Sullivan High School Students Brawl on Monday

2:52 PM: School out, and you know what that means. It's time to fight. Group fight has broken out at 6705 North Bosworth. Police are calling for backup.

2:58 PM: Police are now heading over to Pratt and Ashland to break up another group fight with the Sullivan Fight School students.

2:59 PM: It's out of control. We have mayhem in the streets. Now the Sullivan students are fighting at Pratt and Bosworth.

3:15 PM: New media on the scene?

I went down to Lunt and Ashland after hearing about another brawl underway. About 100 kids were fleeing north and one kid was being hauled away. We had another photographer covering the mess. As I was taking this photo another brawl broke out at Greenleaf and Ashland. She immediately ran towards the group fight. Anyone know who this photographer is? Does she work for Ginderske's rumored publication?

3:39 PM: CTA bus driver calling 911. Gang members fighting in the street at Morse and Ashland.

3:42 PM: Police think another gang brawl is going to erupt at Farwell and Ashland.

We hear the sirens, loud and clear. I don't understand why the cops aren't posted at the predictable intersections each day, instead of waiting for the fights to break out.

Wow! This is horrible. Reading your blog I'd think these kids were fighting everyday.

It sounds like they are fighting everyday! I agree - I wonder why the police don't people at the troubled spots to stop it from happening.

Not again with fighting. I wonder when do they ever stop fighting. I'm sure there will be yet another fight tomorrow.

I witnessed a beat down today at around 2:30pm on the corner of North Shore and Greenview, in front of the Kilmer school. Five or six elementary school kids were punching/kicking one kid who was already on the ground. I was passing by on my school bus. I alerted the bus driver/bus aide to call the police, but they were more concerned with getting us home.

All the more reason to move north of RP, and Evanston.

While this has been going on since at least the beginning of the school year I still see no one speaking up at the Local School Council Meeting! At neighboring high schools there is a police duty prior to dismissal. Why cant the school have rolling dismissal times. with 6 minute intervals?
Disperse students through different doors.....or hold in the thugs who are causing all this chaos! Believe me the Principal on down knows who the trouble makers are. Kids talk. Find someone with some authority to stop this nonsense! I am sick and tired of the noise and the sirens and lack of leadership at the school. Someone please - stand up and be heard!
PS I can't do it personally as I am employed by the CBOE

The silence from Arne Duncan and Jody Weis and Joe Moore is deafening.

iheartrp- Ahh, maybe because they don't have enough Police for that. Just a thought. Remember, your mayor, city council and superintendent of Police have allowed this Department to sink to dangerously low levels of staffing. You may not know this but they are playing the old shell game with your Officers. They move gang and tac teams to other parts of the city at the drop of a hat because they don't have enough people. God forbid we are attacked again or there is some kind of civil unrest. There is no way the Chicago Police Department would be able to handle it because of the low level staffing. There are people that post here that think this mayor is a great guy and concerned about their welfare. If they knew the truth about how he put's OUR safety on the backburner they wouldn't be so supportive.

Joe Moore would rather hold feel-good neighborhood functions talking about how he carried Obamas jock-strap around the country than talk about the lawless youth roaming his streets on a daily basis.

Sullivan High School is in Pat O'Connor's Ward

I heart the R.P. said...

Your right, again about Joe Moore's dis-involvement in his ward. I was shocked (I should know better) that he did not attend last night's Beat meeting. Who was there? Mostly Morse Ave. and Glenwood biz owners with a handful of residents like me.
I asked the simple question "how many officers are stationed at the end of the day at Sullivan" and didn't get a direct answer. The best I can tell is two lady cops, that's it.
The biggest disappointments for me were
1.) no aldermanic presence. (I'm sure we'll see him at next weeks higher profile Crime meeting, standing along side a Senator.)
2.) no Sullivan High School presence. Although attendees prodded the police panel to request that the principal be asked to attend the C.A.P.S. meeting, the panel repeatedly put it back on the citizens to contact the school themselves to demand the school attend the Beat meetings.
3.) some jackass higher up cop,I can best describe as Drew Peterson's twin, continually interrupting the other officers, refusing to take any criticism, and pointing fingers at union and National bureaucracy as the problem.
B.D.-Dayle is a benevolent dictator. I for one would like to see him replaced.

You wouldn't be talking about Officer Steven Cohen or Officer Jacob, would you? With that description it couldn't be Sergeant B.

Big Daddy,
How do these units prep. for or familiarize themselves with another district or neighborhood on short notice?

How are these teams able to strategize for a district so effectively if they're being displaced so often?

It isn't an election year for him, that's why. In fact, Joe hasn't mentioned anything about crime all year. I think I'm going to ask him Monday night if he knows the names of the four people murdered in his ward this year. I'm going to ask him how many shots fired were there. I'm going to ask him how many gang and drug dispersals we've had in the 49th ward. I plan on asking Joe Moore a lot of questions.

Fools, you get , depending which cars are not down on jobs, the school officers, the wagon, all the tact and gang cars + 3 or 4 beat cars. The plan is greet the rats by the school and stay with them till they disperse. They fight regardless of who is there and the juveniles know arresting them is a waste of time.

Big Daddy said...

Newgardner-They don't prep when they are sent to another district. The districts they are sent to are all high crime areas so prepping is not needed. They just go there and make arrests.

If your mean strategizing for the 024th district, they study the 24 hour sheet which lists all crimes or calls for service that occurred the previous 24 hours and they read case reports. But that's not the point. There are not enough Police Officers citywide to deal with the increased work load being placed upon them. And with the downturn in the economy I suspect it will get worse. And as Bill posted, there are probably two school officers, any beat car that's avilable and a few tac and gang cars. That's it. Remember, the Police are not sitting around waiting for you to call. They have plenty of other things to do and plenty of other people in the district that need help.

I think that I Heart The R.P. meant Hank Jakob.
He has answer for everything & I do mean everything!
A charter member of the cover your ass bureaucracy!
When only Steve is at a meeting, we get far more info, without any of the bureaucratic BS!

But Craig, you have to understand that a few years ago, Sullivan deliberately moved the LSC monthly meeting to the first Tuesday of the month, which was already the date of the 2432 Beat meeting.

Several of us used to go to both, but it was easily seen that the LSC didn't want any community involvement at Sullivan & that the neighbors should just shut up & accept the behavior the the angels that attend the school.

have you read an Evanston crime blotter lately? you may want to reconsider, in light of the daily car break-ins and muggings and petty thefts.

All these fights and the only pics you can get is of a 'photographer'? You're on the scene, Craig. Why not actually take pictures of the alleged 'fights'?

So, you don't know who she is then, huh?

Tell it to the citizens and police. These reports come from the scanner.

'So, you don't know who she is then, huh?'

Umm...no. Doesn't seem to be the MAIN priority when covering a mass gang fight. The only reason I suggest to take pics (of the fights, not the other photographers)is that it might be effective for anti-gang taskforces in the area to start putting some names and faces on these bangers. If nothing else, the pics can be used as evidence to get these little bastards turned around and on the right path (when possible). Also, where's the high school's accountability on these fights? You can go on and on about 'parents responsiblility, yada yada yada' but there needs to be more components. Does anyone know the disciplinary procedures of Sullivan for its students fighting (on or off campus?, before, during, or after school?)
