Crime is down in the 49th ward.

Yeah, right.

In human terms there were 1300 more crimes committed in last 10 months than people who voted for Joe Moore in 2007.

Look it up. 5338 to 4000.

Someone robbed at 10:15 pm at Touhy and Sheridan?

Shocking for East Rogers Park! Just ask any Chicago policeman.

What, are the Police honestly going to arrest a gun carring Thug who is looking for a chance to kill someone while abading the Police? Uncle Al, calling uncle Al, where is uncle Al, has anyone seen uncle Al today? oh yea, that's right, he's in New York, marching for the gun carring Thugs over there. What a joke...

Sandy: Pretty ridiculous of you to connect this robbery to Al Sharpton's grandstanding in front of TV camera.

Not to downgrade anyone, but I'm wondering if the victim was paying much attention to their surroundings before the perps apprached.

I notice too many people in this neighborhood, no matter what time of day it is, strolling or standing around, not noticing what is going around them. I see a lot of women walking around looking down, when they should be looking straight ahead and giving the impression they are alert. I see people so engaged in their cell phone conversations that they damn near run into or over people on the sidewalk. Others have iPods or CD players blaring in their ears.

No neighborhood in a large city is free of crime. People have to learn how to be more aware whenever they are out on the street.

I'm not victim-blaming here, but I concur with Tomboy that being alert is the best defense you have on the streets.

You shouldn't HAVE to look over your shoulders everywhere you go, but the fact is that this entire country has been flooded with violent crime for the past 40 years, and you have to be vigilant everywhere- whether it is a city street or a suburban shopping mall. People get mugged and car-jacked quite often on those three-zip-code mega parking lots at malls, so don't think we are being singled out.

Having said that, there are a few spots in this neighborhood where being alert just isn't enough, because these are "hot spots" with just too many goons hanging around. God Forbid you should have to come home at 3 am, exhausted and half-asleep with your feet aching from some wretched service or hospital job, and get off at the Morse el because that's the stop closest to home. People have to work jobs that work them till late and leave them tired are very, very vulnerable.

And then, of course, there is the chance you could catch a bullet aimed at someone else- an accident, but one that tends to happen a lot more often in areas with the kinds of problems we have here. Being alert won't help you here, either.

Yo, Izzy, don't be such a putz.

Im of the mind that criticizing Craig will (eventually) make him a more thoughtful blogger.

Kudos to Craig for allowing me to comment---even if we don't always agree on things.
