49th Ward Residents 'Getting it Done'
Take a look at this political sign. Because if you walk or drive down Howard Street by Gale Park today, all you'll find is empty space. The above sign has been taken down. That's right folks, the above sign has been removed from this spot. But not before getting the major run-around from of Park District.
This sign totally disgusted the local 49th ward residents so much, they flooded the Chicago Park District with phone calls and emails demanding this political sign be taken down.
Some thought the fix was in. But then word came from Sister Cecilia Fandel, who talked with Daphne, (who works at the Park District) and Sister Cecilia was told the sign came down Monday morning. But the poles holding the sign up were still erected, according to North of Howard sources.
BLOGNOTES: We all know why the sign was put up in the first place, just weeks before a election. Still, these four questions beg to be answered.
1.) Who authorized, designed, placed and paid of this political sign disguised as a city works project sign?
2.) Who had to pay for it's removal?
3.) Did this political sign cost the taxpayers any money? If so, how much?
We, as taxpayers, have the right to know.
Updated: I asked Alderman Moore today at 8AM about these political signs.
His answer, "I don't know what you're talking about," said Alderman Moore. I repeated the questions slower so he would understand. Alderman Moore refused to answer the questions.

Did this sign cost the taxpayers any money to make and install?
Unlike the Moore slimeballs who sneek around in the middle of the night removing Gordon for Alderman signs - this one was done by the book.
Please clarify that Sr. Cecilia was representing the Parks Council who voted the sign should come down if there was no permission given for it to be there. Many others joined in the dissent.
After all, it only took 10 years to get started on the field house and just 1 run-off election and a few hours on a Saturday to erect an advertisement.
Not only do they take down Gordon signs, they keep putting up Moore signs on private property [my condo building for one] without permission (funny how the Moore signs tend to be at apartment buildings where the tenants would have no interest in or knowledge of who authorized the sign being there)
It is good to see that there is a growing disgust with Moore's tactics and are doing something about it. It gives me hope that we may soon be NoMoore!
What about the sign about the "new" fire station on Clark? Who owns that property?
> the "new" fire station on Clark?
> Who owns that property?
The City is in the process of "taking" it, but best we can tell it is still private property.

I have noticed that when I drive to/from work there are many Gordon signs on Morse between Clark and Ridge. However, there seems to be an area on Lunt (1900'ish block) just east of Ridge that has a bunch of Moore signs. Now that Dr. O. mentions it they may be apartments too. I'll have to take a look on my way home. Over near St. Margaret Mary (behind the old Pinewood) there are a bunch of nice private homes with Gordon signs on the lawns. I saw some of these people at Don's party too. These homes are on the border right before you get into the 50th ward and these people will turn out to vote.
Now I know why you guys all hate your situations, that is living in an area you don't like. You waste your days on the silly.
Now all the cheering over a sign being removed? Do you really think that removing that sign is going to help you defeat the incumbent?
I know your just a small group of like-minded types, it's always the same bunch of complainers on all the local blogs, Hugh, Jocelyn, Fargo, Toni...I guess now you don't like him anymore but there's always Tom, Morse Man Dr O and of course the pissy one himself Craig.etc. I hope you all get together for Sunday dinner and rejoice over your important victories in the ward. But at this point you don't even need to blog you always agree, you say the same things.
After the election you guys should start the annual "we got Moore to take down a sign" day. Each year you can all meet at the empty spot, where the sign was and celebrate this greatest of victories, American salutes you.
jarvis still smells...sigh
couch captain, amen!
Today I got a form letter from Kat, one of the former owners of Ennui, touting the glories of Moore in helping to open Ennui and with the annual music festival.
Didn't Kat work on Jim G's campaign?
Open questions for Kat...
1) if Moore is so good for the community, why would you work to try and unseat him? What values of Jim did Moore adopt [other than valuing Jim's votes] and what guarantees do we, the voters, have that this "adoption" is not merely for the purposes of being re-elected. Remember...Moore has shown over and over that he is only interested in the 49th in the months leading up to the election...then he's more interested in French agriculture (as mocked by JG) and the war in Iraq.
2) didn't you stop hosting the music fest because the other groups who organized the fest {I would assume DevCorp North amoung them] cheat you out of money making the festival not worth the time for the money it made you?
Dr. O,
Please post the entire e-mail for us. I would love to read her dribble.
Craig,
This was a snail mail piece...
My name is Kathy D. Sprattling and I live in the 1300 W. block of Lunt. I have been a resident of Rogers Park since 1978 and am pround to live in such a creative and welcoming environment. I am writing you to announce my endorsement of Alderman Joe Moore for re-election on April 17th.
