Child Shot on Pratt

This area of Rogers Park is going to hell in a handbasket.
A child was shot late Friday near Ashland Avenue and Pratt Boulevard in the Rogers Park neighborhood. Source/Read more.
Three shootings this week. Are our public officials going to continue to remain silent about this area? What's it going to take to get their attention? Swine flu.... Lakefront parking.... What can be so hard about policing this area? It's already equipped with a couple of those fancy police cameras.

And for gosh sakes. What the hell was a nine year old doing out after curfew in the first place?

I can't believe there's been three shootings in that area this week. Wow. Who the hell is being stupid enough to be shooting like this anyway? Oh, I think I may know that answer: gangs. I'm starting to get nervous since I have to return to Sullivan starting Monday. I don't want to be a vitcim.

Unfortunely, the 9 yr old is just one of many (and many) kids who were or are out after curfew tonight. Curfews, down here in 25, have caused so many street fights it's not funny. Heck, someone was shot to death from one.

No offense, but let not jump to conclusions about this kid.
Who's to say the 9 yr old was alone? Maybe he/she was with family walking home from their car after a family event. I know that we have come home late with our child.
I know this area is a problem, I have seen the groups hanging out as I come home from work at night. I don't think I have even seen a child this young.

Where the FUCK is JOE FUCKING MOORE?
Fucking doushbag is MIA on a matter that could even get him air time on the media outlets.
But then he might actually be pressed to answer a journalists question about "crime being down."
F-ing Assh0le!!

Probably shopping for an outfit to wear in tomorrows Gay Pride Parade. He's float #106.

Hmmm...Pratt and Ashland. That couldn't possibly be near the section 8 bldg at Pratt and Bosworth??

Yeah, we'd all like to know just where Joe Moore is at times like this. He always absents himself from any discussion of really serious crimes that take place in the area.

The area around Pratt& Ashland has many things contributing to the violence there. First, there is the CHA townhouse cluster at Pratt and Bosworth. There is also 1735 W. Pratt, which is now one of the area's slummiest buildings. It's polluted the buildings next to it, as well. Then there is that mid-rise sump on the southeast corner of Pratt & Clark, which has always been a garbage dump.

Moore has been of no assistance in cleaning up these and other problem properties in the ward. That's the diff between RP and Edgewater. That area has a number of mangy, low-rent buildings, but Mary Ann Smith makes it very clear to the owners that certain things won't be tolerated, and that if their buildings produce crime, they'll be hauled into housing court and perhaps be forced to sell or vacate their properties. The grounds for serious legal action against a building are things like Harboring Criminal Activity and Neighborhood Endangerment. The place at 1735 W. Pratt, for example, has been a big problem for a long time, and the midrise at Pratt & Clark has been completey horrid just about forever. I called the place at 1735 in as possibly harboring a meth lab, last year, after an apt-hunting friend checked the place out and reported strong chemical fumes in the hallways.

But no matter how often we call and how much we complain, certain property owners are permitted to run their buildings completely with no regard for the safety and well-being of the neighborhood.

A float huh, How supportive... Where's the parade again? Isn't it somewhere's around Broadway and Belmont... That doesn't seem Ward 49-ish.
And, how is the float/etc paid for?

I stand by my previous post;
F-ing MF-ing POS!

Keep calling and emailing his office asking about crime and continued section 8 housing. It is obvious that Section 8 housing contributes in a HUGE way to crime!! I am sick of him ignoring the people in his district to get press time. Edgewater continues to get better and we continue to get worse!

My bad...thanks for the correction North Coast. Bldg at Pratt and Bosworth is CHA not section 8. Does anyone here know of the level of accountability between the two when lodging complaints. I've had too many problems walking near that corner and just avoid it completely.

Regarding the comparisons between Edgewater and RP. Our hood starts off with so much more. Better beaches and parks along the lake (not the fake ones created by Lake Shore Drive) And we have RETAIL along Sheridan where Edgewater has none. Not to mention Loyola and proximity to Evanston. And yet after living here almost 1 year I still find myself missing the relative calm of Edgewater where I previously lived for 5 years. There is NO REASON Rogers Park should be worse off than Edgewater except for the 17 year (correct me if I'm wrong) tenure of a certain Mr Moore.

