* Birds & Cats

Okay, I'm in a positive blogging post mood. It has a lot to do with Patrick doing so well yesterday. I'm feeling chipper. Speaking of chipper, here's a little Cardinal enjoying the spring like weather outside my window this morning. This bird was singing away.

And for my new friend Old Broad, here's a photograph of Lucky Tux lounging in her new favorite chair. Ah, the life of birds and cats on a sunny Sunday morning.

My tigers have a special noise when they see a bird on the windowsill, on the neighbors roof, or in the trees.

It's a stacatto yayayaya type of meow and their little smiley mouths move quite quickly. Has Lucky Tux done that yet?

Congrats on your nephew's results Craig! It's hard not to be in a good mood on such a nice weekend. The blackbirds are migrating back and through now also. I was at Millenium Park on Friday evening and it was like an invasion-very cool.

I posted a letter to Joe last night if you are interested...

Enjoy the day!

Aaaaah, Craig is becoming a cat lover! Look how that cat is posing for you in the chair- you can believe she rehearses stuff like this in front of a mirror. She knows she's ravishing.

Quite a shot of the beautiful cardinal.

I hope everybody is keeping the cats indoors. Spring is a critical time for infant wildlife. Domestic cats are not part of the native eco system and contribute to the highest number of deaths for birds and other wildlife. I've seen a cat pick off an entire nest of baby bunnies, dragging them one by one screaming as they were killed. I did try to intervene and it was very traumatic. This is not a fact of life and it is not natural predation. It is irresponsible pet owners letting their domestic animals terrorize the wildlife. kitty is a heart breaking killer. They are not trained to hunt, and torture the prey, its not a quick kill. please keep the cats indoors and visit the website of the same name. Thanks for your attention.

Vanessa- you are hilarious!

Maybe I should give you my speech about all the junk in Dollar Stores filling up landfills after all. ;o)

Are you guys letting your cats stalk outdoors?

That's another reason litter doesn't bother me so much, trash degrades much faster in the elements.

I don't own a cat.

re: litter
Now you are just being silly. I don't want to discuss litter with you anymore because you are just playing games.

I certainly agree with Vanessa in this area. I have never understood why some people let their animals roam.

Being let to roam endangers the cat, who is not equipped to deal with the hazards presented by moving traffic, other animals that may have rabies or other diseases, and, yes, cats are exotic predators who endanger our native birds.

Nueter or spay them, get them vaccinated, and keep them confined.

Litter increases rat (not a natural part of the ecosystems) populations by introducing extra nutrients and shelter to the ecosystem.

And yeah, keep cats inside.

Thanks for the great photo of Lucky Tux, Craig.

My cats are indoor cats, Vanessa - they are healthier that way. However, your little "poor baby wabbit" thing is a bit much - feral cats are a much greater risk to these animals than household pets and I for one think that is natural. I don't grow vegetables and flowers to feed the rabbits. And don't get me started on squirrels.

I absolutely agree with North Coast on this one. My two kitties have always been indoor cats. Having them spayed and keeping them inside has kept them much healthier than friends' and neighbors' cats who are allowed to roam (and inevitably get hit by cars or meeting other unpleasant ends).

The sounds that the cats make when they're watching birds are always entertaining.

Just finished putting up my rabbit fence so that my veggie garden does not become a critter buffet.
