RE: Rabid Bat

On Monday, August 13, 2007 a bat was found in the vicinity of 7400 N. Hoyne. It was submitted for rabies examination and determined to be rabid by the Illinois State Public Health Laboratory.

All residents should keep their dogs, cats and ferrets on a leash when out of their homes. If the dog, cat or ferret does not have a current rabies vaccination, please see a licensed veterinarian immediately to have the pet inoculated with the rabies vaccine.

You are advised not to handle any bats or wild animals. If any bats are found, call the City of Chicago at 311 and they will inform the Chicago Department of Animal Care and Control and the Cook County Department of Animal Control.

This gave me the damn willies last night and I still had them this morning. We don't have screens on the windows and I had a bat fly in my apartment once, couple years ago, week end of Halloween. It's kind of a funny story. The swooping rubbery woo woo noise the wings make is unmistakeable. It woke me up and I knew exactly what it was even in the dark. I freaked it would bite the guinea pigs but I was terrified to stand up and do something about it. I threw a sheet over myself, to protect me. Then I opened all the windows and got a broom to chase it out and flipped on all the lights. It was hard to chase out. When it started flying I hit the floor and cowered there. It kept landing and I couldn't knock it off because they have little hooks on their feet. Finally I got up the courage to stay up with the broom and try to shoo it while it was flying. I looked at the reflection in the window and there's me in a sheet like a ghost waving my broom at a flying bat. How's that for Halloween?

Oh and there was a big ass spider in the open window.

paradise, your experience is the stuff of wonderful short stories. Perfect for Halloween. The spider clenches it. Perfect.

By the by, do you have screens now?

No, and its just a coincidence that at least three apartments I've had didn't. I'd really prefer them, you get insects coming in. If you want the permanent ones it's a hassle and the little half screens don't open wide enough, you always end up opening it all the way when it gets hot.

You see some strange insects though. The giant moths are something. And yeah, it makes for stories. I'll never forget the time I was madly in love, sitting in the quiet daydreaming lovely thoughts and some insects came in, looked like tiny little fairies and they were mating. They did this spiraly dance upwards toward the light, and they'd connect in mid air, separate and then do the dance again.

Paradise, are you serious? Did that really happen or are you pulling my poor gullible leg?

No it's not made up... I suppose some people would argue how much they resembled fairies, but you know, when you're in love everything is pretty...

Actually there's a whole lot more to the bat story, I only told the funny part, but an evil passed through Rogers Park that October...its not the kind of story that I care to share, maybe for Halloween though.

It reminds me of the bat scene in 'The Lost Weekend'.

If you turn on the lights a bat will leave.
