A store employee was found bound and badly beaten with a tire iron in the East Rogers Park neighborhood late Sunday after he told two would-be robbers that he didn't have access to the store's safe, police said.
The clerk, a man in his 40s, had locked up and left the Devon Market, 1440 W. Devon Ave., when the two men accosted him shortly after 11 p.m. and attempted to force him back inside to open the safe, said Rogers Park District police Lt. John Franklin.
When he told them he was unable to either get back into the store or open the safe, they tied his wrists with plastic flex cuffs, put him into a car and beat him with a tire iron, Franklin said. "He was beaten head to toe," Franklin said. Source/Read more.

This is just disgusting to read. Good article, Craig, but I'm just disgusted that a crime like this occurred, especially at the MARKET of all places (and I have to go there with my class on Tuesdays). I hope the store clerk is ok and not totally traumatized from this (though I wouldn't blame him if he was, I would be too). Let's hope these disgusting people who commited this crime serve their punishment. I'm also kind of hoping they get a beat down theirselves.
This is a dreadful crime.
I only hope the store employee did not sustain crippling injuries, or injuries that lead to death.
The people who did this are monsters. These are the types of criminals who cannot be rehabilitated and need to be locked up for life. But even people with 1st degree murder are released and walk the streets unhindered, so ineffective is our justice system.
What really annoys me about this article is that they never mention the race of the suspects. So how do the citizens know who to look for in order to help catch these criminals.
Terrible news...I probably saw the store employee just yesterday, as I shop there a lot. Here's hoping for a speedy recovery. I'd bet they're going to have more people on closing duty, or at least not leaving the store alone, for a while.
There was a knife fight this morning in the 1500 block of west Fargo.
On Saturday my wife and I were bringing the kids back from the beach. I was on my blades pushing the jogging stroller and my wife was jogging along side. We got Ashland and Morse by the ethnic book fair ~1pm when 2 kids riding on one bike made an aggressive loop back at us, then pointed a starter pistol at me capped a couple of rounds then pointed at my wife's face and capped 2 more. This was within a foot or so of her face.
To clarify this was a blank shooting pistol not a cap gun.
Now these were 10-12 yr old kids, being in a hurry I just let it go.
Not like kids ride up and shoot people in this neighborhood anyway.
What would any of you done?
PS. At the beach we witnessed 2-3 drunken brawls among the local drunken brawling ass holes that reside on the beach.
Yes we called it in as did some of the other locals, the cops did come down and chat with the group but no arrest or searches for alcohol.
Good to know that after back to back months of 70 hours a week that when I finally get to take advantage of our beach and find the RP campers are running the Show.
So how do the citizens know who to look for in order to help catch these criminals.
Look for a guy with a tire iron. That might be your first clue.
Just got back from Morse Market.
The Clerk is still in the Hospital and will likely need a few days off to recover.
I will be dropping off a get well cards at Dukes and the Common Cup for those who wish to sign or contribute something (that is if it is OK with Dukes and Common Cup).
PS Devon market offers some of the best Lithuania wine deals around. Their bakery just expanded its line as well. This is truly a great RP institution.
What would any of you done?
Hard to say. Things like this you really have no way of anticipating as no one expects two kids on a bike to point a gun at their face while jogging in the park in the middle of the afternoon. I might have reacted by trying to cover us, but by the time I realized what had happened and that everyone was OK, I doubt I would have been able to catch them on foot. The best you could have done was follow them as far as you could and get a GOOD description (clothing, type of bike, any special marks on the bike or the kids, etc.) and call the cops. Note the general direction they went, etc. But give the cops as complete a description as you can. Sure they probably won't be able to find them (the "kids" ditch the bike, change their clothes, etc.) but you have to do SOMETHING.
As for the drunks gathering in the park, yeah, call the cops. Often. Make the cops arrest SOMEBODY or at the very least, chase them off, just so they don't get anymore phone calls. You can also text in a 911 call on the CPD Text2Tip line (Text2Tip. Not sure if it works as well actually calling 911, but it's worth a shot (Maybe Big Daddy can clue us in on this one). But I'm a proponent of calling the cops on "unruly" gatherings. It's a short hop from "just some guys hanging out drinking" to someone popping off a few rounds. Not too long ago there were a bunch of "kids" hanging out on the steps of a local school late into the evening and loud as hell. I was about to call the cops to run them off. I was told "oh, they're just kids" and was talked out of it. Shortly thereafter we heard several shots, hit the floor and heard the kids scattering. No one was killed, but if there were, my simple phone call might have prevented it. Personally I think everyone should flood the CPD with calls about unruly gatherings, whether it's drinking in the park (which is illegal), hanging out on the bus stop (that's private property belonging to the CTA, right?) or blocking the sidewalk (call the store owners and make them take responsibility). Everyone needs to start texting, calling and generally making a constant noise about the activities that have a potential to blow up into something much worse. Get YOUR gang of people and YOU gather on their favorite spots. All day long. Let them know that YOU live here too and they don't own the park, that bench, that stoop, that corner. Make yourself a positive nuisance.
