* 'Broken Heart' - Where's the Pod Located Contest

Okay, last week I wanted to have a contest to give a way a couple of Stevie Nicks tickets, but ran short on time. I'm starting this week off with the first of a series of contest ticket give-aways. I'll give the winner a chance to choose from a few events, what they want to see.

Here's the question. What location is this Police 'Blue Light' Pod located? First person to e-mail the correct answer wins.

This camera looks like the one mounted high at Pratt & Sheridan, on the northwest corner.

I was going to eliminate you from this contest just because you live so damn close.

And you didn't follow instructions by e-mailing the response.

And blew the contest by posting this info.

Way to go Laura. Way to botch my first contest.

Now answer this, Do you think this blue light caught yesterday's fatal car crash?

Did the cab blow through a yellow to red light?

Was he really speeding?

Did the camera catch the U-Turn?

I'm SORRY.

Really.

I wasn't thinking properly-multitasking when I read this.

But that's a nice camera pod. It's more discrete, not so big and ugly.

I'm really sorry, truly I am. I'll think of a contest subject for you and send it to you by email and eliminate myself.

Ahhhh, I know just what. You'll get it in your email late tonight.

u know y they look like that righ?? cuz white people wont be discouraged to move into areas with those lil cameras where as the big box ones have an association with ghetto ALSO did they put that camera cuz of traffic or drug dealin/ gangbangin???

hey cityboy:

can you back up your theory with facts? can you provide locations of smaller blue lights compared to locations of larger box blue lights?

do you know if the people in the community have input as to which blue light cameras are installed?

i doubt you will answer. stick your conspiracy theories up your a**.

Craig, why do you assume the cab was wrong and the wigless wonder right? Here's someone who's made a wrong u-turn. Where you an eye-witness to the event? If so, make a clear statement of fact. Otherwise, your backhanded accusations about the cab driver are off base until an investigation is final.

Stevie Nicks...you must be joking!

Sounds to me like U-Turn, may she rest in peace, caused the accident, but TaxiCab could have avoided it, which is not the same thing as causing it but which still means he has some guilt in it. Sounds like he was speeding, and if he'd been operating at a lower speed he'd been able to avert it.

Evanston's cameras look more like the one in this picture: smaller, more discrete, with no flashing light. While I don't know the entirety of the city's rationale for choosing the configuration they did, I do know that it's NOT a race thing.

I don't have any hard data, but I suspect that the discrete pods still do their job effectively. People on the street know they are there, and why. Based on personal observations and anecdotal evidence, they seem to be helpful in reducing some of the problems (gangbanging and violence, not traffic) in the areas in which they have been installed. Of course, this means that the bad behavior is being pushed elsewhere ... But that's for another post.

We don't have gang and crime problems at Pratt & Sheridan, or at any rate haven't had them for a long time. Look up every block on Pratt from the lake clear out to the 7200 block west on chicagocrime.org, and the absence of mayhem is striking.

But we have a really nasty car wreck, which I can usually hear from my apt, every other month at least, and speeding and running lights on Sheridan is an ongoing problem, so I think this thing is to monitor traffic.

well they do have the big ones on Howard and Morse. I don't see too much in the way of viable businesses (they're starting to come, like Common Cup) but I don't see a Starbucks in the future either.

There's a big one on Devon.....and a lot of newly shuttered businesses. Not saying cityboy is right and you're wrong, just observations.

Big blue light seems to flash CRIME.....doesn't exactly attract the upper crust. I don't think Loyola would want a big one messing up their TIF district, hence the cute little one.

Isaac you are very rude. A little more respect for your fellow commentators. Isn't there enough ugliness in the world?

It could be that the newer pods are all the smaller, more discreet models, as they all should be.

The big, older ones are very ugly and cast a pall over the district. They should all be replaced with the newer models.

It would be better if they were altogether concealed, the better for stealth.
