* 1125 West Farwell - Circa October 2006

Here at the 'Broken Heart' we have a collection of trouble issue photographs. In the comments section about the parking lot, neighbors complained about homeless issue that surrounded the 1125 West Farwell property. This is what it looked like less than a year ago.

Dear Craig:

The situation at the 1125 Farwell building was truly bad. It began when the city implemented a zero tolerance policy against homeless people around the Morse/Lunt area of Loyola Park after months of complaints from the residents in that area. Unfortuately, although the police did a great job, no one considered the effect: all of the homeless people migrated down to the strip of land between 1125 Farwell and the Tennis courts. We had maybe 5-8 people squatting there - and that was what we could see outside the building. They were smart about it to: they huddled up against the building (as pictured) and the rear fence, making it difficult for patrolling cops to see them from Farwell or the other side of the courts. We got to deal with screaming homeless people at all hours, which was made even more fun by the fact that my wife was pregnant at the time and we had just moved in a few months earlier (we live across the alley overlooking the strip). It took a few days, but some persistent calls to the cops and Alicia at Moore's office got the crackdown extended to the strip, and the problem disappeared. I really do have to credit Alicia for her work on this: every time I called she gave me substantive progress reports of genuine steps being taken. But this serves as a reminder of what can happen if residents don't take matters into their own hands!

And while cutting down tress with reckless abandon is not a good solution, we also don't know what the developer will plan on doing to fix the landscape around the property. If he's smart, he'll clean that up too.
