Dear Mr. Obama:

We, the residents of Rogers Park, and other residents of every neighborhood across our great nation, thought that when YOU were elected, the first BLACK PRESIDENT, that those who consider themselves your people, would settle down and wait for your directives. By virtue of so many recent incidents, especially here in Rogers Park, your people DO NOT understand you, nor do they understand your policy proposals.

The residents of Rogers Park are exhausted, way too tired to deal any longer with gangs, gang actions, your friend Joe Moore's denial regarding crime, Mayor Daley's denial regarding crime, in our neighborhood.

What would you propose we do, sir? Have you already become so far removed from Chicago as to no longer give a rat's bum about us?

I don't want to be stabbed on Touhy, do you, sir? Do you even know any longer where Touhy is? Or are you so concerned with hiring all the Clinton cronies that you no longer care about the "peons" who voted for you?

Grammar Gal, the president of the U.S. has much larger matters on his plate to deal with than the crime situation in one Chicago neighborhood. It's idiotic to ask the newly elected president of a deeply troubled nation of 300 million to focus on shootings on Touhy Ave, or what is going on elsewise in one Chicago ward.

Remember, he now represents the NATION, most of whose citizens are people who live other places, and we have enough really pressing problems on the national level for him and his team to deal with. I sincerely hope he isn't putting Rogers Park, or even Chicago, ahead of our collapsing economy, our growing problem with oil and water resources, our bleak future economic outlook, our diplomatic relationships, our trade relationships, and our national defense.

National affairs should be Obama's ONLY concern, and local affairs should be our aldermoron's ONLY concern.

We hire our ALDERMAN to deal with our local problems, and I only wish he would keep his own mind on our local situation and keep his oar out of anything that doesn't pertain to this ward, and this city.

I'm no major fan of Rudolph Giuliani, but sometimes I think his "no tolerance" approach is what's needed: strict enforcement of all existing laws to build up a climate of law and order...everyone is treated equally under the law (arrested, fined, whatever) for doing everything from eating French fries on a train to dealing drugs on Howard. Maybe not realistic. But I get tired of hearing about hesitance to enforce this or that law because "it's complex." Either someone is observed violating the law or they are not.

I am a Giulani fan and I think it's a great idea. No reason a few thugs and idiots should influence life for the rest of us. I'm sure Grammar Gal didn't really think Obama cares about Rogers Park - I'm not sure he even knows where it is - he spent most of his time as a Senator running for President.

Grammar Gal,

I'm African-American. Just what directive is President-Elect Obama supposed to be giving me? Not all of the gang bangers and drug dealers are people of color.

I agree with North Coast. The man can't just give preference to Chicago or one neighborhood simply because he lives here (and he's not originally from the Midwest, on top of that).

Gerammer Gal, get a clue. What for Obama's directives? What the fuck are black people, the Borgs? Gangs were around before Obama and they will be around after. By your logic the Klan should have broken up and wandered off in different directions after the election of Bush... or Clinton.. or Bush.. or Reagan...

One minute you're trying to remind Obama that he's president of ALL Americans, not just black, the next minute you're wondering he's going to do about HIS people. Make up your mind. Which should be easy given its relatively small size.

Scott, in principle, I agree with you.

However, we have so many ludicrous laws on the books affecting so many areas of life, along with sentencing laws that are unbelievably unfair and irrational, that there is completely no way they could be enforced fairly, strictly, and across the board. We can't risk a situation where perfectly decent, harmeless citizens risk a jail term for, say, eating a candy bar on the train, while murderers walk free after 5 years, or even 2.

Right now, cities and towns across the country are experiencing an upsurge in crime. I expect things will only worsen as the economic slump deepens, which it is on track to do- unemployment is projected to hit 9% by the end of 2009! The suburbs are starting to unravel, as more people fall out of the middle class and some among them resort to desperado measures either in irrational revenge against the cruel world that kicked them out of their $700,000 houses, or in attempts to make up personal shortfalls. So, naturally, crime among "problem" populations, such as the ex-cons and gangbangers populating certain pockets of our nabe, is escalating.

The only way we can meet with the situation is to make sure we have laws that are reasonable and enforceable. Right now, we don't. Instead of making more laws, our lawmakers ought to sit down and consider what laws should be removed from the books, and revamp sentencing laws, so that dangerous criminals will be removed from the streets and STAY off. Right now, our justice system is a lottery- you can commit a really vile, violent crime and you stand almost as much a chance of a laughably light sentence, or of walking free altogether, as you do of getting the punishment you have coming.

I don't expect that people eating on trains should get jail terms, just the fines already prescribed but never imposed.

It just seems that with so many laws not adequately enforced, there's a culture of "the rules are for someone else." Drop food on the bus floor, pee on the sidewalk, gab on a cellphone while driving, sell drugs on the corner...it all goes without consequences. In general, we need each law either to be consistently enforced or taken off the books.

I'm not for draconian penalties, just better enforcement of the existing laws, with the established penalties.

Thank God I am moving out of here! Tired of it, had enough, check please, gone!

Really does suck, because Rogers Park could be a great place to live! I really want to be somewhere that you can go for a walk with your wife and kid at night... Rogers Park, no way!
