* What is he Thinking?

Question of the day. Here we have our very own Bill Morton holding what looks to be a gun. Not just holding it, he seems to be fantasizing about something. What do you think is on Bill's mind?

Bill is actually holding a gun!
He is thinking that if he tucks it into the rear of his jeans he will look sexy and he will eaaier meet sexy women. What he doesn't know is I have one too and when I stick my in the rear of my jeans I look sexy and powerful and attractive too.
I hope we meet when we are both carrying our pieces becauwse it is an easy way to strike up a conversation with someone you don't know but, because of the piece it entices me to want to know him better.
What he and I both forget in our haze of gun crrying dream is that the truth is
GUNS KILL PEOPLE!

GUNS ARE DANGEROUS!

THIS ISN"T THE WILD WILD WEST!

Together we decide to turn in our pieces, we receive $100 each and go out to dinner.

Bill finds out that I am married and I find out he is a fine human being

Yet somehow, mysteriously, when no guns are around, no one gets shot. Strange that way.

Just trying to keep things fair.

Agree with Jocelyn.

Most of the personal handguns that are fired, are not fired in self-defense against a thug, but in domestic disputes, accidents (that most tragically often involve children), and suicides.

And if ever you DO fire in self-defense, you have got a long legal ordeal in front of you, lots of explaining to do.

Knives, cars, and baseball bats also "kill" people. Let's get rid of them also. Face it. If it's not a gun that is used to inflict harm it will be something else.

That is such an obvious argument. Usually a child doesn't shoot themselves in the head with a car, baseball bat, or a knife.

True, it's the irresponsible owners that don't secure their guns, but we have to protect people from themselves-ala seatbelt law.

I'm not saying ban all guns- just handguns in urban areas at least, which is the gun of choice for criminals. Don't agree with me? That's fine.

Everybody should have a weapon in their home and on their person if they so choose. For CCW I recommend nothing more powerful than a 9mm. or a S&W 40. They are much easier to conceal than a .45 and with the proper bullet are just as effective.
Hopefully the USSC which is currently examing Washingtons gun laws, will exhibit some common sense and follow the Constitution which allows private ownership of firearms. I've never understood how the Constitution becomes null and void when you enter the City of Chicago.

Yes Jocelyn, Because it's not an obvious statement to say "mysteriously, when no guns are around, no one gets shot. Strange that way".

If it's not a gun it will be something else and if you think a kid is not capable of effectively using a knife, bat, pipe, or brick then you must really be confused. Maybe not a car you got me there. As far as banning them only in Urban areas I agree with Big Daddy.. stop stepping on my constitutional rights and start enforcing the laws on the books and put all this PC crap aside and things will be solved.

Well, liberalizing gun laws and allowing all citizens to pack has NOT reduced the crime rate in St.Louis, my old town, one bit.

Quite the contrary. Since MO began allowing concealed-carry three years ago, St. Louis' horrifying murder rate, already the highest in the country, shot up over 50%. This dying city still leads the country in index crimes and is ranked as the most dangerous city in the country.

Go tell those people what a wonderful thing it is for them that every loser can pack.

Let's not let Chicago become another St. Louis.

North Coast, we don't care what effect CCW has on the crime rate. That's not the point. What we care about is the individuals ability to defend himself against attack. Thats what it's all about.

Bill Morton says...

"the gun of choice for criminals", and every police officer and federal agent in the United States.

I am a law abiding citizen of Chicago. I contribute what I can to making Chicago, and more specifically, Rogers Park a better place.

Where was this picture taken?

When was this picture taken?

I won't tell you, but I can assure you that this photo does not represent violence or unlawfulness at all.

"We don't care what effect CCW has on the crime rates"

That is a truly incredible statement, Big Daddy.

Are you saying you don't care how many people catch stray bullets and how much the murder rate rises as long as you can "defend" yourself?

That attitude says everything there is to say about what is wrong with the United States in general, and why this country has so much more violent crime than any other developed country in the world. Only places like Sierra Leone and Ivory Coast have worse violent crime than we do.

It is irresponsible not to care how bad crime gets as long as you can theoretically "defend myself". Remember, you may not be the fastest draw or best marksman around.

Have you considered that one of those extra stray bullets might hit you before you can draw?

Sorry, but I want a safer community, period, and I don't think my safety will be enhanced by increasing the number of weapons in the hands of untrained citizens- and we are deluding ourselves if we believe that most people purchasing weapons legally will bother to obtain proper training, or that our authorities will insist that people get that training. What we will have is thousands more scared, jittery people walking around armed, and we will also have more jittery police who will assume that everyone they approach is armed and ready to draw.

I want fewer bullets flying around. I want my chances of catching a bullet not intended for me to be steeply reduced. That's an ordinary citizen's biggest danger in this nabe- going down under a bullet that wasn't even aimed at him because these thugs don't know how to aim their weapons. We have had two children killed by crossfire, at least, in Chicago this year. One was sitting in his own bedroom and was hit by a bullet fired by one gangbanger at another on the street.

And neither do the large majority of gun owners. I personally know of too many nice folks in the suburbs sitting in houses stuffed with guns they aren't trained to use, and the thought of most citizens walking around armed and ready to fire at anyone who looks threatening to them, chills me to the bone.

North Coast, please don't take my statement out of context. The purpose of CCW is to protect yourself, not to reduce the crime rate. As long as we have a system which coddles the criminal and refuses to put them in jail where they belong, we will have the level of violence that we currently have. Bottom line.
Stop blaming the object and start blaming and removing the person that uses that object. Most criminals have extensive criminal histories, several pages long. If the system did what it's supposed to do, we wouldn't even be having this conversation. Until that system does it's job, I have to worry about me and mine.
We probably have the best Police Department in the world but they can't be everywhere and there are not enough of them. The beast is out there and wants to kill you. I prefer to be in a position to prevent that in the event that the Police are unable to.