As you may or may not know, I was the Volunteer Coordinator for Jim Ginderske's aldermanic campaign. This puts me in a rather unique position with some community expectations. Jim's candidacy was not about "anybody but the incumbent". It was about action and a fresh approach to local government. I am pleased to say that Alderman Joe Moore has adopted some of Jim's positions into his own agenda for keeping progressive values in our community. The hard work that we put into Jim's campaign will be making a positive difference as Alderman Moore continues in office.
I was one of the owners of Ennui Cafe for many years and Joe Moore was instrumental in getting that business going in the neighborhood. He was a great supporter for the Jazz Series that we held at Lunt and Sheridan for six wonderful years. He saw us as business owners trying to make a difference in the neighborhood while preserving the integrity of our diversity. He is a person who saw potential and was always an encouraging presence.
I would like to believe that this election is about more than who can make a better "display" of diversity and positive potential. These values should be organic to an individual and never propped up with an undercurrent of fear, arrogance, or coercion. After February 27th, I had to decide between those that remained. Who shared my values? Who would stand up for a community that I have loved for almost three decades? Who would make positive changes without rending teh fabric of our diversity into a cookie cutter enclave where I would possibly no longer be welcome? The decision was clear and I chose Joe Moore. I encourage you to get out and vote for Alderman Joe Moore and April 17th. Please encourage your neighbors to support him with their votes as well. Thank you for taking the time to read this and I'll see you around the neighborhood.
Signed,
Kathy D. Sprattling
I find a subtle aire of racism in this letter. That being that she is implying (or at least I am inferring) that she believes that Gordon will "bleach" RP. If that is what she is implying, I have just lost ALL respect for Kat, just I have for Moore who apparently feels SO insecure in his record of accomplishments that he must do the same.
Couch Captain- You're just plain wrong. I can't answer for anyone but me, but I don't hate Rogers Park at all. Au contraire, I'm willing to give up my free time to work for a better community. Are you?
I guess it's terribly convenient for you to throw all of us bloggers into a stereotypical pot, but I'm here to tell you we are individuals. I'd say your comment was the work of a lazy brain and quite frankly it barely made sense.
Dude,
thanks for the tip, that is odd, I'm not sure why Kusper's name is on this
I love CityNEWS and I use it every day, but it is run by a not-for-profit on a shoe string budget. they have a tough job pulling information together from diverse sources, so the taxpayer and recent sales data is often unreliable. I always double-check what I see there.
Here's a more authoritative source for the current taxpayer:
Cook County Treasurer Payment Status
It shows the taxpayer as I. Mejia. The taxes are pretty steep!
Here's a more authoritative source for the current owner:
Cook County Recorder
It shows the property as held in trust at LaSalle since 2002.
> Do you really think that removing that sign is going to help you defeat the incumbent?
Eventually, YES
How does a really, really bad alderman manage to cling to office, year after year? It's a complex question. If we can learn how this sign went up and how it came down, it's progress.
Wasn't Ennui pretty much propped up by DevCorp North so they would have something to talk about?
My memory may be failing me a tad as I age but I could swear that Ennui existed BEFORE Joe entered office. I moved to the 'hood Jan. 1991 and I thought I frequented the place in those weeks before the end of Feb. election. So, question for Kat: how did Moore help establish Ennui if Ennui was a going business before he ever took office?
And, more importantly, why is it that every single business person in the ward I've spoken to privately (about a dozen) say that Moore was no help to them and that they'd like to see him go? Perhaps not everyone feels comfortable speaking out loud but I'm not hearing warm fuzzies about Joe from small businesses behind closed doors.
As for who inspires fear in people: I'd say it's Joe who plays the "gentrification" card and has people snookered into thinking that the minute he's gone all non-rich, non-whites will be displaced. Before you toss your support to Joe, ask him to swear to the heavens that will smite him if he lies that he'll promise not to leave RP for any reason before his term is up. Because, you know, if Joe were to get a better offer and take it before his term is up then guess who gets to appoint an interim Alderman? Noodle that one over a bit.
And Kat bought Ennui as an already established business. So how does she know if Joe helped start it, especially if he wasn't yet in office.
> His answer, "I don't know what you're talking about," said Alderman Moore. I repeated the questions slower so he would understand. Alderman Moore refused to answer the questions.
But Craig, you're a CONSTITUENT!
How could he NOT answer your question?
Too busy campaigning?
It's almost as if his NEXT term is more important to him than his responsibilities in THIS term.
