The IVI-IPO had their endorsement session for the 7th district State Senate race. Personally, I find this a 'bought and paid for' endorsement. Other's feel differently. Candidates that know how the system works, try to stack the deck by paying dues for members to vote for them. Here's how the vote initially turned out.
Suzanne Elders: 7-yea, 7-nay, 1-abstain.
Heather Steans: 7-yea, 8- nay
Both motions failed and no recommendation went to the Board.
Blognotes: But wait, now it gets interesting. Our buddy, Joe Moore flunky and North side IVI-IPO board member Wayne Frazier isn't happy with the results. Wayne wants the decision changed. Wayne wants a do-over.
My understanding is that there were a couple of new members who recently signed up named Heather and Heather's husband, Leo Smith. They were allowed to vote, although they had only been members for just a mere 29 days rather than the 60 days required. Slick Wayne Frazier wants the two Stearn's votes to count for the candidate named Heather Stearns. Imagine that.
Updated: IVI-IPO Board member Aviva Miriam Patt responds: " First, if there is no recommendation from the membership, the Board can make any endorsement it wants to so there's nothing wrong with Wayne (or anyone else) trying to get the Board to endorse a specific candidate.
But this situation is a little more complicated than that.
Two of the votes in favor of Steans and opposed to Elders were cast by members not eligible to vote (person checking in members misread the date they had joined and mistakenly gave them voting cards).
The Steering Committee ruled that those votes should not be counted and the report is going to the Board with a 7-5-1 motion to recommend Elders.
The Board can either ratify the recommendation or send it back to the members and ask them to have a new session.

The IVI-IPO endorsement process has been a total sham for 20 years. You should be commended for holding up their nonsense up to public scrutiny!

for those that listen to craig, and therefore DON'T know jack about the democratic process- the 7th district race is shaping up to be very interesting. personally, i think that either way, we will have a fine new state senator. both candidates are good, qualified women. the 40th ward dems have endorsed heather ateans (no r), ivo, and dfa have endorsed suzanne. it is a contest. it is a good thing. do joe, jan and all back heather? yes they do. . would joe and dave have backed suzanne if she had had the votes? yes. will they lie, cheat and steal to get her elected? no.
i'm still waiting for that "mountain of evidence" that joe did anything wrong in his own election. get real. these people are decent progressives that want to see the people decide. they are happy for the contest. it is the american way. get over it.
