Hello from Motegi, Japan. We're about 125 kilometers north of Tokyo. On Thursday Pat and I wandered around the city before heading to the Twin Ring Motor-sports complex. Friday we got the bike all together and he went out for practice session. As we were in the woods I spotted this little creature watching us. I'm guessing it was a Japanese possum? It allowed me to get about 10 feet away to snap this photo, then he took off.

That's a Japanese badger. Reasonably common in parts of the country.
You're half-right. It's a badger-dog, also known as a tanuki.
