* Hot Lips Wants You

Alderman Moore has friends in high places. Like Hollywood. One such Hollywood big shot is Loretta 'Hot Lips' Swit of M.A.S.H. fame. Hot Lips also likes animals. Hot Lips is asking her friends to help in re-elect Alderman Moore. Here she is flanked by a couple of big celebs, Miss Piggy and Kermit the Frog.

Dear Friends,

Chicago restaurant chefs and patrons legally feasted on foie gras for the last time in August. As they celebrated the consumption of the flesh of a tortured animal, we watched and were horrified. Thankfully, due to the political bravery and hard work of our friend, Chicago Alderman Joe Moore, the ban on the sale of foie gras within the Chicago city limits is now in effect.

But the ordinance and Joe Moore are under attack.

Moore and his City Council colleagues have been savagely ridiculed by Chicago's mayor and on the newspaper editorial pages for enacting the ban on foie gras. And the opponents of the foie gras ban have targeted Moore for defeat in next February's Chicago City Council elections.

The Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce has fielded a candidate to run against Joe Moore in next February's Chicago City Council election, and is encouraging all its members to contribute to a high-priced fundraiser for that candidate.

Another of Joe's political opponents went so far as to host a Bastille Day fundraiser for his campaign that was catered by Chef Didier Durant of Cyrano's Bistrot, the leading member of Chicago Chefs for Choice, a group organized to fight the ban on the sale of foie gras. We can only shudder as we imagine the menu. The organization has now filed a lawsuit in an attempt to overturn the ban.

If the opponents of the foie gras ban defeat Joe Moore, a fifteen year veteran of the Chicago City Council, it will send a horrible message to other elected officials to stay away from our issues and deal a devastating blow to our movement for the humane and compassionate treatment of animals.

Joe Moore needs our help. Won't you please join me in supporting our friend and one of my personal heroes, Chicago Alderman Joe Moore? Please be as generous as you can. There are no campaign contribution limits in Illinois, so you can give as much as you are able.

If you live in or around Chicago, you can also volunteer to help on his re-election campaign by replying to this email and expressing your interest. Please, be generous in your donation. Let's send a strong message that we stand behind our friends who stand up for the animals we love.

Kindly,

Loretta Swit

If this were a sincere letter, written out of concern for the ducks, really written by Sweet Loretta, instead of a flagrant cheap fund-raising stunt, you'd think that maybe they would write to Mayor Daley or City Hall, and ask

"Where's the enforcement?"

Let 'em eat foie gras, they declare
Almost 4 months after ban, a number of restaurants appear to be dishing up the delicacy with impunity

Excerpt:

... Mayor Richard Daley is no fan of the ban--just this week, he called it "the silliest law" the City Council has ever passed.

Perhaps that helps explain why the Health Department is in no rush to boost their compliance checks.

"In a world of very limited public health resources we're being asked to drop some things so we can enforce a law like this," Hadac said. "With HIV/AIDS, cancer, West Nile virus and some of the other things we deal with, foie gras is our lowest priority."

Ald. Joe Moore (49th), sponsor of the ban, took no exception to the fact that foie gras investigation is among the lower priorities for the Public Health Department, or that it is not more active with enforcement.

But he was dismayed to know restaurants are flouting the ordinance.

"It evinces a certain degree of arrogance on the parts of these establishments, but I hope the city will act accordingly," Moore said.

Perhaps someone should send Ms. Swit a detailed, annotated list of Moore's lies and betrayal of the people ofthe 49th Ward. You should also send her voting data, showing how Moore has allowed the 49th Ward to become a political backwater, producing tiny pluraities for the progressive candidates Swit supports (because Moore decided a long time ago that it was easier to bamboozle a ward with fewer registered voters; thus he and his lackey Fagus did virtually nothing to promote voter registration).

What ban? Chefs to openly dish up foie gras
They say treat key part of New Year's Eve meals

Enforcement ... isn't even taken seriously by the inspectors charged with that task.

"My health inspector's been out here. We had liver soaking in milk and terrines hanging. He just shook his head. He said, 'I'm looking for listeria. I'm not looking for foie gras,' " said one chef, who spoke only on the condition he not be identified.

That's about right, Hadac said. Investigating foie gras complaints "is without question the least-important thing we're called upon to do," he said.
