* Which Gang Is it?

Up-dated with Comment Photograph

I'm posting this lettering for my gang guru to help idenify for us at the Hell Hole. It's been showing up on various buildings in Beat 2431 this past month.

This particular building is the new Stealth Condos at 1415 West Lunt, across from the Heartland Cafe.

So, who is this gang marking - AVN, up-sidedown R ZK, SDK? And why does he like this stealth condo?

No Roger Parker the Orkin man can't exterminate these gangs.

This comes from my gang guru.

Looks like Ashland Vikings work. RZK means LaRaza Killaz. RZ is a LaRaza alias. Apparently the Vikings don't much like them. SDK - they don't like the Spanish Disciples either. All three are Folks Nation gangs but that doesn't seem to matter much with some of them.

No loyalty between any of them!

And yes welcome Annie. Glad you found my flier. I fliered over 500 cars this morning.

Toto sez: I'm a laugh riot. Glad you keep tabs on us down in Edgewater. Perhaps you can learn a lesson from us civilized southerners.

1) We love development. Bring it on.

2) Yeah, we got problems too. Gangs, hos, druggies, but we're always looking at the sunny side of the streets.

3) Teardowns. We love 'em. Wakes up the rats and scatters them north.

4) Perhaps if you kept the Hughpoligists in line RP would be a better place.

Oooo Toto is actually old enuf to remember Spiro T. Agnew muttering that phrase. It was right before he and Richard Nixon were convicted of being a crook.

John, what have you seen at that intersection? I walk by there often, and feel very safe.

Thanks Chip, I talked to the on-site janitor about it a couple of days ago. Let's hope the call helped. I'll keep an eye on this of course! As for the tagged tree, I think that's there to stay unless graffiti blasters has a special chemical to remove it form a live tree?

I spoke with the guy from graphitti busters one day when they were removing paint from brick. They use a high-powered water pressure with sodium bicarbonate. Yep, good ol' baking soda.

You said “Well you see in order to have affordable APARTMENTS and regular people there almost has to be those elements.” e.g. “hoods” Why exactly does there have to be “those elements”? Would you mind explaining that?

You said you hate condos intensely, you hate Lincoln Park etc. “cuz it’s not fair”. Well, first of all, this isn’t Lincoln Park and it never will be. Everyone in my building gets up everyday and goes to a non-glamorous job to pay the mortgage. None of us are up here flipping condos. You’d rather see “thugged out corners” than businessmen. Exactly what do you think the big gangsters are? And where do you think they park their money? Could it be…real estate?

You are obviously smart, but I don’t really think you know what’s going on. You say you are young, so you have a right to a young man’s point of view, I guess. I hope someday you take those brains of yours off the street and do something a bit more interesting with them than being a thug.

What about what Lily has to say? Do you guys really think that you have the right to terrorize a whole neighborhood just so that you never have to feel personally uncomfortable in it?

A gang shooting in front of a public library. A public library next to an elementary school. 60626, doesn't that make you ashamed of the young men running these gangs? Think carefully about it. You obviously care about your mother. Imagine what the mother of a little kid feels like when a shooting happens next to her kid's school.

When I was a little kid growing up in LA there was Crips/Bloods violence around my school all the time. When I was in the second grade I saw a guy get stabbed to death by a group while I was waiting for the school bus. Tougher guys than anyone up here have given this foolishness up. Tookie gave it up. Lots of guys give it up. Don't wait until you're in Tookie's shoes to give it up.

Thanks 60626, for your sincerity and insight. You have a lot of wisdom for someone so young. Some of the others here should read your words a little more carefully. ...And pause longer to consider them.

I think everyone agrees that gangs are a terrible problem. 60626 has managed to avoid them, and that takes a lot more guts than it does to join them.

People move into "transitional" neighborhoods because they can afford a bigger apartment than they could in a more "established" neighborhood. The cheaper rents reflect the perception and/or reality that urban problems exist in the neighborhood. You knew this when you moved in. The question is: how will you deal with it now that you're here?

Too often the new people get home from their commute to the loop and don't do anything more to help fix the problems in their neighborhood than to complain about them. Most of them don't even make an effort to integrate into the community. If they do make friends nearby, it is only among other gentrifiers like themselves. If they do spend money in local businesses, it is in the new ones that have popped up to cater specifically to them. They barely even seem to notice their other neighbors... the ones who have been living here for decades.

Meanwhile gentrification comes at great cost to the strong community that already exists here. It can totally destroy it. Families have lived here for generations. ....Real families, with children, aunts and uncles, grandparents, godparents, and best friends. And they can't afford the shiny new condos that are taking over their neighborhood. Many, or most, can't afford to buy a place of their own to call home at all. They rent. But they have managed to make a good home of it here. But as the neighborhood gentrifies, it gets harder and harder to hold onto those homes. Homes are lost. Families are broken. And from the perspective of the people who have been living here the longest, neighborhoods are destroyed.

Lily, how could you be so insensitive as to suggest that 60626 and his mother should give up on their lives in Chicago and move to another state where rent is cheaper? I hope you did not put much thought into that before you wrote it. If you did, and you honestly believe what you said, it is utterly offensive.

Clearly you are one of the gentrifiers. Maybe you have your own condo. Maybe you have your own car. Maybe you have a savings account. Maybe you have a good job with a salary, health insurance, a pension, or a 401k. It might seem easy to someone like you to just pick up and move out of state. It's easy if you've got a college education, a marketable profession, some money in the bank, and a car. Maybe you even moved to Chicago from out of state yourself after graduating from some Big 10 school. But a lot of your neighbors don't have those things. Maybe 60626's mother has resisted moving out of the neighborhood because doing so would mean abandoning her support network. Her family. Her friends. Maybe she is trying to find a way her son can keep his support network of friends. Do you remember high school? It's not so easy to change schools. Or move states. Especially not as a teenager. Especially not if the only neighborhoods you can afford to live in are poor, and the schools are bad.

Yes, we need to solve the gang problem. It is a sickness in our society much worse than than the mere nuisance of grafitti. But if you are frustrated by these problems and want to do something, there are plenty of ways of helping. Meet some of your neighbors -- from the original community. Get involved. Mentor a child. Volunteer some time. Donate a skill. You might even find it rewarding. But don't callously tell people they should just pick up and leave to make way for more people like you. If you got to know the community that you are displacing maybe you'd see how many wonderful things gentrification is destroying. 60626 seems like a smart young man. Exiling him and his mother to Omaha is not the answer.

I'm not suggesting that gentrification is a bad thing. On a case by case basis, sometimes it is, sometimes it isn't. It depends on the particular people involved. Fresh money and new people can be a great thing for a community if comes in in a way that shows respect and understanding for the preexisting community. There will always be some people who will be displaced, but hopefully it can be done in a way that causes a minimum of despair, without exacting too stiff a toll on the community. But Chicago is notoriously segregated, and unfortunately we don't ever seem to be able to do it that way.
