* Cabbie Hit Bicyclist on Sheridan Road (Correction)

Yesterday evening cab number 5382 hit a bicyclist - as the two were going northbound on Sheridan Road near Sherwin. The bikers name was Fred. Not Frank as first mentioned in this report. Fred suffered minor injuries, including a nasty cut by the left eye. Bill Morton from Quest Network snapped these exclusive photos for the 'Broken Heart'. A fire truck was called to the scene.

This is why I no longer bike on Sheridan road. If I had a nickel for every time I have been run dangerously close to the curb or another persons car by errant drivers, I would be rich!!!! Same goes for Ridge road!!! Go ahead and ticket me. I would rather pay $25 dollars and be alive.

bike lane on Sheridan would be cool.
most annoying part (for pedestrians) is the curve going in to evanston (where exactly is the border?)

plenty of lance armstrong types who like to shout at people walking with children and dogs to get out of the way. get the f&#k off the sidewalk with your bike!

Dave,
I would agree with you. More bike lanes everywhere!!! I would also agree that most sidewalk bikers have no respect for pedestrians...especially on the stretch mentioned. I believe that is Evanston territory and don't know the bike regulations. Most believe that it is a designated bike path. I disagree.

However, understanding how most drivers treat bikers, I can hardly blame them from using the sidewalk. That being said, bikers need to realize that they need to defer to those walking, rather than running them down or expecting them to jump through hoops to give them space.

I too walk there with my three dogs and get annoyed with the inconsiderate passing traffic.

That's how I ride.

I thought the fine for riding on the sidewalk of Sheridan was $250 and a possible arrest?

I agree that Sheridan is dangerous and could use a bikeway, but the sidewalk is not an acceptable substitute. Nobody ever warns pedestrians that they are coming up from behind and my dog and myself have almost been hit numerous times.

I'm a rider too but over 12 years of age so I stay off the sidewalks.

Use Greenview. Use Ashland. Whatever, just stay off the sidewalk unless you're 12 or younger.

So Craig you hit a biker in your cab.
Did you lose your license - WE ALL HOPE SO.

You STUPID Bikers!!!
Pick a DIFFERENT Street that runs Parallel to Sheridan, hum....I don't know, Greenview, Paulina, Glenwood, Ashland.

All of those streets aren't as busy as Sheridan.Get lifes, get over it and MOVE ON.

Give bikers a break! Slow down and move to the left - honor them. They have the right to ride in the streets. If more people would ride a bike there would be less traffic on Sheridan. Yeah, I ride Ashland and other streets, too, but I urge people not to ride on the sidewalks. Doing so is giving up on bicyclists rights. As I walk on the sidewalks of Sheridan road, if a person older than 12 passes me - I give them an earful. I am tired of getting pushed aside from a place that they have no right to be!

As a pedestrian on Sheridan Road, I have been GIVEN earfuls by rude bikers who ride on the sidewalk. I have been told to move out of the way, I have been given dirty looks.

I wordlessly point to the sign that says NO BIKES ON THE SIDEWALK but evidently these people are illiterate and cannot either read the signs nor make sense of the graphic of a bike with a bar over it.

I hate it, but we unfortunately have bigger fish to fry than errant cyclists, who at least are not gooning me. The police around here are behind it enough just dealing with the thugs.
