Crime reports on 25 August 2009 in Rogers Park

Hello, everyone. It is 3:30pm on a warm and sunny afternoon, both in Rogers Park and in my own neighborhood. But anyway, I'm here to monitor crime for a little while. Today, my speciality with calls in 24 will be for Battery. I'm going to especially look into this. So, here's the calls on the 5-0 (police) radio.

3:31pm - Beat 2488Adam is doing a gang dispersal at 1632 West Jonquil Terrace. The event number on this is 11314. No number on how many people are being dispersal. A plate, in traffic I believe, was also ran.

3:49pm - Beat 2482Foot is doing an "L" check at the Howard Red Line stop. I wonder what he'll find. Anyhow, the event number for this check is 11687. Also, he's doing some foot patrol, and that event number is 11699.

3:56pm - We've got a domestic in the works here. The boyfriend, AKA Baby Daddy, is fighting with the girlfriend. Sounds like a heated dispute to me. What can this argument be about? Who knows, because dispatch didn't have a reason on her ticket. Location of this is at 1656 West Juneway. Update, at 4:07pm - 2423's asking for a call back over here. I'm a little surprised, since Baby Momma/Daddy arguments are usually loud. Update, at 4:16pm - Voice mall on the call back. It's being coded.

3:57pm - Then there's the harasser. He's standing in front of the location, harassing people. Dispatch didn't say (it probably didn't say on her ticket) what he was harassing them about. Who knows. Maybe money? Drugs? Like I said, who knows. Location of this would be none other than 6720 North Sherdian Road. Update, at 4:08pm - They're calling back. This time, the male took off his shirt. He's holding it in his hand. Now he's also running into Sherdian Road. Oh boy. He's gonna get himself killed, running into a busy street such as Sherdian. Update #2, at 4:11pm - This job's getting coded. 5Edward. I guess they don't see the male, or he's not there.

4:01pm - Another "L" check is being done at the Howard Red Line station. Event number for this one is 11897.

4:02pm - Foot patrol is also being done at Howard L, on the east side of the station. The radio cut out on me while dispatch was reading out the event number.

4:14pm - There's a group of males fighting in the street. What can this be about? All I hope is that it isn't a gang fight. Location of this "WWE match (as I'm calling it)" is at 1101 West Columbia. Update, at 4:15pm - Beat car 2431 is on scene. There's no fighting. A code will be given shortly.

4:27 to 4:35pm - There is a pretty serious auto accident at the intersection of Sherdian and Howard. At first, it sounded like your usual accident with injures, but now traffic control is being requested at the scene. Beat 2430 is requesting traffic control at Sherdian and Fargo, from this accident. 2485 was assigned, but they're at 35th and Michigan at CPD HQ. 2430 sounds annoyed by this. No life threatening injures at Sheridan and Howard. It's a bad accident, though, because now multiple units are being requested for traffic control. Two immediate tows are needed at Howard and Sheridan. Craig, maybe you should head over for coverage? Updates, at 4:36pm - It's a roll over accident, and the accident actually took place at Sherdian and Birchwood. Update, at 4:37pm - It's a truck VS a car. CTA wrecker may be needed.

4:37pm - Gang disturbance. Clark and North Shore. Report of a group, in upwards of ten to twelve on 'em, causing a big disturbance. They're flashing signs, drinking, blocking the street, and they're all over.

4:50pm - I'm finished monitoring crime up in the 24th District today. I shall be back another time :). If I get bored again tonight, I'll come back for a little bit. Have a nice day. Note: Once again, not everything was noted.

Craig reporting:

8:14 PM: Gang fight at the Morse Avenue EL. Lot's of brawlers fighting in the street. Someone's going to get hurt.

Whoo-hoo. Group fight in the street.

Thanks for the coverage, Timmy.

No problem :).

About the 8:14pm gang fight, are there any other details to it?

Fuzzy Logic said...

That truck vs car...I saw the aftermath. There was a red car in front, probably stopped (maybe turning left off of Sheridan?) and another car behind it. This truck smashed into the other car which just got sandwiched between the truck and the red car. Both airbags were deployed and the truck and backseat were just gone. I'm glad to read no life was lost. If anyone had been in the back seat of that car, the story would have been different.

Thanks, Timmy!

In my previous post, meant to say the "trunk and the backseat of the car were gone"

Timmy, seems the one gang placed graffiti in another gangs territory. That's cause for a good whoop-down. It's called retaliation. It's what Joe Moore does to people who don't follow his lead.

Craig Gernhardt said...

I went by this accident myself. It was bad.

Off topic. Hey, you even think they'll put another coat of asphalt down? Or are they going to leave Sheridan Road 1 inch short of the original road?

Craig, is this in reference to the Morse fight, or the Columba one?

Fuzzy Logic, no problem :).

Does anyone have pics of this accident? If so, Craig (if that's alright with you) or I can add it to this post :).

Fuzzy Logic said...

It does seem strange that they seem to be getting the lane paint down while we still have an inch or two height difference between Sheridan and all the side roads. Maybe this is some new "every street starts with a speed bump" thing.

I didn't take any pics, sorry.

called the cops a ton tonight
for gangbangers hanging out at wayne and farwell.

its the hot corner,
the great off morse spot to hang out.

tonight more than usual

20 plus sketchy people
trolling around like zombies.

Holy cow!

