OK, Craig, I'll bite. Since the beginning of time every voter has had a one or more moments of gullibility in the face of a lie or scam. Any one of the litany of synonyms you cite has happened to us all, you and I included. It happens. We're human.
I don't see the need to continue to flog Amy for her admission of being human. Instead, I insist that another of her human characteristics deserves more recognition. That's her courage for challenging operations at a polling place that ended up blocking her initial attempt to vote. I call it courageous that she called on higher authorities, the news media, and even confronted a local elected official who reportedly hadn't a clue about what to do.
Let's get focused people. Blaming Amy for being human, or blaming any victim is not appropriate. Scrutiny needs to be directed at elected officials who everyday try to fool us voters about innumerable issues. A quote attributed to Abraham Lincoln comes to mind: You may deceive all the people part of the time, and part of the people all the time, but not all the people all the time.
Ditto. Let her go. Be happy she had the courage to come forward. Why don't you go after the judges?
If only the usual sycophants had the moral courage to challenge this fool on other alcohol-fueled idiocies.
Craig,
I think your association with Tom "Im not a Republican, but I went ahead and registered gopchicago.com and gopillinois.net anyway" Mannis is really beginning to compromise your credibility.
Lay off Amy, focus on the Judges.
I have to respectfully agree with Mr. Harrington.
It isn't as if Amy realized she had been duped and was afraid to tell anyone. She called out the judges for clearly duping her and openly slapped her palm against her own forehead.
I don't see what anyone is achieving by giving her a bad time.
The judges are the problem here, not Amy. Kindly give her a break and focus the attention on those who pulled such an unbelievable stunt.
i just wish to add to the comments here that if you have never worked as a judge of election, you cannot imagine how much there is to it. you are not really doing your civic duty if you have never done it. it is very hard to get good judges, and getting harder all the time. sadly, one of the side effect of these stupid voting machines is that they have driven a lot of older judges out. they are clumsy, cumbersome, and to those that are not that computer literate, intimidating. plus they take up most of the training time that new judges do get. add to that the galling practice of paying college kids, and college kids only (i know. i tried to get the job. i am as qualified as any of the ppa's that were assigned to my precincts.), 3 times what regular judges are paid, usually to snooze in a chair between set-up and shut-down, and the citizen pool takes a big kick in the guts.
we need good citizen judges. and if you have never had to be there to open a polling place at 5 am, you do not really have any room to wag your fingers at the judges here. i am pretty sure that this staff was all first time judges. there is a hell of a lot to absorb. yes, it was a stupid mistake. but mistakes happen. get out there and do your duty, and you will figure that out.
I'm not seeing the gullible. She did the right thing -- questioned it, then when the answers didn't feel right, she called other people and kept asking around until it was revealed to be bogus.
Anybody know where I can get one of these magic pens? I have to leave a report about something and once my boss reads it I'd like for it to disappear.
twestgard: You add nothing to this discussion.
Kindly move along.
You know, if Craig is drunk alot, I don't think anybody can hold it against him. What if he's not drunk though.
Well, Craig, you do SEVERAL dumb things, and anytime some one calls you out on it, you delete their comments and "hate" blog them.
So dumb, you are the king of it, and probably one of the DUMBEST bloggers in the 60626 zip code.
Here's Dumb, Roundeye's dedication to you last year at the GAAF - we degrade you and you take it as a compliment, that is until some one actually told you what the lyrics were.
What is fascinating to the objective eye is how it all unfolds. What ever happened to focusing on the facts. The plight of the magic voting pen is now an amusing Rogers Park Legend. Dissing Amy is not. However, dissing Craig is just as immature and brain dead.
Where does the convuluted critique go? What does it add to the dialogue? Frankly, we have all had our moments.
I recall a stellar moment when I supported Gordon, but bought the Moore party line hook, line and sinker about Adams. As all of us know, Moore's supporters simply turned around and threw the same unsubstantiated crap at Gordon.
