Operation "Heartbreak Ridge" Open Air Drug Market in Rogers Park is Closed

Chicago Police on Friday announced charges in a undercover investigation that dismantled a open-air drug market on Chicago's North Side.

Operation "Heartbreak Ridge" targeted a open-air drug market in the Rogers Park neighborhood near Howard Street and Hoyne Avenue controlled by members of the Black P Stones and Gangster Disciples street gangs.

Police concluded the operation on Wednesday, arresting eight of ten targets in the investigation.

During the round-up, police also arrested an unrelated offender after observing him with a fully loaded 9 mm semi automatic pistol.

"These drug markets supplied a steady stream of drugs and were a source of danger to the law-abiding residents in these neighborhoods," said Lt. Kenneth Angarone with the Narcotics and Gang Investigations Section. "By taking these drug markets down, we improve the quality of life in this community."

The investigation relied on the use of undercover drug purchases, surveillance and other intelligence-gathering techniques to build a case against the gangs.

As part of Operation "Heartbreak Ridge," police seized more than $37,000 in crack cocaine, $200 in Ecstasy and $1,800 in cash, in addition to two 9 mm semi-automatic pistols.

Five of the ten targets in the investigation were charged with criminal drug conspiracy.

Good job by the police, the arrests at least make a small dent in the drug dealing going on in Rogers Park.
