s long overdue.

We wish that we had a program
We wish that we had a program
We wish that we had a program
It’s long overdue.

The citizens here
Know just what to do
We want to recycle
It’s long overdue.

(All together now!)

So what can we do with blue bags?
So what can we do with blue bags?
So what can we do with blue bags?
They make a nice wreath

We wish we could all recycle
We wish we could all recycle
We wish we could all recycle
RECYCLE RIGHT NOW!

To the tune of “Jingle Bells” Version #1

Dashing through the snow
To the nearest drop-off site,
With a good recycling load,
Gathered day and night.
Saving Planet Earth
Makes our spirits bright!
Oh, how good it feels to do
The things we know are right!
>
Oh-- recycle, recycle
Everything we can!
Blue Bag doesn't do the job,
So let's create a plan!
Recycle, recycle
Everything we can!
Blue Bag doesn't do the job,
So let's create a plan!

To the tune of "We Wish You a Merry Christmas"

We want a recycling Christmas,
We want a recycling Christmas,
We want a recycling Christmas
For a happier New Year!

So bring each of us a blue bin,
So bring each of us a blue bin,
So bring each of us a blue bin,
And we'll be of good cheer!

We won't hush until we get them,
We won't hush until we get them,
We won't hush until we get them,
So get the City in gear!

(Repeat first stanza.)

To the tune of Jingle Bells Version #2

Dashing through the streets,
in those big blue garbage trucks
Mixing up recyclables and trash,
it really sucks!
The landfill’s getting fat,
where will we dump it next?
Oh when will we be free of this
wicked blue bag hex!

Chorus…
Blue bags, Blue bags,
are a bunch of junk
My recyclables are smashed,
and covered up with gunk.
Oh! Blue bags, Blue bags,
to the landfill they go!
But we must have recycling
in all of Chicago.

To the tune of “Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer”

Ruddy the re-used grocery bag
Had a very happy fate
He got to be held onto
And re-used at a later date

Rico the blue bagged pop can
Was hoping for a better end
But Chicago dumped him in the landfill
With his wrapping paper friends

Then one foggy Christmas eve
Mayor Daley came to say
Blue bags will not save our city
Let’s recycle and keep it pretty!

Then all Chicago’s people
Jumped and shouted out “Whoopee!”
We can be real recyclers
Just like folks in NYC.

To the tune of “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas”

Have yourself a real recycling Christmas!
Recycle every day!
Next year we hope Blue Bag will be gone away.

Have yourself a real recycling Christmas!
Recycle day and night!
Next year, let's make sure the City gets it right!

Through the years, we'll always be recycling,
Same as we do now.
And don't forget -- compost those lovely Christmas boughs!
And have yourself a real recycling Christmas now!

It would be funny were it not so depressing. No shortage of written studies, analyses, and legitimate commentary exists showing that recycling costs more than the return benefit. That we actually expend more resources recycling than otherwise (thus causing more polluting and depletion of natural resources). And the money wasted. Let's talk about the money wasted that could go for more important and necessary things -- such as decent security for senior housing.