Blogging makes it easy to get immature or mean-spirited without realizing it We can point out when a Tobacco Lobbyist celebrates an anti-tobacco ban in a Rogers Park saloon that he may have once zealously opposed. This, in an effort to appear more progressive.
We can revel and revile in situations where our politicians appear out of the loop. We can point out when we think that others have missed the mark.
I know we live close to the near and dear historical home of the Women's Temperance Union in Evanston. Some of us don't have the temperance, but are definitely responsible. Prohibition is over. Pro-choice people! It is okay to imbibe.
I don't know how Amy became a target, but I have observed some with righteous indignation who have later had to eat crow in public for their embarrassing, but fleeting oversights. Life goes on. Live it!
I am glad to have known about the skaterun today, but we had conflict about a month ago.
RP Garden Group has its meeting this week at Charmers. If you enjoy gardening, bring your plant and seed catalogs. Otherwise, post the next event that you hear about. I understand that the Glen***** Art Fest had or is having a meeting this month, as well.
Amy = gullible
Craig = dick
Stupid fuck of a judge = free pass
Your startin to look the fool here Craig, take my advice and drop it.
Don't forget to send my candies, VD is my fav day & disease.
I served as an election judge in the last presidential primary so I know a little bit about the pressures of the day. There is no excuse for lying - I don't care how busy you are. There is simply no excuse for lying to 1 voter about "invisible ink" much less to 19 or 20! I want to know who that judge was and why he/she hasn't been brought up on charges. Amy’s name is being dragged through the mud but there has been not attempt to publicize (or publicly humiliate) the actual culprit. Why is that?
I'm not sure there are that many people who would have spent the time and energy she did to make certain her vote counted. Calling her names and diminishing her intellect is counterproductive to a blog that otherwise calls on the general public to take a stand against corruption and crime. What the election judge did was criminal, what Fargus did afterward clearly personified his corrupt nature. Yet all she gets is denunciation and public humiliation. I wouldn't be at all surprised if the next time someone finds him/herself in a similar situation they choose to keep mum and let it go simply because they do not want to endure this kind of mean-spirited treatment.
Craig, I've testified to my admiration for you and your work in print and in person to others but this Anti-Amy Diatribe you've engaged in is not one of your prouder moments.
- PEACE -
Amy - Thank you for doing the right thing and challenging this bogus situation.
Craig - While you have a lot of good posts, continuing to abuse Amy for a gullible moment doesn't do her or you any favors. Can you please drop it now?
Does anyone know if charges have been filed against the election judge at fault in this situation?
Fargo Woman, that sounds remarkably like what Westgard was saying, placing voters in the fear of public ridicule makes them less likely to vote, or in this case, less likely to speak up if they encounter a situation where their votes might not be counted.
My question is how come everybody gets hopped up about this one, but not the countless others who have been publically ridiculed, and I'm not talking about public figures, I'm talking about polite commenters, the poor guy accused of stealing signs etc...
I don't think the judges lied either, that's an assumption, some people always assume the worst and some always assume the best, but the only way to know is to find out what happened. Was it a rumor, was it a guess as to why the pens didn't make visible marks that took off in people's imaginations, what? Nobody investigating the situation has suggested that the judges lied that I've heard. That would be serious, but the conclusion was that there was no malicious intent.
Paradise: "I don't think the judges lied either"
Amy really is irrelevant in this issue, slamming the girl, it rots of misogynistic. Do hate the girls lately Craig? Your only on the A's, Amy, Anne...
What do you call it when a judge tells you to your face, such an outrageous story. I would call it what it is: an out and out lie, no lets call it what it really is: fraud.
The judge fabricated a story aka lied, why? Cause s/he was too lazy to run/count "spoils" at the end of the night.
Was the ballot not runned through the box at the end, did the machine read anything? The whole situation sounds shaky.
Where were the 49th Ward Poll watchers? I was one in the 48th ward and I was there from 5:45am until the end. It would not have occurred on my watch. And beleive me there were many crazy situations that day.
I would have called the S/Attorney office and the commission for judges. This precient needs to be accountable for the votes, call all the voters and revote or throw out all the votes.
