* Stealth Condo Loophole Awaits Governor's Signature

Sent to me by Margot Hackett

This is in response to your email on HB1797, the “stealth condo” loophole. You will be pleased to know that the bill has passed both the House and Senate, and is awaiting the Governor’s signature.

If a condo is converted without giving the tenant proper notice, there are protections built into the legislation for tenants who are faced with no lease renewal, including the right to three month’s rent, actual moving expenses, attorneys’ fees, court costs and injunctive relief. There are also rights for not-for-profit organizations to recover attorneys’ fees and court costs for filing actions on behalf of tenants.

I know you agree that this is an excellent result to respond to the problems that have been encountered, especially in Rogers Park. Thanks again for writing.

Best regards,
Julie Hamos
State Representative, 18th District
