Ambush Shooting on Morse Avenue

Eyewitness accounts from last night are chilling. A shooter comes up the alley, just east of Lakewood, from Farwell to Morse. He fires two shots - then runs back south through the same alley, to Farwell, where he's picked up by a person in a white sedan. They're gone in a flash.

The aftermath? A person is hit in the head - and is in critical condition at St. Francis Hospital in Evanston.

The night before, the same witness said 7 shots were fired at the same location. And the night before, more shots fired. That's three nights in a row shots were fired around the Morse/Lakewood and Wayne vicinity. If that's not a public health crisis, what is?

No mainstream media hanging around to report on this public health crisis. No Joe Moore to talk to the media, giving his sage advice. All that remains this morning is a fast food wrapper that was used to absorb blood from the victim.

Still waiting on the official word from the commander.

We thought that because the ambulance stayed on site for 15-20 minutes that the guy was dead. He was shot in the neck and there was alot of blood. Steve heard the shots and went outside to see.

I was somewhat relieved to find out this morning from the building manager that he did not live in the apt. on the corner.

My witness said the guy tried to go into the building on the corner of Lakewood and Morse after being shot. Blood leading to the back door entrance from the alleyway would leave me to believe he knew someone in that building - and was trying to go there before the ambulance arrived.

Someone is using that building as a drug house. I've told anyone who will listen. Apparently they haven't. Or they did and are unwilling to do anything about it.

The Morse El area is your one stop drug shop. Joe's probably even getting a kickback.

I use to see a group of idiots standing in front of the old Ryder building dealing.

Great area!

I just hope they catch the guy that did it. I saw the police interviewing people today.

As far as the building having drug activity, if I saw any- I would report it. I never see anything amiss on the Lakewood side. If I do, I call 911.

I live on Lakewood and thought I heard shots - my friends and I were - "what the hell?" but I'm honestly not used to hearing guns so I'm not sure. So, what building on Lakewood and Morse - the east side or west side? I see a lot of creeps in both buildings but I'm guessing the west side - that building always looks like trouble. Lots of people hanging around, trash all over, etc.

At least tell us that he person shot was the intended victim - another gangbanging idiot. That would be some relief.

But seriously, how hard can it be to keep the area around the el stop clear? I mean, EVERYONE knows that it goes on there. There are thugs and ne'er-do-wells out there all day and night. I dunno, maybe an occasional foot patrol (and if there is already one there, excuse me, but I never see it)? A police car stationed there occasionally (and not at predictable hours)? Maybe one of those CTA security guards that are part of their bloated budget? What they hell are THEY doing? But if, like Chicago said, they are just STANDING there for hours, doing their business, how hard is it to disrupt that? No "businesses" stays in an area where it's difficult to make money. Are drug dealers any different?

There is not a foot post at a CTA station. That station could be part of a footguys route but that's about it. What I would like to know is why does the CTA not call the Police and sign a complaint for Criminal Trespass to Land if these thugs are hanging out there? Lock em up. That's all would take to rid the station of the problem. The Police cannot technically tell them to move without a complainant. The CTA guards are there for one purpose and that is to protect the property of the CTA. Nothing else.

Craig, what do you want the Commander to say? Where would he say it? At a beat meeting? That is the only real place for his commentary as the MSM won't run with the story. Did you call him? Call his office. He will speak to you.

Craig, for the record, the Commander is a good guy. He will work with you and anybody else that has a genuine interest in the community and is not there simply to be a rabble rouser. I wasn't a big Caluris guy as he was more of a bean counter. The new guy is the real deal. Call him, let him know that you want to work with him to solve the problems in RP. He is not the boogeyman.

He's been pretty good recently at getting my questions answered.

Not on this case.

I'd like to know if it's a male or female who was hit.

I'd like to know if they've got a good description of the shooter.

Was this gang related?

There is not a foot post at a CTA station.Big daddy, not sure what you mean by this? Do you mean the Morse el station entrance is not part of the foot patrol route (or whatever it's called)?

The Police cannot technically tell them to move without a complainant.I understand this, but doesn't the mere presence of a cop have the effect of clearning out a place? I've seen it happen and there's no "violation of my civil rights" issue affected at all. Even if an officer just "hangs out" there for a while, doesn't that break up the collection of muggers, drug dealers, etc.?

The CTA station may be part of a footmans area that he is supposed to cover. It may or may not in this case, I don't know. And yes, sometimes our mere presence makes people leave, lol. When I was a young patrolman, I used to grab a cup of coffee and park my squad car right in front of the dope dealers house. I would stay there as long as possible. Just parked. I made it a point to spend every single free minute parked in front of their drug store. I even ate my lunch there. It cost them money and drove them nuts, lol. But the main thing was I shut them down. If only for the time that I was there.People came up to me and thanked me. So your right in that regard.

The CTA station may be part of a footmans area that he is supposed to cover. It may or may not in this case, I don't know. How can someone find this out? Or is that a ridiculous question, because if I knew, then the thugs would know and...well, I guess they could plan accordingly. But it seems like the el station would be a must-stop for any beat walking.

And yes, sometimes our mere presence makes people leave, lol. I've seen that too and, yeah, it is pretty funny to see them scatter like roaches. I actually live up on Bryn Mawr right near Sheridan but I've spent SO much time in Rogers Park in the past 12-plus years that I feel like an honorary citizen (hang out at the bars, girlfriend lives there, etc.), and occasionally in the summer I see a bunch of folks hanging out on the corners (particularly Winthrop and Bryn Mawr on the south side of the street). They sit out there and talk loud, commander the corner, make people walking home from work go around them, etc., and it's pretty obvious what's going on. But when the beat cop comes around on his usual rounds, it's hilarous to see all of the big-talkers slowly break off in all directions.

True, the minute the patrolman leaves they come right back, but I like to see it disperse them and drive them nuts.

Well, BigDaddy - my guess is that the CTA person doesn't call because that would require them to actually work and get off the phone with their friend they are chatting with. It's really interesting to get your take on things from the police perspective - thanks! (and yes, I love to see the no-gooders scramble like roaches too!)