I love Devon Market. First choice over Dominicks, Jewel, etc. Great deal on meat, good vegetables, and the aforemention ethnics food. This makes me pretty sick. Not surprised, but still sick.
I've got several responses, so I'll make this kind of quick.
North Coast, Pa Beck, Scott and Chicago: Agreed.
Craig: How many people were involved in this knife fight?
ProGun: Oh my god ... that's HORRIBLE. Is your wife ok? I hope she is. Did you guys report this to the police? I hope so. You know what I would've done? If they didn't fire shots at me, I would've taken the pistol out of their hand then point it at THEM and show them how it feels to have a pistol pointed in your face. Had they fire shots at me, I would've just called 911, but then if I saw them again sooner or later, if they didn't have the gun and if it was just the sole shooter by himself, I would've beaten the crap out of them.
Everyone: I know this is not RP related, but half a dozen people were shot in Austin then some thug kid got shot blocks from my house. Needless to say, we're all on edge today.
MOTS:
HAHAHAHA. HAHAHA. AHHHAHAHA.
Good one.
Because the idiots who did this have a tire iron sewed onto their back.
NOT.
MEDIA:
GIVE. DESCRIPTIONS. OF. OFFENDERS.
PLEASE!
Have mercy. . .reminds me of the time one of my uncles was beat with a tire iron. Nearly killed him. I hope justice prevails, but unfortunately, a lot of times, it doesn't. The guys who beat my uncle were never caught, and that happened over 35 years ago.
My wife did not perceive it as a threat like I did.
But I never told her about the time 5 years ago when I was walking to the El with my daughter going to a day game when a gun fight broke out by Soo liquors. Had to duck and roll with my daughter strapped to me. She giggled and seemed to think the gymnastics was fun.
Or the time I was walking through Touhy park when shots rang out and several cars were hit as one kid chased another kid while shooting.
Or the times that I came on goonings in progress and dispersed the attackers or the attempted robbery of Hanhs liquors on Devon.
Just some of the few gun related incidents over my +20 yrs here.
So really I just did not want to spend any time talking to the police or kick some little kids ass.
I just wanted to spend some quality time with the family and get back to the house so my youngest could take a nap.
PS. My middle son likes to sing GO Cubs Go and he got to do that 4 times over the weekend.
@proGun
Sorry to hear about your and family experience.
Regarding the beach incident. If you are unhappy with CPD officer action, for whatever reason, call 911 back immediately, say you're unhappy, and insist on speaking to a sergeant (they're in cars patrolling the neighborhood as well). One will stop by.
Regarding the gun pointing. Yes, you should have called 911. If these were 10 to 12 years old as you say, their parents have failed them, they need to get the message from elsewhere that that their behavior is inappropriate and will not be tolerated. They're not going to serve "time," but they need to get the message that other people will hold them responsible for their actions. In the event of any similar incidents, if you can follow from a safe distance and get more info, do so. But stay online with 911 while doing so. And regarding the advice of "Chicago," you'll only do yourself harm by getting physical with 10 to 12 year olds, even in the situation you described.
Unrelated to this symptom of the RP culture that needs to go...The hot dog cart guy was run out of Touhy and the lake by michael land today. I guess this RP lifer that was trying to be a little slice of the good old days at the beach posed a threat to someone...
Benard, what can we do if we're unhappy with the police dispatchers or the moron call takers? I want to know because I just had a nasty experience with a call taker. Could I just call the number I have for the Zones and explain the situation?
inside job: Your OT was very intersting. Has the Ald.'s office taken the law into it's own hands?
Why would Michael Land get rid of the Hot Dog Man? Better yet, who told Michael Land to get rid of him, and does Michael Land have to authority to remove a street vendor?
Please e-mail me: GrammarGal9@gmail.com ASAP. Thanks, inside job!