What's with this corner? Scanner chatter has a possible suicide at Ashland and Pratt.

Most of us have been noticing since we've lived here, Craig, for all the good it does us.

I have listened for 12 years as other residents of this ward and the 40th and 50ths express outrage at the prevalence of crime and social problems and yet, come election time, they keep voting the same stooges back in. What does it frigging take to get people off their apathetic bums and out to at least vote?

Moore has been the butt of derision for almost as long as he's been in office. O'Connor in the 40th, while not directly harmless, is a doorknob, a useless paperweight. Bernie in the 50th was good once but is now pretty far past his prime and the deteriorating conditions of his ward show it. West Ridge and West Rogers Park were pristine just five years ago but now the blight and crime are spreading over there with horrifying speed.

IF YOU DIDN'T VOTE, DON'T JUMP ON THESE BLOGS AND BITCH. The apathy around here sickens me. I hear one poster in here, who posts occasionally, bleat about how the world would be a better place if only property owners were permitted to vote? REALLY? Then where in the hell were all the "owners" last election? Not at the polls, I can tell you. I'm a renter and have enough of a stake in my neighborhood and city that I can at least rouse myself to examine the candidates and vote. Gordon lost the 2007 election by a lousy 200 votes, which is an incredibly strong showing for an absolute newcomer to electoral politics. If only all the people in the Edgewater end of the ward had come out to vote instead of staying home because the were "appalled" at the "nastiness" of the campaign, we might have a chance to reverse some of the damage done this ward in the past 35 years by Joe and his mentor Orr.

Are you an "owner" who sat out the last election because you were disgusted by the mud slinging such as accompanies any political contest with anything real at stake? Or because Gordon wasn't a "perfect" candidate? Perfect, hell, I'd happily vote for somebody's cat at this point. Nobody is perfect, and warts will show under the scrutiny of a campaign. Is what we have "perfect" and is 20 years damn long enough of a "chance"? Let's give someone- anyone who isn't Joe or one of his associates- a chance next time.

I'm with you North Coast - people need to get out and vote! I didn't live up here the last election but voted in my own area. I used to watch Moore on TV and wonder why the people kept voting that lughead into office!

AvondaleLoganSquareCrimeBlotter said...

North Coast, maybe people don't vote because all of the politics are corrupted? Why bother voting if all they do is take a bribe, steal money, etc. Yes, each and every one of them are corrupted, at least in my opinion. I don't even bother to look at their faces anymore.

AvondaleLoganSquareCrimeBlotter said...

But also, NC, I do agree with one point you made. If the voters don't want Joe Moore (or any other aldermen for that matter) in office, they shouldn't keep putting him back in.

The North Coast said...

Jimmy, voting in and of itself won't cure corruption, but it's the first place you start in becoming less apathetic.

Corruption is caused by citizen apathy in conjunction with a system rigged to give our leaders too much discretion over too many things that should strictly speaking not be left solely to the mayor, say, or a particular alderman or official; and too little accountability.

We can't make positive changes if we don't at least do the minimum. YES, it takes much more to be a citizen than to just turn out to make a choice between one loser or the other. But someone who won't be bothered to do this much is hardly even a citizen.

AvondaleLoganSquareCrimeBlotter said...

I will agree with what you said in your post because it's true (and I was just saying what I said since I have a couple of family and friends who don't vote), but besides us voting, is there any way the system can be fixed?

Razldazlrr said...

Jimmy - you should encourage your family and friends to vote. Every person in this country, no matter color, stature, wealth etc has an equal vote. There have been elections in the past few years that have been decided by 200 votes. It's the only way we can get new faces in. (Now, the money to back the people into office is another story)

AvondaleLoganSquareCrimeBlotter said...

I've tried, but they won't. Doesn't really matter to me since when I turn 18, I'm registering to vote. I actually can't wait to start voting.

Oh, and by the way, my name's Timmy. Just thought I'd let you guys know that.
