Good... though she should have voted no instead of "Present."

And I say that as a Christian.

What a stupid bill...

Agreed. A total waste of time resolution. Reminds me of a few crazy city council resolutions. Banning Foie Gras. Banning chickens. That sort of thing.

Here, here, Jan. Too bad she didn't vote "no." What on earth is the point of that bill??

JUST GLAD I HAVE NEVER VOTED FOR HER-

Good for Jan! That resolution was a stupid waste of time.

i can't swear, but it was my impression that jan is jewish. i wish she had voted no, also. really these christofascist need a smackdown.

She should have voted NO.

The government has no business at all recognizing ANY religion. It frightens me deeply that our congress or senate would even contemplate passing a bill regarding religion at all.

I hope Americans United For Separation of Church and State are on this. This country is in more danger every day of becoming a theocracy.

The founding principle of this country was the absolute separation of church and state. There should be no laws made at all respecting religion.

This bill disrespects those not of the Christian faith, who are a large and important cohort in our population.

Worse, this bill enshrines Christianity in preference to every other faith and philosophy.

We are far gone down the road to a fascist theocracy, and to religious wars, when our congress and senate pass laws recognizing the importance of any one religion. Those wars will not only be between major religions, but minor sects, and no one in the population will be safe.

The inquisitions and religious wars aren't that far behind us.

I'm more scared than ever, especially after following your link to the conservative blog that posted the story.

I agree that it was a stupid resolution (like much of what Congress does) but why can't Jan give an Aye vote against discrimination of Christians? I bet good money that if the resolution were against discrimination of transgendered people she would have voted AYE or against discrimination of other religions such as Wicca or Buddhism or Islam her vote would have been different. Wonder how she would have voted had it been a resolution in support of Jews?

These politicos are hypocrits and so is Been There. We will not stand for discrimination against [pick your favorite celebrity minority du jour] but feel free to have at Christians all you want, BT referring to them at fascists.

Well, BT, I'd say that it takes one to know one.

Oooh, the poor Christians suffering descrimination. B.S.

Where in this country are Christians descriminated against?

Resolutions like this one are set-ups. You vote against it and suddenly you are evil. Even the commentators on this so called conservative web site Craig provided a link to think this resolution was nothing but B.S.

I'm with dave, rpkelly, blogpants, been there, the north coast, and shak. This was a stupid thing to propose and an even stupider thing to vote for, and I'm happy she didn't.

I'm a Christian and am fine with Jan not voting yes on this. Dumb bill.

I heart our Congresswoman Jan!

pamela, perhaps you should read more than the broken heart. the "christians" that elected the moron in chief because he claimed to talk to god, and because he, like the last three war criminal presidents promised to protect the little cell blobs, are doing their best to bring on armageddon, so that they will all be sucked into heaven. i guess they are planning to take all the money on the planet with them because they sure have stuffed their pockets with it.
check out the number of complaints from soldiers who are being proselytized in their units, and nothing is done. then check out eric prince, sole owner of blackwater inc, your new christian mercenaries.

so, when these people, who have been killing in the name of jesus (over a million since 2000) try to call themselves discriminated against, people laugh. too bad they don't start a bonfire with the damn things. it's getting to that.

Did anyone actually READ the resolution the blog provided a link to?

This resolution was NOT about protecting Christians from "discrimination"

This resolution was all about officially recognizing a particular religion, Christianity, as "important"

Like, duh, did we not already know that this particular faith is "important"?

And why is our Congress even allocating time to such a thing when we have so many more pressing issues on the table? We have a war, the prospect of yet another war, yawning budget deficits, escalating oil prices, and many other issues that only a well-run government can address. Our reps are not doing what we are paying them to do when they twaddle with a matter-religion-in which the government has no business meddling.
This "resolution" is not innocious, but is the first "foot in the door" of turning the United States into a theocracy.

Our government has no business even discussing religion, and certainly should not pass a "resolution" elevating one religion over all others in importance.

If if was wrong for her to vote "present" for this, then shouldn't she have done the same when the Ramadan bill came up for a vote?

The North Coast said...

A Ramadan bill, too?

I must start keeping up with all the legislation. How DOES a citizen keep up with all the wacky and destructive initiatives at the national, state, and local levels, and still make a living, and pursue a truly (comparatively) gratifying hobby?

Is THIS what our leaders are doing with our money and time while the economy sputters and we have fallen to the last rank among developed countries in every measure of civilization?

Have these chumps taken notice of the fact that Atlanta and the rest of the southeast are in the grips of a catastrophic drought and have only 70 days drinking water left? Have their local goons noticed?

Here we have another potential humanitarian disaster setting up,and our clowns in congress are talking about religion.

We rank LAST in educational attainment, LAST in affordable health care,LAST in public transit,FIRST in energy consumption per capita, FIRST in violent crime, FIRST in births to teen mommas, FIRST in infant mortality.

Note that I am comparing us to Western Europe and Japan. I'm not interested in how much better we are than Sudan or the Ivory Coast or Honduras.

I think this blog thread is very amusing.
Check your history out and you will find that during the great wave of Irish and German immigration in the late 1880s, the majority protestant who ran this country demanded that religion be taken out of our schools. Why? Because they were afraid that all the Catholic immigrants would demand that the schools teach their doctrine instead of the protestant doctorine. They demanded separation of Church and State because they were fearful of the Pope and their belief was that if Catholics had control and their religion spread, we would be ruled by Rome. Very funny, but true.
What I find most telling in my life as a Christian is:
[Matthew 6:5-6] "And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you."
Separation of Church and State is not something new. And it has made our country stronger, not weaker. So Merry Christmas to you. Happy Holidays to all the rest. Most Christians support tolerance.