Drinking in ANY park is illegal...start there by dealing with that, especially regarding those who are out of control and have NO RESPECT for the rules and bounds of 'civilized' behavior. IMHO, IT'S WAY PAST TIME for the police to apply the "Broken Windows" theory of restoring control and "quality of life" to our neighborhood. That means zero tolerance for ANY infraction of the law, period! 'They' don't allow 'that' kind of behavior on the Mayor's block and we're 'paying the freight'!
No I was not dissatisfied with the officers method. The group did eventually disperse and some semblance of order was established.
Just curious as to what his options are at that moment?
I would have called the police. I agree with other posters - call the police, call the Alderman's office, etc - let them know that it's not ok!
I am SO SICK and tired of the people at the beach you call the RP Campers! I often take my dogs off the path and walk another way so I don't have to pass them. I made the mistake of being nice a couple of times and now they always bug me wanting money, etc. Yesterday I noticed they once again have their blankets all around the park and were sleeping early - like it is a campground! time to start complaining to the alderman's office again about it!
Man on the Street- The CPD thrives on calls for service. Every time a problem or complaint arises the first thing we do is look for calls for service. So needless to say, I'm a big proponent of making the call even if you think nothing will be done. I'm not a big fan of this new texting thing. I favor getting on the phone with a person and telling them my problem and demanding immediate action. A text message can get lost too easily.
I also see a direct correlation between things like drinking in the park and gang violence. NOBODY should be allowed to drink an alcoholic beverage on the public way and that includes the beach. I also believe in closing the beaches at the proper time. The only time this rule would be relaxed is when it's obvious on hot, summer nights that the people using the beach are peace loving families not looking for trouble as opposed to gangsters. When I was a young patrolman, I worked in a District that covered part of Lake Michigan. When I worked midnites and we didn't close the beach we had nothing but trouble. I soon learned that the best thing to do to stop the violence was to go to the beaches right out of roll call and shut them down. When we did that, presto, no problems for the rest of the night. When people realize that the law will be enforced, they usually go elsewhere to act the fool. Drinking on the public way, remaining at a beach or park when they are closeed are all things that while at first glance may appear to be minor things, can all lead up to much nastier situations. I'd much rather have a guy get mad at me for making him leave the beach than to deal with his being shot, beaten up or murdered later on in the evening.
Big Daddy for 24th District Commander!!!
?question? when making a 911 call from the lakefront, i.e., Loyola Park, how does one provide the location? I do not have the street names memorized and there's no street signs in the park.
Thanks MCL, but I don't see that happening soon. But really, this isn't brain surgery. If you enforce the minor stuff, you set the tone for the area. People will know that you can't go to a certain area (your pick) because the Police will be there and prevent you from doing your thing. Take fireworks. We are overwhelmed with firework disturbances on July 4. But ask yourself why. IMHO, I think a big reason for it is because we make no effort to stop it. If we started arresting people for setting off fireworks, even if it's a small number of arrests, the people doing it may think twice before they do decide to do it. Make a concerted effort to stop it and I think you will see these ridiculous street firework displays minimized. But we don't do that. We ignore it, hell some coppers are even the worst offenders in this. But start enforcing these minor city ordinance violations and I think the payoff would be huge. I have always maintained that the Disorderly Conduct charge is one of the most important tools in my toolbox.
Big Daddy - This is good to hear! I always felt bad calling the police to report kids walking down the street screaming profanities and causing trouble. Though most incidents did not involve the harm of someone, I always got really agitated and annoyed by their behavior! I think a family should be able to walk in peace down the street without having to hold their kids ears, or pick up junk in their yard.
I agree with MCL, "Big Daddy for 24th District Commander"!!!
AMEN BIG DADDY!!!! Can you patrol North of Howard on a regular basis?
I second that... will happily support Big Daddy for area commander.
WHY ARE CHICAGO RESIDENTS SO DAMN NAIVE? THE ANSWER TO THE CRIME PROBLEM IN CHICAGO IS LEGAL CONCEALED CARRY OF HAND GUNS! WE NEED TO START SHOOTING BACK AT THE THUGS THEN WATCH THE CRIME RATE DROP AND THE INNOCENT VICTIM RATE DECLINE!I THINK MAYOR DALEY SHOULD GO EVERYWHERE WITH OUT ARMED BODYGUARDS WITH GUNS SO HE CAN BE LIKE ONE OF US! HE'S A HYPOCRITE!
