20+ years! Happy belated employment anniversary to our neighbor, David!
Name: Fagus, David
Title: Chief Operating Officer
Department: Cermak Health Services Of Cook County
Salary: $119,456
Start Date: 5/10/88
(Source: The Better Government Association's most excellent public payroll database!)
It's been a good run. The generous support of the County Health Service payroll has subsidized 5 elections of Joe Moore. But eventually the Peter Principle catches up.
And once you're promoted to a certain level in The Machine, the understanding is that you may be asked to fall on your sword on demand. You get the big bucks for covering for the big buys. That's the deal. Cook County's entrenched career pols need a fall guy to stave off a federal take-over of the County prison system, and they've lined up our very own Democratic ward Committeeman. But don't worry about David and his family, expect a soft landing; watch for David to resurface as a consultant. It's The Chicago Way.
Read the Bench's cogent analysis, and don't miss the bitter-sweet "buh-bye David" kiss-off letter ("Cook County Jail Realities") by Cook County's bloggiest Sheriff on the Huffington Post, no less. And if you have the stomach for it, try reading the US Attorney's report on conditions in County jail.

A neighbor mentioned this blog to me, but I had no idea how negative it is. Why don't you stop complaining about things and start taking action to make things better? You all sound like a bunch of bitter people with nothing better to do.
Social Justice, have you tried working with the aldermans office? Do they return your telephone calls about crime? Do they respond to your emails about the drug dealers that continue to stalk our streets? Once they learn you want positive change in the 49th ward and you are tired of the slum lords, gang bangers, drug dealers and low life trash in our neighborhood, they ignore you, and then you'll have the same cynical attitudes the rest of us do. This alderman is satisfied with the status quo in the ward. The rest of us are tired of it and him.
i don't understand
what's so negative about congratulating a neighbor on 2 decades of continuous employment with the same employer? that's very rare these daze
let's all pull for our neighbor as he weathers this rough patch at work and transitions to the semi-private sector late in his career, it's gotta be tough
Social Justice, this is a blog - one of MANY tools we can use to spotlight the numerous negative issues plaguing our community. Here we can inform and support each other as we struggle to bring about the changes needed in Rogers Park. This blog also serves as a bulletin board alerting us to events and meetings surrounding the issues set to take place throughout the neighborhood. It often provides information; sometimes even in the form of video coverage, about what took place at those same meetings and events. This is coverage the Alderman and even the mainstream media either refuse or don't have the time to provide. Negative? Perhaps, but negativity is the by-product of trying to bring about positive change in a neighborhood governed by stagnation and ennui. The Broken Heart is only meant to provide an interactive meeting place for mutual support and discussion of topics relevant to our neighborhood as well as to act as a call to action. It is up to us, the citizenry of Rogers Park, to take the action necessary to make things better.
- PEACE -
Are you kidding - we all want change!! We want this to be a safe neighborhood where property values increase and we can walk the streets with no threats of violence. My guess is that the majority of people that post here are trying to do something about it.
