* Not-So Communicative Communications Director

Here I go, battling that 800 pound gorilla again. Maeve Kiley, the Director of Communications at Loyola University needs to go back to school and take some more communications classes. Seems Maeve doesn't want to communicate much at all. This person instead wants to play cat and mouse. I wasn't in the mood to play. Especially after having to deal with a gang beat-down less than a mile from the Loyola/Rogers Park campus this morning.

Rather than be open about what happened with the missing computer, Maeve would rather challenge the reason why I would even be interested in such a thing. Note to Miss Kiley, next time someone wants to find out something, don't worry about what they publish. Just answer the questions.

Now, as for the questions I was asking.

* I'd like to know what building this computer was taken from.

* What day and what time this missing computer came up missing?

* Do they have any suspects?

* Who's Social Security number's were on the computer?

* What other data was on the computer?

* Are the Chicago Police aiding in the investigation?

* Was a campus alert given? And when?

* What Loyola is doing to find the computer and rectify this situation?

BLOGNOTES: Some of these answers were given in the sanitized version I got immediately from Jennifer Clark. (Thanks Jennifer)

My complaint here is with this Miss Kiley. This person accused me of threatening her. I did no such thing. I just told this person if she wanted to keep things private, I'd find out the information on my own. That's it. No threat.

Now, since dealing with this very combative person in the Loyola communications department, I've had a source gather some of the information I was looking for in the first place.

I'm told this computer was indeed stolen, it wasn't improperly discarded as they claim. It's also not obsolete either, like Loyola claims. I'm told this computer was up for a memory clean out and re-deployment. And, I'm told by my source, it was stolen from the Granada Center, second floor - the IT department to be exact. I'm guessing the door was just unlocked and unsupervised?

Maybe Loyola would like to answer just one more question. Why do you always try to hide information from the public?

Note to Acid, who's comment was not accepted. You threatening me?

Post your full name when posting comments of that nature next time you coward. Otherwise your comments are meaningless to the dialog.

Better yet, like I told Ms, you want to have a voice, start your own blog. Good day.

craig,

take more communication classes?

what about your english/grammar classes?

"who's social security number?" that should be "whose".

we all make mistakes, but I always find it funny when someone rants about someones education level and that makes simple mistakes themselves in the same post.

Another case of the rampant apostrophe diarrhea afflicting so many blogs today....

GANG BEATDOWN? You are clueless

I don't blame the communuications director for not talking to you. Whether you like it or not, public relations folks today have no obligation to respond to personal bloggers, particularly to bloggers whom they know will slant the blog entry against them and also possibly put out misinformation. Not a bash against you Craig. It's just the way the PR world works.

I'm still not clear why you felt entitled to answers in such specific detail. You're not a reporter, you're not the police, you're not a student. Really, why ARE you so interested in this information? (other than to add to your list of real and imagined "crimes" committed by Loyola that you can drag out next time they do something you don't like, I mean.)

You're right Blindman, these people were just playing a game of tag.

Love the screen-name by the way Blindman. It fits perfectly.

First off, what I do is my business, period. Don't like it don't read.

But then, you'd never find out a computer was stolen and 5800 social security numbers are now somewhere no one knows. But that doesn't bother you commenters, does it?

Second, I could've been doing a feature on gay friendly universities in the Chicagoland area for all she knew.

See, beside this site, I publish Gay Chicago Magazine. That publication reaches out to 60,000 people a week.

GLBT students need to know if a university is safe and open about how it operates. Is Loyola really a gay-friendly campus? That type of story.

Any more peanut gallery questions?

First, no one likes to find out their personal info may have been compromised. I wouldn't like to receive such notification. However, the reality of it is that these things happen all the time, and if you could comprehend how many people have access to your information, you'd probably give up trying to protect it.

As someone who worked for a company that sent out thousands of letters to customers notifying them of a similar situation, I can understand why Loyola responds with a script. It's a nightmare to deal with, and the big bosses will spend quite a bit of time scripting exactly how to respond to questions.

In our case, even if someone realized this info was on the computer, you would have had to crack 2 levels of usernames and passwords to get to it. Chances are whoever stole the computer was simply stealing a computer (not for the this info on it), and no one was at risk. We did provide the specifics (how/when it happened), but really, what difference does it make if you know that or not. Most businesses and institutions would never notify you. A few ethical and law abiding ones will, even though they no this will have quite a negative impact (and trust me, its not pretty).

