* News Star Police Blotter - The 'Crime is Down' Report

ARREST
• Police arrested a man after he allegedly robbed two Evanston men on the 1600 block of West Howard Street sometime around 10:30 p.m. Nov. 24.

The 22- and 19-year-old victims told police that a man allegedly pointed a gun at them and said, "Don't move," and then went through the older victim's pockets and took $20. Police spotted a man who matched the victim's description on the 1500 block of West Howard. The man allegedly gave conflicting statements about where he was coming from, according to police. The man was brought back to the scene of the robbery, where both victims positively identified him, but told police that the man had changed his jacket, police said. Police also recovered a work ID in the man's jacket that did not belong to him, police said. The man allegedly told police that it was his friend's jacket, and that he had left his own jacket at the friend's house.

Charged with robbery is Jerry A. Williams, 26, of the 5900 block of North Magnolia. No court information was provided on the police report.

ROBBERY
• A 31-year-old man was robbed while unlocking the front entry door to his apartment building on the 6600 block of North Lakewood Avenue around 8:55 p.m. Nov. 25. The victim told police that a man in his 30s grabbed him and held a knife to his throat. The man told the victim, "You're going to lose this if you don't give me your wallet." The victim handed over his wallet which contained $15, credit cards and ID. The man fled north on Lakewood.

• Four men in their late 20s knocked off a tavern on the 7300 block of North Rogers around 12:05 p.m. Nov. 21. An employee told police the four men entered the bar and asked her how much beer cost. While one of the men distracted her, the three others pulled screwdrivers and broke in the juke box and video poker machines. One of the men, while holding a screwdriver, told the employee to back away from the register while he emptied it out. The total heist was $450.

The "Ho" was robbed? What a surprise...

If the Ho has no security or panic button, then what does it expect at midnight? It is too isolated with all of the construction in the area. If the area fills, it will be too difficult for this sort of thing to take place.

Frankly, that strip of storefronts is 'land banking' at its worst. The owner has no conception of what the property is worth, so s/he is 'waiting for Godot' and causing the neighborhood to wait with him/her. In land trust, we distrust.

Frankly, there are one too many bars in the area, anyways. Hopefully, 'The Ho' will 'heave ho.'

One thought. The bar is really not doing much business these days. I pass by there late at night and there is no one in the area, so $450 dollars seems like a 'big take' for a place like The Ho in my opinion. That is a lot of beer and liquor for one night in that location plus the fifty in the till.

Frankly, if it was 'a set up' for insurance money, it would not surprise me. CPD did not see it that way, so we must hope that the credibility check was not a front for a possible insurance scam. Sometimes, the best have sympathy for situations and use discretion when filling out the police reports.

There are a few ways of viewing this situation. We must assume that they were robbed unless someone questions it and does the research.
