* Chicago Tribune Endorses Don Gordon

49th Ward (North Side): Alderman Joe Moore got only 55 percent of the vote in his last election, but he apparently didn't get the message that many people wanted him to focus on his community.

He often seems more interested in headline-grabbing efforts like the ban on foie gras, which held Chicago up to national ridicule. Meanwhile, his ward struggles with crime, housing and development issues.

Moore faces spirited opposition from three opponents.

The best is businessman Don Gordon, who believes the 49th deserves an alderman who pays more attention to the 49th. Gordon pledges an energetic first 100 days to revitalize the ward's "chaotic" commercial districts and refocus on lakefront parks. He is endorsed.

It looks like someone at "Lying" Joe's campaign office has got a lot of explaing to do, as the Alderman looks for someone to blame for this turn of events.

Note to Moore: Try looking in the mirror for your answer!

Congratulations, Don!

ya know what bugs me about this endorsement? Neither the Trib or SunTimes did ANY coverage of the aldermanic races. Sure there were a couple of superficial pieces-but that's it. What is the basis of THIS endorsement? Unless you went to the debates, you only know JoMo is a jackass. The other candidates might be mules as well. And the debate I attended was dominated by ginderske. Well that's what I think anyway...

Congratulations to Don! We have so much in common, and I think his policies are great!

um, Annie, you do realize that these calls are telemarking and pre-recorded messages right? We've gotten a few of them this week from his campaign.

They don't have to Jarvis, they read the blogs, watch the videos, they also have reporters who cover the antics of City Hall. They also have reporters who get the grisly assignments of covering shootings or the deaths of six children in a slumlords building.

Thanks to blogging and people who are courageous enough to speak up, there's no way to hide the lies like the 'good ole days'.

It is my understanding that members of the Tribune editorial board sit down with all of the candidates and ask them questions. They do this in order to inform themselves of the candidates and their positions prior to making endorsements. This is done with all of the candidates present for each individual ward.

Juneway- this is true. I was lurking the blogs last night and the interview for the 46th Ward is available on the Trib. website. I don't think so for the 49th though. Watching the inteview with Shiller & Cappelman, I can see why the Trib endorsed Shiller Cappelman did not come across too well. He may be right about what he says, but he didn't come across well to me anyway. He didn't substantiate his claims well enough and he just seemed "against Shiller" rather than for anything else.

Maybe this was just a bad forum for him though.

I don't know if I would say congratulations are in order. I don't believe that the Tribune reflects the true fabric of our neighborhood. They have historically supported "conservative" candidates whose policies have hurt residents like those who live in the 49th. It's a stodgy old white boys club down there on Michigan Avenue regardless of Clarence Page's editorial presence. The editorial and opinions quite often read like bat wielding vigilantes. They simply recognized one of their own in Mr. Gordon. They have backed losers before...don't the Cubs belong to their organization?

Craig, Forgive me that I don't know how to post a proper issue or comment.
I would like to bring to your attention the standing water/ slush /ice problem on the 1600 block of Farwell Ave. The street is nearly impassable in most areas, especially for pedestrians. At the curbs, the slushy water is 4 or more inches deep. With colder temperatures this will become even fore dangerous. I do not have a camera to document this hazardous situation, but have called 311 to notify them of the problem.
Thank you for your attention.
