My son Anderson took the Metra home this afternoon. He's recently moved into an apartment at Glenwood and Estes. He walked from the Metra stop to Estes and then walked East on Estes toward home. About Paulina he noticed that a couple of guys were following him on their bikes, but didn't think anything of it. Then, when he reached the group home between Greenview and Glenwood, the guys jumped him. One held him down while the other took his wallet. We all know 'Crime is Down', but let's be careful out there, folks. Watch your back. And Anderson, stay strong. We hope they catch these guys.
One was about 5-feet-8 with a slight build -- about Anderson's size. He was wearing two diamond stud earrings and a dark green shirt.
The other was about 6-feet-2 with a large frame and was wearing a white T-shirt. He was riding a blue bicycle that was much too small for him.
Both were African-American. The smaller guy wrestled with Anderson while the big guy came up behind Anderson, put his arm around him and took everything out of Anderson's pocket.
Anderson said he was yelling as loud as he could the whole time, but apparently no one heard him.
Anderson was at the house about 2 minutes later, called the police and they arrived within 5 minutes.
About 90 minutes later, a dad and two kids showed up at the house with the wallet saying they found it in the alley near Glenwood. (Note: The cash was gone, but everything else was there. You might recall a few years ago there was somebody breaking into people's houses, stealing wallets and purses, and taking the cash but leaving everything else behind.)
He's OK, but pretty unhappy and a little rattled by the experience. It's more than a little disconcerting that it happened in the light of day on a stretch of street that is usually pretty busy with pedestrians coming home from work.

Chris, I'm so sorry this happened to your son. I hope he'll be ok. Thanks for the heads up about the bike riding muggers. I hope they are caught. Can they check for fingerprints on the wallet?
Related: Chokehold on Touhy.
This is Rogers Park not CSI.
Chris thanks for the detailed description.
Seems that a gang is trying to establish itself in the area again.
Apparently products are dropped off by the Glenmore ~ 5am daily.
Small group of 5-6 black males meet dealer in temp tag car for cash/ product exchange.
Everyday.
Later same group harrases and intimadates onlookers.
This group can be seen near Circle Garden and entrace to building near Sheridan and Morse.
Probably a good idea to cary mace, small screw driver (good for close combat).
This is a rapidly escalating problem.
Progun,
if you can see and deduce all of this, why can't the cops?
We need to make more and more noise about this!! I am so sick of these thugs and idiots running around here! I see the group near Circle Garden and have complained to the alderman's office many times!! We can't let these thugs win.
Craig mentioned the "group home" in his "Chokehold on Touhy" link. Anyone have a ball-park figure of home many of these group homes there are in RP and their correlation with crime? The one near Greenleaf and Sheridan always seems a little chaotic outside.
I'm pretty sure I saw these guys the other day. They caught my eye because the one was riding a very small, darker blue (or maybe royal blue), girl's bike.
It's a bike that a 6 or 7 year old girl would ride. The frame sort of curves down and then back up like an older style bike. Like the drain pipe on your sink.
You can't miss it if you see it.
Yeah what's up with the big dudes on the little kiddie bikes...I see that ALL the time!
Pictures are worth a thousand words.
Reporting the crime is also important.
Testimoy in a court of law also helps.
However defending yourself with the help of a few neighbors is more fun than going to court.
Police can only be so many places at once.
The bikes are stolen. Hence the big dude on a little bike. Wake up.
Yeah that sounds like them. It might be rush to judgement, but the cops told me yesterday that if anyone sees them to call in and report it since they are wanted on an oustanding police report.
Group Homes that I am aware of - Lutheran Services near Clark and Touhy, Lawrence Hall - Touhy and Greenview, Maryville, Estes just East of Greenview next door to PACTT SCHOOL! - Chase - just west of Paulina, not sure of agency that oversees.....Jarvis just west of Ashland - Lawrence Hall!
I know there are others.