I personally have access to over a hundred thousand people's social security numbers everyday. Ever sign up for a credit card? Rent a video? Make a deposit at a bank? Think of everyone that has access to that information. Think how easy it would be for someone to get a job at one of these places who has ill-intentions. I have no connection to Loyola and no reason to defend it, but these things are typically blown out of proportion.

And harassing a PR person about a stolen laptop has exactly what to do with gay-friendly campuses?

Gay Chicago. That's the one that's not as good as Windy City Times and Chicago Free Press, right?

Oh, and one more thing: I'm not sure why I fell the need to pick this particular fight with you. But as an actual journalist, I find your willingness to use your "credentials" as cover for acting like a stalker jackass to be completely offensive and unprofessional.

Your blog would be so much more valuable if you grew up a little bit.

It depends on what you call good.

Neither of the other two mentioned papers is in the City of Chicago's - Hall of Fame.

Both papers mentioned can't hold a candle to my papers advertising revenue.

In thiry one years, we've never been sued or lost someones private information.

While the others continue to copy our style and move more to the entertainment coverage of the community and undercut their own ratecards to sell ads, break community boycotts by accepting ads from Coors makes them better than us.

Well, they I guess they are then. But consider this Amy. Ask yourself why at the end of the week, you can't find a copy of our magazine on the news stands or in the boxes, but you can find plenty of WCT's and CFP's?

Craig Gernhardt said...

And one more thing Ms. Smartypants Journalist.

I give my full time employees a good living wage and full health coverage despite the rising health insurance costs.

The other's, I would bet a hundred dollars to you, those other two papers can't say they do the same thing for all their full time employees.

Food for thought before sticking you foot in your mouth next time.

Craig Gernhardt said...

To Acidhead, (Michael James, is that you?) who's comments are no longer accepted here.

What Amy has now done, has added a new menu to the Hell Hole weekly content.

I've got lots of Loyola readers, so from now on I'll will be doing a once a week feature on Loyola University issues.

For some reason Amy has chosen to come on a defend Loyola and the pr lady who's covering up 5800 social security numbers taken were by someone. The mainstream media is now covering the exclusive story I broke yesterday. Funny how that works huh?

That's journalism folks. Not that stuff Amy does.

FYI Acidhead: Like I said, want to have your voice heard? Start your own blog and see how many readers you get a day.

Now that's a ha-ha back to you. I'll keep my very popular style of jounalism going the way it's been going. It's worked darn well so far. You and Amy keep reading and commenting. Thank you very much.

Just one more piece of advice for Loyola or those choosing to bash me and defend their actions.

Imagine a potential family wanting to check out universities for their children to attend.

How many of those parents would choose to visit Loyola even once after google searching Loyola U and having suddenly seeing The 'Broken Heart' on the search engine screen, then clicking the site to find out what the neighborhood really looks like?

Just curious, as another former journalist and current pr professional, you do identify which publication you are calling on behalf of, don't you? Also, I like to read your blog, Craig. Sometimes it is really informative and helpful since I've only lived in RP since April, but I find it sort of whiney on your part when someone criticizes you and then you reply "don't like it, don't read it." You can't always have positive feedback. Just have to roll with the punches sometimes and take the kooks for what they're worth,

lol moz said...

You have no idea what I do for a living. (Hint: it doesn't involve Loyola, Joe Moore, the Heartland Cafe, or anyone else on your enemies list. It is possible for people to disagree with you and not be one of "them.")

As to your "exclusive story," I read it in the Trib online before you posted anything here.

And according to your own post, Loyola filed a police report and notified all the affected students. How is this a cover-up? Because they wouldn't talk to YOU? Again I ask, why should they?

Congrats on being a good employer and providing benefits, however.

Isaac Marshall said...

indeed craig,

loyola contacted the police and the students that might be affected. why do they have to go public with the information?

maybe to catch the criminal, but more times it is a disservice when people get hysterical for nothing. people steal computers, but they have no idea what information is on them or if there is any value outside of the computer.

at this point, they say no one has been affected. why blow it out of proportion or speak to you?

Like you REALLY care about the university or it's students.
