Craig, This was a snail mail piece...
My name is Kathy D. Sprattling and I live in the 1300 W. block of Lunt. I have been a resident of Rogers Park since 1978 and am pround to live in such a creative and welcoming environment. I am writing you to announce my endorsement of Alderman Joe Moore for re-election on April 17th.
As you may or may not know, I was the Volunteer Coordinator for Jim Ginderske's aldermanic campaign. This puts me in a rather unique position with some community expectations. Jim's candidacy was not about "anybody but the incumbent". It was about action and a fresh approach to local government. I am pleased to say that Alderman Joe Moore has adopted some of Jim's positions into his own agenda for keeping progressive values in our community. The hard work that we put into Jim's campaign will be making a positive difference as Alderman Moore continues in office.
I was one of the owners of Ennui Cafe for many years and Joe Moore was instrumental in getting that business going in the neighborhood. He was a great supporter for the Jazz Series that we held at Lunt and Sheridan for six wonderful years. He saw us as business owners trying to make a difference in the neighborhood while preserving the integrity of our diversity. He is a person who saw potential and was always an encouraging presence.
I would like to believe that this election is about more than who can make a better "display" of diversity and positive potential. These values should be organic to an individual and never propped up with an undercurrent of fear, arrogance, or coercion. After February 27th, I had to decide between those that remained. Who shared my values? Who would stand up for a community that I have loved for almost three decades? Who would make positive changes without rending the fabric of our diversity into a cookie cutter enclave where I would possibly no longer be welcome? The decision was clear and I chose Joe Moore. I encourage you to get out and vote for Alderman Joe Moore and April 17th. Please encourage your neighbors to support him with their votes as well. Thank you for taking the time to read this and I'll see you around the neighborhood.
Signed,
Kathy D. Sprattling
BLOGNOTES from Dr. O: I find a subtle aire of racism in this letter. That being that she is implying (or at least I am inferring) that she believes that Gordon will "bleach" RP. If that is what she is implying, I have just lost ALL respect for Kat, just I have for Moore who apparently feels SO insecure in his record of accomplishments that he must do the same.
BLOGNOTES from RP Dude: That's nice and all Kathy, but where's the Jazz Festival now? It’s gone. You call that progress? If it was such a great thing (and I think that it was) why didn’t the Ward Office or DevCorp North or BizArts or the RPCC or any of our enlightened, educated and culturally aware institutions act to preserve it?
BLOGNOTES from Hugh: Wasn't Ennui pretty much propped up by DevCorp North so they would have something to talk about?
BLOGNOTES from Juneway: Kat bought Ennui as an already established business. So how does she know if Joe helped start it, especially if he wasn't yet in office?
BLOGNOTES from Pamela: My memory may be failing me a tad as I age but I could swear that Ennui existed BEFORE Joe entered office. I moved to the 'hood Jan. 1991 and I thought I frequented the place in those weeks before the end of Feb. election.
So, question for Kat: How did Moore help establish Ennui if Ennui was a going business before he ever took office?
And, more importantly, why is it that every single business person in the ward I've spoken to privately (about a dozen) say that Moore was no help to them and that they'd like to see him go? Perhaps not everyone feels comfortable speaking out loud but I'm not hearing warm fuzzies about Joe from small businesses behind closed doors.
As for those who inspires fear in people: I'd say it's Joe who plays the "gentrification" card and has people snookered into thinking that the minute he's gone all non-rich, non-whites will be displaced. Before you toss your support to Joe, ask him to swear to the heavens that will smite him if he lies that he'll promise not to leave RP for any reason before his term is up. Because, you know, if Joe were to get a better offer and take it before his term is up then guess who gets to appoint an interim Alderman? Noodle that one over a bit.
Updated: BLOGNOTES from Tom Mananus: Kathy, what do you tell your daughter about ethics and self respect now that you've sold out to a man you spent months calling a "shit" and a "killer" for his association with the now infamous Jay Johnson?

What position would that be Ms. Sprattling, having you head up your ass?
Ms. Sprattling, I was wondering if you had received the traditional $3.00 in dimes for your testimonial of Lying Joe, or has the payment for betraying your community risen with inflation?
When Ms Sprattling owned the coffee shop it was a dump, since she sold it the new version is much cleaner, it coffee shop has been upgraded. it is much more enjoyable going there now.
I wonder if Joe helped upgrade the coffe shop.
Also Ms Sprattling back Jimmy...Jimmey sold out to Joe...mmm I wonder if Ms Sprattling was told to back Joe, maybe Joe wrote the letter & Ms Sprattling signed it.
No not in this ward, not in this city...what was I thinking about.
I don't support Joe, I don't support Gordon. I think they're both douchebags in their own special way.
But when it comes to Heads up Asses, Craig you probably haven't smelled fresh air in years.
Yes, Ennui has gotten a lot better. Nice to see some things get better in spite of Joe.
"I was the Volunteer Coordinator for Jim Ginderske's aldermanic campaign."
"Volunteer coordinator" does NOT mean "volunteer."
At this point her only hope of getting ANYTHING out of working on Ginderske's campaign is if Joe dips into his formidable war chest to retire Ginderske's considerable campaign debts.
I love it when someone plays the race card. What a joke. Like David Orr before him, Joe is a cancer on the community. What a legacy.
I know for a fact that months ago Don was at a gay bar shaking hands and meeting people. It was late too...like 1:00 a.m....hardly homophobic.
The homophobic one is the one that thought it was cute to dress in a pink shirt for the gay pride parade last summer. Talk about playing on stereotypes. I personally found it exteremly offensive.
Can anyone shine any light on the status of the Mega Mall? It was the preferred site for the Fire Station. Then there was all the hub ub about it being a small business incubator... Pleeaze. Anyway, it looks quit empty now. Anybody know what's going on there?
Re Mega Mall: originally it was identified as best site for fire house. Some in community protested and Joe swooped in to protect it. A contingency, backed by Joe, said that it was important for small business, jobs, and people who shop there. Space due north was identified as best space and emminent domain wheels put in action to make it new firehouse space.
Fast forward a few years and Mega Mall is no more and I heard through a pretty reliable source that an 18 story building will be going up on that space (I wasn't paying attention whether it was condos or rental). Presumably first floor will be commerical. A research question for Hugh: did Mega Mall owner ever give Joe campaign contributions and, if so, how much?
In January I emailed a copy of the Pioneer Press article about the missing speed hump to the Ginderske campaign. Here is part of Ms. Sprattling's reply to me:
"It is really great to know that there are people taking the incumbent to issue over his complacency and selective amnesia over community concerns".
Seems to me that Joe Moore is not the only one with selective amnesia.
I emailed Ms. Sprattling shortly after Ginderske joined Moore's Zoning committe, asking how she felt about it. She never bothered to reply. I also emailed Ginderske and asked him about it. He didn't bother to reply either.
Ironically, the whole point of the speed hump issue wasn't the fact that the hump was missing - it was the total lack of a response from the incumbent and his office.
Jim and Kathy said it themselves - they have more in common with Joe Moore than they do with Don Gordon.
