10:18 AM: For most people it's a little early to be getting liquored up. But not for one Sullivan High School student. Police are taking in one for possession of alcohol.
This was a commonplace occurance at my own high school many decades ago, even though our student body was made up of "nice" white kids. I remember a drunken party in the a girl's restroom, and a half-dozen extremely wasted girls being walked down the steps and out of the school by the police.
Are the school administrators going to EXPEL this kid, or are they just going to let him back into class after a day or two, so he can keep on disrupting classes, fighting with other kids, and being a bad influence?
The diff between then and now was the tolerance for misbehavior. You got caught with liquor at my school, you were permanently expelled, period. Your parents were called to school to get you, and believe me, you did NOT look forward to the parent-child conferance when they got you home. Parents ALWAYS sided with school authorities back in those days, and they didn't want to hear about how the principal was so unfair to you.
You got expelled for liquor or drug possession on school property, for leaving the property during school hours, for your 5th cut class, or your 5th time being booted out of class for talking or passing notes. You got kicked out for disrupting a class in session when you were in the hallway, for talking back to teachers, for skipping too many days.
These days, the parents fight the school authorities in their efforts to discipline kids, and they can't kick the troublemakers out, which is about 75% of the student body at places like Sullivan, and a substantial number absolutely everywhere. So your kid has to go to school surrounded by undisciplined brats who disrupt classes, and expend energies that should be used for learning and achieving, to learning how to evade the predators in the hallway and make it to and from school in possession of his wallet, his shoes, and his life.
Buzzed learning is for college and beyond. Drinking in high school leads to lengthy political careers. Just like big and little BUSH. Tipsy O'Neil and all the Kenedy Clan. Very hard to stutter a slur on a Daily basis and be successful in the private sector.
I'm not surprised. The division room I was in when I was a junior in high school was populated with some of the more well-known teen drug dealers. They carried the stuff on them daily. And this was at a magnet high school.
North Shore, you are 100% correct! Zero tolerance and heavy discipline was common when I was in grade and high school. Those things have disappeared in today's world.
Unfortunely, I do not know about this incident. I'm not too surprised, though. This wouldn't be the first time someone brought liquior into a school I've been at. At my last school, a few kids used to bring in both alcohol and DRUGS.
Is Grammmmmer girl on rocks? Seriously, she must think this is Craigslist R and R. Sweetheart, the trolls/racists and idiots are there not here.
I can't even believe this is a topic here. No matter if you are in the suburbs, country or city, your first taste of liqour is out of your parents cabinet or in a H.S bleacher/party/bathroom etc.
are you saying that doubting kid's parenting is racist? I think that is unbelievable! It doesn't matter what race you are... if you have parents that do not pay attention, you do stupid s!@#!
I think most of the problem in RP, is due to bad parenting!
I agree - the parents seem to let the kids run free up here. It's ridiculous that any kids in a school have to put up with this sh.. on a daily basis. My parents would have taken the side of the school - not fought them on it. It's that sense of entitlement and "everyone is against us"
The parents let the kids run wild EVERYWHERE. Don't be on a suburban highway on Fri or Sat night.
Parents are individually dismayed by the prevailing culture of laxness and indulgence, but no one wants to be the parent who puts her foot down and yells: ENOUGH!! You, the parent, might feel like you're the only parent in town who doesn't buy his kid a car, or let him drink in the basement with his buds, or go on mixed-sex overnight trips, or drop $3000 on the senior prom.
Did you know that car accidents are the biggest killer of teens, and more than half are alcohol-related? Yet suburban parents continue to supply their kids with liquor even though at least two well-off suburbanites have been prosecuted because they supplied liquor to kids who subsequently A)wrapped their car around a tree a block from the host's house, and were killed, and B) beat the hell out of other girls on an opposing team.
Parents who feel the need for support in getting tough with their kids should form a support group with other like-minded parents, and when you feel worn down because "all the other kids do it/get it/ have it" or other people say you are too rough on your kid, you can get some on-call support for taking the car away, the allowance away, or sending the kid to boot camp, or otherwise disciplining him/her.
And when another parent supplies your kid with booze or drugs or a place to crash to get drunk or have sex or whatever, don't be a wus about it. RAISE HELL AND PROSECUTE!! I have a relative whose biggest problem keeping her boy in hand was having a wealthy little friend whose parents let the kids drink and drug at their house! She was furious, but she didn't want to be a "troublemaker." BE A TROUBLEMAKER-RAISE HELL WITH THESE PEOPLE.

Very NICE new banner, Craig!
A HIGH School student? Carrying liquor into school? On a Monday morning?
Perhaps Avondale will know more later, but...WHERE ARE THIS KID'S PARENTS? Hopefully, they have been "hauled in" too?
WWBD: What Would Barack Do?
Good morning :D Was the kid in school or on the street?
Ohhhh, I see what you did there. Bolding the word high. OMG, that's sooooooo clever. Good work, Craig!

Well, there's a difference between drinking and simply possessing.

Exactly! I can't tell you where they are, but I can tell you what they are doing.... NOT BEING GOOD PARENTS!

Tsk, tsk, tsk.

Gee, looks like I've got to contact Google. Someone hijacked my name.
It happened all the time at Regina.

Unbelievable!!!
You can spot this bike parked at the eastern end of Morse Avenue. The banner, as in most of the BH banners, was designed by Tom Mannis.

Oooh. Let's spank all the bad parents.