The kids are not the problem - it is the way they are managed through the system. They are disenfranchised who are expected to live within normal boundaries of society but no roll models.
There is a long long history of how this neighborhood became the area for an influx Nursing Homes as well as Group Homes and now ReHab Apartments.
I am not opposed to any of these places but the reality is there are too many concentrated in one area. Now....imagine what this impact has on the schools within this attendance area.
The burden is the rotation of these young people as they begin to settle down...they get moved....they move to another house.....they start to settle down and they are moved
It is a mess!
That bike description is right on btw.
Police can only be so many places at once.
This might be a factor in a random shooting or something, but you state it happens at 5 am DAILY. And according to you there is a predictable and set routine.
Even if cops can only be in so many places at one time, this seems like one of the easier places to be.
RP4Life...my point was that a 6'2 thug stealing a bike made for a 7 year-old and then riding it whilst thugging around da hood isn't exactly the best way to cultivate a thug persona. Unless there is some street gang code about how cool it is to ride kiddie bikes.
I want to comment on the group home on Greenleaf @ Sheridan, those little thugs sit in the back yard and smoke pot all day. Who is in charge of the kids? Where the hell is the group leader? Doesn't someone smell the sh**? I walk past there everyday, walking from the train, and I never see an adult supervising. what is really going on? Those kids are rude?
Unless there is some street gang code about how cool it is to ride kiddie bikes.
There's a "street gang code" that it's cool to show your asscrack and wear t-shirts three sizes too big. Why wouldn't kiddie bikes be cool?
I saw the bike again this evening. It was about 6:00pm in the alley just east of Sheridan between Estes and Greenleaf. I don't know if it was the same kid this time, but it was definitely the same bike. He was riding around near the backyard of the group home on Greenleaf, where a bunch of other kids were hanging out.
The bike is like I described in my earlier post. It also has chrome fenders.
I agree about the group home on Greenleaf... Those kids are thugs. I used to see kids from there slinging drugs at the laundromat on Greenleaf and Glenwood.
Sorry... Obviously, I meant the alley just WEST of Sheridan..
I do believe the group home that MadeInRogersPark said is "Maryville, Estes just East of Greenview next door to PACTT SCHOOL!" Is actually no longer owned by Maryville.
It is now a CILA for young adults that are part of the PACTT adult day program.

If you are concernedabout the home onj Greenleaf and the alley just west of Sheridan Road - Call 769-3500 and report what you see They will take care of it.
I SWEAR THEY ARE SOOOOOOO HELPFUL!
bU CALL WHEN THE ACTIVITY IS IN PROGRESS
You can also stop by and ring he doorbell and see who is in charge
The staff is fairly transient and the pay sucks
Heather you are correct about the hosue on Estes and I apologize
Thanks for the update!
But the real problem is too many group homes in a neighborhood already in overflow of others who need an abundance of service
Rogers Park has been a dumping ground since before I went to high school and now I am retired par-time so believe me I know what I am talking about
But again Heather is correct about the living community for the graduates from PACTT
I have gone to the house on Greenleaf.
Check out exactly what is going on their. And call the main campus
Also if you are allking by and see the thugs smoking pot in the yard just chill and call 911!
One has to be pretty naive to rent an apartment near Glenwood and Estes.
It's not a question of "if
you'll get mugged living in this area--but "when."
To Man on the street-
Maybe because the Police are unaware of this. The gang and tac teams do not start until later in the day. Maybe if someone would report this to the Police instead of the alderman who has no control over it, something would be done about it. Just sayin.
You don't need to be in an alley to get mugged in RP. Been playing around with CLEARMAP http://gis.chicagopolice.org/CLEARMap/startPage.htm Any better online sources out there for chicago crime stats??
That's seriously disturbing news as I also live at Glenwood & Estes... I've never really felt unsafe but, that being said... Couldn't hurt to pick up some mace or other form of self-defense.
