* Lorraine's Swan Song

Blognotes: I know I've covered this to death already, but this is different. This will be Lorraire's last crime story in the 24th district for Pioneer News Star. We've had our differences. Some in reporting events, (Why send a news reporter to cover a Friday Night Bingo, fluff piece?) some in how the story was covered. And other's where she missed the story altogether (Heartland Cafe/Code Violations). Yet, we always seem to lead the readers in the right direction. The truth. Lorraine, you are one hard-nosed reporter, you will be missed.
Store Owner Shot, Killed

By LORRAINE SWANSON Staff Writer
A 46-year-old man who operated the Edgewater Mini-Mart at 1215 W. Devon Ave. was shot to death around 11 a.m. Jan. 25.

The victim, who died from gunshot wounds to the neck and arm, was identified as Kaycee Fadiya of Des Plaines.

Police said that store security video showed a man wearing a green hoodie, gray mask and gray jeans walk into the store. Fadiya attempted to exit the store, when the man pulled out what appeared to be a silver chrome revolver from his front pocket. The man shot Fadiya twice as he ran out of the store, where he collapsed on to the sidewalk.

The gunman, described as being five feet, ten inches tall, and weighing 180 pounds, walked past the victim, heading westbound on foot down Devon Avenue.

Two witnesses found the mortally wounded store owner on the sidewalk and called 911. The witnesses placed a floor mat from the store beneath the victim, who was taken to St. Francis Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 11:45 a.m.

A hospital nurse found a large quantity of drugs stashed in the victim's underwear and turned the drugs over to police, according to a 24th District police report.

Office Laura Kubiak, of Chicago Police News Affairs, said that no robbery appeared to have taken place.

"No one is in custody. It's an ongoing homicide investigation," Kubiak said.

She was the only reporter who really seemed to cover the north lakefront wards fairly. I enjoyed her work.

I would guess she wasn't popular with a number of north side alderbeasts. That's a good thing.

She will be missed.

I wrote to the new publisher explaining why I appreciate Lorraine's work and encouraging him to keep her. Let's hope.
