* One Big Fight on Howard (Updated)

7:11 PM: Rogers Park after school youth programs at work. Lot's of girls and guys fighting in the 1700 block West Howard. When the police arrived, the fight broke up and the fighters scrambled in all directions. I guess we can code this one as a "Co-Ed Gang Fight dispersal." The police have got a couple of girls in custody. These cat-fighters ran to the Evanston side of Howard Street to try to get away, but didn't have any luck.

Update - 7:31 PM: This above crime case is being turned over to the Evanston Police.

Around the same time (7 PMish) a 13 year old girl caused criminal damage to property (alleged broken window) at JJ Peppers at Pratt and Ridge. The 13 year old female fled north on Ridge. Nothing further.

It sure seems that way.

What's the principal draw for these kids on Howard St?

Is Tasty Sub still open? I thought that cesspool was going to be shut down.

The blight on west Howard is tainting formerly pristine neighborhoods in West Ridge. It is no longer safe on Ridge at night, in the 7200-7600 blocks, or on any of the surrounding streets, and you can't casually walk to Howard to pick up an item at a convenience store.

Shame. It's a cute neighborhood with great architecture and lots of potential.

Thanks! I agree. It IS cute, it DOES have a lot of potential, and the citizens in this area are MAD AS HELL about the gangs.

The Tasty Sub seems to be going nowhere fast. I've heard that the owner never filed the zoning ordinance request. Without the zoning figured out, nothing else will move forward. My guess is that he or his investors are scared off by the crappy real estate market. I wish he would be more scared of the ire of the local residents.

Hey, Joe Moore -- how 'bout some eminent domain action on Howard?

Hugh, I agree. There is such tremendous improvement that some newer locals have no clue, whatsoever. I travel regularly down Howard. Why posit such unrighteous gloom and doom? Some of us enjoy living here and know that density brings a few mopes of all backgrounds.

The Evanston condo and Howard Terminal development will prove to be a godsend. However, moaning and groaning is due to people wanting neighborhoods to improve too fast. They think that a new alderman is the only cure. Real estate developers donate to alderman; neighborhoods often, but not always, improve with development

Marginal cat fights play out in north suburban high schools, among other places. In a dense area, with witnesses, things get called in to CPD. If a young female vandal gets away, then a good bottle of the preferred marker removal slathered on within days or hours may do the job. Filing an insurance claim for every incident will eventually void the policy. That's life in the city.

One other point, Duncan Donuts re-opened weeks ago. It was closed based upon Terminal construction, not due to the lack of business. Duncan was and is booming. The anti-RP video was deceptive based upon ignorance on that point.

Other concerns, Hollywood video is a victim of the internet. We stopped renting from Hollywood a while ago. TiVo helped. In addition, I am not a Buffalo wing freak, but am convinced that Buffalo Joe's is worth the trip for wings. It is ten times better than that franchise in Niles, taste-wise. I believe that Rogers Park, not Evanston, has the original B-Joes, but may be mistaken.

La Cocina di Donatela is worth the trip but arguably pricy to some. The panini is worthy. The bike Federation and La Cocina should push for bike racks to encourage more traffic to the restaurant.

If you don't like submarine sandwiches, then just don't go. Apparently, if Tasty sub is still open, then someone thinks it is good. As it is said, you may like Green Eggs and Ham, won't you try them Sam, I am?

Consider the location and don't condemn people just because they prefer a local submarine joint. Many of us prefer to pay less than Amphora or Tru Restaurant prices.

Ultimately, some of us have forgotten that segregation was supposed to end years ago. I mean, stop by Correct Cuts. See if you can encourage them to learn to cut white folks hair, correctly! However, I would stick with the older barber and learn to appreciate soul music.

From Alderman Rainey: For those inquiring about a fight at 739 Howard - big fight around 7 pm yesterday. Girls and boys. First, a girl beats up another girl and then continuing and connected to the girl on girl attack, the girl, walking with her father was attacked by a group of boys. Now, here is the good part. The victim identifies the girl attacker. The father wants to press charges, the victim is bleeding at several places on her face. Father goes to the police station, the perp is in custody and the father decides to not press charges and refused medical treatment for the kid.

Go figure, I am looking forward to round 3.
