* News Star Police Blotter - The 'Crime is Down' Report

ROBBERY

• Three short men described in their early 20s, and a tall man of the same age, robbed a 35-year-old man at gun point on the *1600 block of North Rogers* around 2 a.m. Jan. 10. One of the short men displayed a handgun while another reached into the victim's pocket and took $23. The victim asked a witness to call police. He said that the men also beat him up, but the police described the victim as being "uncooperative."
BATTERY

• While riding home on the CTA train, a woman in her 40s walked up to a 32-year-old man and threw bleach in his face around 9:20 p.m. Jan. 9. The victim got up and stopped the train at the Morse L station at 1402 West Morse Avenue. The woman got off the train when it stopped. The victim was transferred to St. Francis Hospital in Evanston where he was treated for minor facial burns and released.

Blognotes: The *1600 North Rogers* should read the 7400 block of North Rogers.

That last incident, that of the bleach thrown in the young man's face, is somehow much scarier than the other, more commonplace, crimes you mention.

The robberies at least have a motive a person can comprehend, so it's easier to figure out how to get out of the way.

In the case of the robbery, I detect a hint of "victim-blaming" in describing the victim as "uncooperative".

But there's no figuring a middle-aged female who would throw a caustic chemical in a person's face. You can't see something like this coming. Did this woman have something personal against her victim, or was she just some random lunatic?
