* Leone Program a Failure (and Costly too)

Mary O'Connor says she quit because the Park District revamped the junior lifeguard program she ran out of Leone Beach on the Far North Side. Instead of offering the program for free, the Park District instituted a $300 fee, she said. Instead of having an all-day program for six or seven weeks during the summer, the day was split in half. Fishing expeditions and beach campouts were eliminated. So were programs to adopt and clean Chicago beaches.
*****

Joe Moore lies again. Read this and tell me if Joe Moore has done anything for the Leone Lifeguard program. From the sound of this story, it reads like the program has all but fallen apart at the seams. Joe Moore is a blatant liar who allowed the Leone Lifeguard program to hell-in-a-handbasket. His neglect has caused this mess.

And it's not like we at the 'Broken Heart' didn't warn anybody. Listen to Chris Serb.

BLOGNOTES: Hey, Chicago Park District, let the competition swimmers practice on the lakefront. Are you guys nuts? This can only help the image of Chicago's lifeguard program right now. You workers at the Park District want to do something positive? Clean this park damn-it, it still looks like shit today.

Talk about stupid government....if they are worried about being sued, have the swimmers sign some kind of waiver or something sheesh

I dont know much about this program, but I do know I went swimming in the Lake exactly once this summer. Even though I live right by the lake the policies of the city are so ridiculous I'd rather skip it altogether. First, as already mentioned in an earlier post you cant swim past waist deep water. Then I found out that throwing a tennis ball in the water with my friend is not allowed either. Who comes up with these rules?

ps I hope the speeling, syntax, and grammer is more accepetable tot he peanut gallery this time.

I went to Leone and had a great time. I learned to swim, boat and water ski. I am currently teaching these same activities to my children. I really wanted to have them attend the Leone Junior Guard program. What a disaster this city is.

Well know this is another embarassment to the Rogers Park and I do think Joe Moore must assume some responsibility here. My three brothers went thru this program as did my son, and my nephew and neice. It was the place to go for camp. The overnighter was
the icing on the cake. The fishing trips were just more fun. The trips to Nationals, be they in Florida or North Carolina or where ever where such a fantastic bonding experience. The junior guards who completed this program will always remember this program and they made lifelong friend here.
The parents got to go out on a sunset "cruise" at the Parent Barbeque. Mary O'Connor knew every single camper by name and knew where they were, and where they shouldn't have been. Mary O'Connor held the campers responsible for their actions and they built a wonderful community.
Learning to swim is a livesaving activity that many of us long time Rogers Park residents make take for granted. Take a look at Chicago High School Physical Education grades and look at all of those who fail simply because they refuse to swim.

I remember hearing about the Leone Park program. I never learned how to swim -- took it twice while attending a Chicago Public high school, but never got the hang of it (and no, I didn't fail gym because of it). Seems like it was an excellent, much needed program.

Absolutely disgusting how this program has been diminished by our city.

This program was free and did its own fund raising to buy equipment and sponsor trips. All they needed in return was the park district facilities at leone/loyola beach and park.

it goes to show how the city only wants to make money and does not care about the impact of their decisions. if you believe government works, just find out about this program and how the city has shredded its value, and you will change your mind.

I wonder who paid for the program while it was "free," and where the cash went.

thomas,

the kids and parents held fund raisers. where would what money go? the money raised paid for the program and the various trips.

nice snide comment, but you don't know what you are talking about!

Well the Parents spent the money on trips, buses, equipment, shirts, shorts, swimsuits, ribbons, medal, gasoline for the boat, lifejackets, skis,
But this is getting off track. Have you ever been in the gym at Leone Beach? Have you ever been in the warm up room where we used to sit after a good hour around the skating rink at Leone in the Winter. The beach at Leone Beach is one of the most pristene in the entire city.More success storeis can be brought back to the experience had at Leone Beach. Maybe parents of kids that are old enough should get together and form a Parent's Association. Have some fund raisers. A Dinner followed by a raffle.Take your kids to family swim at Mather, Senn and Sullivan High Schools. It is free. One of the requirements for Junior Guard Camp is treading water and swimming 1/2 mile( I think!). You missed the commradry shared by all of the families. Everyone showed up for the Water Show! It was a highlight of summer!

While we are on the topic of the Park District, does anyone know who gives permission for residents to lock up the kiddie parks?

For some time, I've noticed a bike lot on the gate of a park near Columbia and Sheridan. It sits in-between two buildings. I'm assuming the residents don't want people hanging out there all night, especially in the summertime, creating noise. That is understandable. However, that lock doesn't look like the work of Chicago Park District staff. Any ideas?
