* Shots Fired in Loyola Park

Dear Craig,

Really early this morning (Oct 28) at approximately 12:45 AM my husband and I heard about 10 shots fired in slow succession, presumably coming from Loyola Park, north of Farwell Ave. We didn't hear any other sounds that could be related to this, like screaming or anything, just 10 slow shots. It sounded like only one gun. We didn't bother calling 911 as that doesn't really seem to have much of an effect.

Sick of this at the end of Farwell.

Wow. you're an idiot then. Either Craig made this up or you're and idiot to report this to a blog and not to the police.

I called the police myself last night about a very loud group of people shouting at 1 AM. Unmarked car came up with lights flashing less than 3 mins after and dispersed the group.

So I guess the police must somehow know its the readers of this blog calling and don't bother because I have called the police on three separate occasions and each time, they have been there.

I agree....not calling the police was not the smartest move. I know the police don't always respond as quickly as I would like. But I have called them a number of time for shots fired and multiple cars show up in minutes. If we don't call them, the gang bangers and other low lifes of the neighborhood win.

I've attended many CAPS meetings and the cops always urge everyone to call 911 whenever they see or hear something suspicious. I have been calling from my cell phone but lately the 911 operators have been having problems hearing me and tell me that cell phones have some feature that cuts off the first 30 seconds or so of conversation. Usually the operator gets really annoyed because of the bad reception and turns very rude. Has anyone else had this experience?

thanks for your constructive comments. you're all very positive. and i know that the police don't respond, or at least have not responded in the past, because when there were issues with gun shots in the past and people posted about them, they also mentioned that they called 911 and nothing happened. so you all can go shove it where the sun don't shine.

Ditto. I have called about shots fired and they always respond VERY quickly. You really should have called. When I lived at Pratt and the Lake, the police were normally very responsive about a wide range of issues they were called about.

Gunshots are hard to track. However, if enough people call, the police can triangulate the gunshots based on the number of calls made to 911. That's how they would determine where to make their deployment.

Also, police resources are deployed based on 911 calls. So if you want more police, call 911. If you don't want more police, don't call 911.

Hear, hear!

The fact that screams did not accompany the sound of gunfire can easily be explained by any of a number of possibilities, not the least of which is the victim's inability to scream.

Please keep in mind that just because you don't witness the kind of response you expect, i.e. a dragnet of uniformed police descending on the area or sirens blaring announcing the impending arrival of a "wall of blue" does not mean for a second that they aren't on the job. Your 911 call may serve as a triangulation for locating an ongoing trouble spot, or it may serve as backup to other calls received at the same time, or any number of other things.

The main thing to keep in mind is that we must do all we can to assist the police in doing their job and last night that meant calling 911. Please do not let apathy or enui beat us down. Please call 911 next time - every time - you hear gunshots.

- PEACE -

Not calling the police is (excuse the expression) a cop out. Anyone who attends CAPs meetings knows that the more information the police are given the better.

And it's correct that the more calls we make, the more resources are allocated to our area. Not to say anyone should call for no reason, but we still have plenty of reasons to call. The squeaky wheel!

I get tired of calling sometimes too. It's a dirty job, but someone has to do it.

We were up late last night and had the scanner on. A couple of calls DID come in about shots fired in Loyola Park. One was for 10 shots, the other for 14. The cops came back after checking and said it was fireworks.

Wow -- Craig's blog breeds apathy. He keeps telling us how hopeless this neighborhood is, and pretty soon people start believing it enough that they don't call the cops when they think they hear 10 (!) gunshots. Great job, Craig!

Yeah see if you're a Craig supporter or Gordon (remember him?) person then of course you don't call the police. That way you can just bitch about the crime...how long till Craig post another "Crime is down" feature which is stupid, if there were ten crimes this time last year and we have nine this year, it means crime is down...math can be painful I know.

We had two shots fired here on my property, the police were there in about 2 minutes. I will say that they weren't very concerned, a policeman told me there are about 8 guns per person in Chicago, he said with all that hardware people are going to find reasons to shot. Since the only damage was a pin hole in a gate, they said they had nothing to go on, told me they wrote a report and if I found the shell casing or bullet they would like to match it to other ballistic reports they have on file.

SO CALL THE POLICE

Craig I would like to know exactly how you feel about the situation. Now I don't live in Roger's Park but I do take care of my grandma in Hyde PArk and we experience similar problems. A lot of people on here believe that calling the police is the best thing to do which is something I don't agree with but is something that I would do. You see no matter how many times you call the police, do you think that gang bangers are going to actually stay where they just shot from? Um if you think so then you have mental issues. By the time the police come, the gang bangers have scattered. It's funny how most of the people on here can only say they've seen police cars pull up in 3 minutes but cannot honesty say that they see the suspects get arrested. So obviously if people are getting away with what they are doing then they are going to continue to do what they've been doing...duh. In my opinion if Mayor Daley wants to raise propety taxes then he needs to take that extra revenue and give it to the CPD so they can buy more cameras and other equipment.
