* Power Outage Hits Rogers Park

Last night at 9:15 p.m., the electricity was lost to the residents who lived in the boundaries of Chase to the north, Lunt to the south, Glenwood to the west and Sheridan to the east. Power was restored about an hour later. No word what caused the power outage.

This outage went farther north than that, all the way to Rogers/Sheridan. The outage you reported on May 31 also went all the way up to Rogers/Sheridan, not just to Howard.

Since I moved here in Oct there have been 5-6 power outages. About as many as I think I've experienced my whole adult life. ComEd is useless, doesn't even have most of them in their records.

Bree Cat,

The police gave these outage parameters over the scanner.

Not that this is directly related to the power outage, but...

Right after the power went out, my wife and I went outside to sit on our balcony. We were talking to the neighbors and, half seriously, joking that all the thugs in the neighborhood were probably gearing up for a night of looting. I even joked that my car was probably getting broken into at that very moment.

Well, thankfully, I was wrong. But the person parked directly in front of me wasn't so lucky.

I was parked on Glenwood just north of Greenleaf next to Trilogy. I walked by there this morning on my way to the EL and the car in front of mine had the rear window smashed in.

I called 311, but they can't do anything until the owner of the car calls.

That's disturbing, that the official police communication didn't have the boundaries right, especially in this neck of the woods.

Nevertheless, there was a strong police presence around my block. I hung out the window for awhile people watching - it was too hot in my apt. w/o the AC to do anything else - and patrol and undercover cars went by pretty regularly.

chitownrog - I was driving home and turned onto Estes about 5 minutes after the power went out and had the same thoughts....I passed up on some open parking spaces in the dark areas and decided to park further and walk longer rather than having a smashed window. Gotta love the Rogers Park mentality.

It was kind of nice to see so many people out in the neighborhood during the outage, I'd never seen so many of our neighbors outside since I moved here.

Make sure you have lots of flashlights and spare batteries and candles around at all times, because we're headed for times of more and longer outages. A big beach cooler to keep your food from spoiling is good, too, as well as a grill or solar cooker you can use if you can't get gas or electric.

ComEd-Exelon execs are FURIOUS over the rate freeze, and trust me, we will be paid back.

Look at UE Ameron, which owns Union Electric (most of MO)and Illinois Power Co. (Southern IL). Rates WERE much lower than ours. Last year, TWO week-long outages, one in December, that left 100,000 households in the St. Louis area without power. My mother had no heat or lights for those periods and was lucky my sister did, because the hotels that still had power filled up instantly.

Get ready for more of this crap as fuel ratchets up in price. Get ready for more of THAT, too. Every white paper and article I read on the subject says that the nationwide grid is in horrendous condition and has had no real maintenance for decades. Some people believe that the utilities are preparing for a time of no grid, something I don't want to believe.

As for gas, don't trust we will always have a reliable supply.

Get ready.

i, too will vouch that the power outage extended farther north than chase..I also wonder, i've lived in RP for 3 years and we rarely have an outage. This is the 3rd one to hit Fargo in 2 weeks, what gives?

There are more and longer lasting power outages all the time in neighborhoods and cities that were never before so afflicted.

There is a nasty pattern to it, and it scares the bejeepers out of me. I feel these outages are not isolated accidents.

Home owners and condo associations should be exploring alternatives. Never mind how long solar panels will take to "pay back" at CURRENT utility rates (never mind future), but consider whether you want a reliable power supply down the road.

This is going to get worse, not better.

The outage was an excuse to get family off the tv and the computers. We actually talked to each other on the porch. The disadvantage: it was late we were without air conditioning.

We are farther west than the supposed zone affected as in the Ridge area. The lights went on and life 'might' have been different with electricity.

We did not experience the wrath any irresponsible neighbors. Most who decided to walk outside probably needed the fresh air. Consequently, they almost seemed jovial about it.

I can personally do with air conditioning at this time of summer, but the lights and frig are pretty essential. The other stuff won't kill me to do without for a few hours, but the computer and hair dryer and vacuum cleaner are sorely missed after a few days.

It's hard to grasp just how dependent we are on this stuff, and how it enhances the quality of life to have lights and refrigeration and a furnace that turns itself on.

I echo Jeff who said "What Gives." My husband and I have live in RP for 5 years and I know we've had very short outages a couple of times a year - I knew of these only b/c the clocks were blinking when I came home. Lately though they seem to be getting worse. 2 in the last 2 months and both went farther north than Chase - we live on Birchwood near Sheridan and ours was out too.
