Hi Craig and Toni,
Still
no Water Dept. action on the 1800 block of Touhy Ave. (other than signage) after 9 days. FYI:
Toni I could not find any place on the City's web site to report a broken water main ("water on the street" apparently refers to drainage problems) but I did call 311 (again) today. I was told they know about it, and they have no idea when it will be fixed.
Meanwhile, El Rio Touhy keeps flowing, and flowing, and flowing...Thanks for posting.
Sincerely,
Ortis

A woman from the Alderman's office had told me that services have been cut way back with the city's budget shortfalls. Also, many projects that were supposed to be completed have been put on hold for the Olympics bid - lots of our funds went to projects on the south side. And....who really wants the Olympics again??
El Rio Touhy is no more. The Water Dept. showed up at around 12:45 am. Work was completed around 3:00 am! Thanks again, Craig.
Raz, it shows you how clueless the supporters of the Olympics are that they do not see the connection between our deteriorated infrastructure and starved services- and the money being committed to this idiotic athletic event.
I'll be posting a petition to withdraw our bid for the Olympics sometime this weekend. Come on over to my blog and sign. Look for it around Sunday or so.
Soooo, this would mean the Water Dept. workers were probably paid overtime, causing the cost of the repair to skyrocket, right?
Probably.
right!
Bravo Craig
this is ok photo.
but ofcourse could be better
I miss your photos......
Something to remember the times...
The water dept. has night crews. Paid overtime is no more. Comp time is given instead.
I thought my water pressure was low on Tuesday. I went to the city's website and filled out the low water pressure form expecting to get a response sometime around never.
My wife called me in the afternoon telling me there was a crew of 5 guys in hardhats on the lawn. They spoke with her...turns out the water pressure was fine. We felt a little silly. They were very nice.
Go figure!
the olympics would be an amazing thing for the economy of the city. i wish people would stop whining about it and suck it up. it would be a great thing for chicago.
Chris - would love to know what "information" you are basing that comment on. Look at the cities that have had the Olympics in the past. Vancouver is now almost bankrupt and they raised the taxes of the people living there sky high. We seem to have no money now for very basic services and upkeep of this city - how could they possibly afford the Olympics?
I've been seeing problems like this all over the city: sinkholes, broken mains, etc.
craig, i was at a friend's house the other day on the 6500 block of north glenwood and noticed a similar hole off to the side of the street, on the parkway, with water just gushing through it. it was flowing really fast, and it smelled like drinking water. i'm guessing it had been called in already as there was one of those construction barricades near it, but i don't think it's been fixed yet.
will the olympics really want to be in the city where money to fix basic infrastructure goes to waste in favour of making plans for bigger events? i think not.
chris, most cities that host the olympics never recover economically. look at atlanta, ffs.
