* The Daily Double

I should've started a contest. Another trash dumper really smashed the flowers this afternoon. This one was a dozy. The bags of garbage were filled with dirty, smelly diapers. If you're thinking Eeeww, that would be correct. Clearly, after one day, this is not working out too well. So, the new poll is - Is it a worthless cause? Should I just give it up?

I'd put the work in your own bldg. and its courtyard.

The commmunity effort is appreciated, but you are living among savages, face it.

Sit on DevCorp to get their people out there to maintain it.

The DevCorp people ought to just remove the planters and replace them with HUGE trash receptacles with big signs attached to them saying PUT YOUR TRASH HERE, with an arrow on the sign to emphasize the point.

But do these scum even know how to read?

Craig, I can't begin to imagine why you complain so much. After all, our fearless leader Joe Moore has told us:

- Crime has been halted on Morse Avenue, and it is down throughout Rogers Park!

- Retail businesses are flocking to Morse Avenue, under His loving guidance.

- Oh, and I'm sure we're getting a new fire station any second now.

- Also, don't forget that everyone should stop that evil investigation into voter fraud. I think that must be what's making the flower die.

How about adding a little sign to each Planter:

Bed of Flowers,
Not a Trash Can

If that doesn't work, which I imagine it won't, then yes, give up. Better yet, how nice it would be to put up a 360 degree wire fence (half globe) around the flower bed. That would be pretty funny, and would keep the trash out.

TRY PUTTING A JOE MOORE FOR ALDERMAN POSTER IN EACH POT AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS-

Jeezssssh! For crying out loud. Craig you put those flowers in those planters so you'd have a reason to whine and complain.

Here's a little poem to cheer everyone's hearts.

Oh whoa, Oh alas,
Our beautiful planters,
Now they are trash.

We need a reason to complain,
We need a reason to show disdain,
We need a person to take the blame.

It's all Joe's fault.
We know it's true.
We can't blame the fat heads
Who litter their spew.

So who can we find to take the brunt,
Of sloppy people from Morse to Lunt.

The only logical one to take all this crap
Is Joe Moore cuz you need one to take the rap.

But Sixty dollars is a lot to waste
On people not willing to have some taste.

Do you truly believe if Gordon had won
The little flowers would bloom amongst the scum?

Do you not understand your your tyranny of absolutism is in dire contrast to the necessary diversity and multiculturalism of urban living, especially RP?

Your ethnocentric (dare I say "Eurocentric") tyranny of presumed neatness assumes absolutely that what you label "garbage" is in fact "Garbage" and therefore "undesirable".

If you're going to try take a stance of imposing absolute standards in the aesthetic realm, then the next thing you know, you'll be sliding down that slippery slope, trying to impose absolute standards in the moral realm, and that is fundamentally unacceptable!

After all, you and your ilk, and probably your ilk's ilk as well, finally got your way in banishing Sun and Granville Liquors from selling alcoholic beverages, to some extent on account of a spurious perception of causation--i.e., Sun and GL selling cheap liquor, wine and beer to perceived "degenerates", who then on their own then happen to use language and behaviors which a certain Eurocentric bloc would rather judgementally label "vulgar"--insofar as they are either unable or unwilling to be tolerant enough to appreciate the valid semantic and syntactic implications of using various conjugations and declensions of the word "motherf*cker" 25 consecutive times, and unable or unwilling to appreciate the cultural statement made by the act of urination upon a wall adjacent to a heavily traveled sidewalk and public way.

So on and so forth. There is clearly an epidemic in the city of people trying to impose their own culturally-conditioned (and intrinsically external) standards upon the framework of what is obviously an oppressed contingent of the clearly under-privileged. If one grows up not able to afford a three-dollar rubbermaid waste can to put in your kitchen, going to schools only able to provide approx. one waste basket per 500-600 students (much less one school book per 500-600 students), then how are going to expect that individal to be able to have any cognitive framework establishing the relevance of using so-called "trash receptacles"?

[sarcasm mode OFF]

Besides, the community service trash sweepers need to have something to sweep up.

In a truly just world, we'd be allowed to hold the offenders down and rub those damn dirty diapers right in their faces. condoms will be next, don't be shocked.

by the by, does anyone else hear fireworks?? 8:27pm

Somehow I think dirty diapers are the worst, because they are so much bigger. I've seen lots of discarded condoms up around Howard, unfortunately.

It REALLY infuriates me when people leave this stuff on the beach.

It would be really great if those of you who can't seem to blog without insulting, calling others names or generally being negative could stop and start using all of your energy for good instead of evil.

Really - it's tiring to read and just not useful. It also brings you all down to a level which I'm sure you would not want to be associated with.

There's a trash can there. I have a bad memory, but its across the street nearby and it looks exactly like the planters unless I'm mistaken and it is a planter. Get some guys and move it near the planters if it is a trashcan and then see if people use it instead of the planters. Or you could out up a sign that says a person gets two points if they can toss the trash into the trashcan nearby in one shot and three points if they miss but walk over there and put it in. People like getting points.

Oh pleeze Craigy, don't give it up. We just love to see your public victimization.

I'm sure if Don Gordon or Don Adams had won the election, they would have armed guards on those planters right now. They would personnaly see that someone from the SSA cleaned the planters every hour on the hour with a tweezers. They would call out a haz-mat unit if a used kleenex were found within 20 feet of the planter.

Only the finest bottle spring water, carted in from the Rocky mountains would be used to water these pathetic little plants.

And anyone making even a threat to harm them would have a visit from Home Land Security.

Don Gordon if he is victorious can introduce legislation in the City Council. We can call it the freedom to flower act. And anyone caught defacing a flower planter can get 3-5 in maximum security.

Plllllt.

There are trashcans on the Morse side of the El. The trashcans on the Lunt side were taken away when the man that runs the convenience store there complained to 311 that said cans were overflowing and people were dumping the trash into the planters.

What did our esteemed streets and sans officials do? They took away the two trash cans that used to be there rather than emptying them.

There are still multiple dumpsters in the alley that serves Craig's building and trashcans on the El platform.

I was thinking about Craig's planters as I rode northbound on Broadway from Andersonville into Rogers Park. No trash on the street and planters, all attractively planted the whole way north. There was one, and only one that had some trash in it. That one was very near Granville, almost in our ward. Ahhh well!!!!