Philip McGregor Rogers said...

my mom was watering the flowers on the corner of wayne and farwell tonight
and some of the people loitering threatened to cut people?

so cops and my mom were able to track them down
and they are arrested.

good.

none of my neighbors call the cops at wayne and farwell
its just me

weird.
its why they like the corner,
so many noncaring residents and owners and absentee landlords abound

Geez-the street sound rough this summer!

All of this from a police report during a single afternoon and a gang fight too(good job keeping the information up-to-the moment Timmy).

The phrases " that's a real heart-breaker",'critical mass' and 'deteriorating infrastructure' comes to my mind when I read these reports. :(

Imagine the loss of innocence, security, sensitivity and appreciation for the simpler pleasures that life may offer by street thug violence. It can leave me tongue-tied! :&

Something that's not so simple: If any of these street fighting kids become seriously wounded and require medical attention in a hospital will affordable health coverage be there for them to convalesce properly? :0

One of the few that could have answered this question passed away quite late last night.

Ted Kennedy, whose sister Eunice died earlier this month, succumbed to brain cancer at the age of 77 leaving me feeling grim. :[

August 2009 has been one heck-uv-a month for politicians (national, international)and those strongly associated with politics:
Eunice Shriver,Kim Dae-jung, Robert Novak and now the liberal lion.

With all of these high profile deaths this season one might wonder what Ed Mcmahon started two months ago when he decided to leave left planet Earth.

Or does that morose credit go to David Carradine?

It truly is the twilight of an era.

I note that for his constant senate presence, sometime notorious press and Obama legacy Ted Kennedy had a spectacular hair line for a septuagenarian.

A widow's peak I think they call it. ;)

I'd like to take a moment and remember Mary Jo Kopechne, who died on July 18, 1969 at the young age of 28.

AvondaleLoganSquareCrimeBlotter said...

That's alright, Fuzzy :).

jeffo: I'm glad you called the cops (even though I live nearly an hour from RP) about last night's action on Wayne and Farwell. That's some pretty serious stuff. Don't they have anything better to do? No, of course not. It's good to know you got the ones threatening people arrested. But, regarding yourself being the only one calling, don't feel bad. Or, in other words, join the club. Whenever something happens on my block, I'm litterally the only one who calls.

Newgarder, there was some more stuff besides this I have here. I didn't write those down, because people were saying I reported too much stuff. This is probably how it usually gets on a hot afternoon like yesterday. Thanks for the complient :).

What he did to Mary Jo Kopechne will ensure his receiving a "very warm" welcome at his next stop. I suspect those pitchforks will hurt.

ms21 said...

Hey Craig,

Yes, they will put more asphalt down. This first layer is the binder course, that's why the temporary striping is down. Hopefully no one is killed between no and then. Turning left from Sheridan on to East Pratt is really scary.

Man On The Street said...

Big gang fight. Only 8:14 in the evening. Still sort of light. People coming and going to their homes. And a big gang fight at the el stop.

Once again, they act with impunity because they CAN act with impunity.

Anybody ever impeach an alderman?

Pepper said...

Right, Ted Kennedy should burn in Hell.

Or perhaps since he recently "bought the farm," he'll need to learn proper pitchfork handling?

sheesh

RIP

Big Daddy - just what I was thinking - he is ending up as some kind of hero in the media - It was horrible what he did to Mary Jo Kopechne and the average "guy" wouldn't have been able to get away with it (and supporting his nephew who surely killed the girl next door) etc etc

Sheridan - people are driving on it like it's a speedway!!

Pepper said...

re: Ted Kennedy...

Define a human being by one horrible regrettable event and discount a lifetime of service for the public good? Damn him to hell? Really?

They've pretty much always done that. Can't tell you how many accidents I've seen when they hit that turn just past Howard going into Evanston.

May God bless Teddy Kennedy and take him into His eternal light forever and ever. Amen.

In addition to killing Mary Jo, Teddie nearly drove his poor wife, Joan, insane. Being a Kennedy female was enough to turn any woman into a slobbering, med-crazed lune, but Joan had to deal with a drunk whose family was trying to intimidate her into remaining married to him.

Rose and Joe Kennedy were horrid people. They had poor Kathleen lobotomized and buried in a mental institution for life (where she died in a fire) because she did not uphold the family image. The Kennedy patriarch was very big on the image of the family. The Kennedy men had total contempt for women, which they manifested in every relationship they had.

I'm still suspicious about Marilyn Monroe's death. One prominent mobster's wife, in a taped phone conversation, referred to Frank Sinatra as "nothing but a pimp for the Kennedy Brothers". Marilyn was not known for her wisdom concerning human relationships and she was not discrete. I still can't quite believe JFK would have had anything done to her, bad as he was, but I would put nothing past old Joe Kennedy.

Just like there was a group fight in 24 on Columba yesterday, we got ours in 25 on Wrightwood two hours ago. It was so bad that an officer had to call for back up.

Rachael Slur said...

Dear little Timmy:
Thank you very much for your hard and on-going work of listening in to the neighbors for all of us who can't. It is very useful as I plan my day.

Big Daddy said...

Pepper, when that "one horrible regretable event" is the loss of an innocent persons life and the failure to rescue that person, call for help or the subsequent attempt at covering it up, then yes, that is how you will be defined. But that's how people like you are. As long as it's not your loved one that was left to drown in a dark body of water, the rest of us should forgive him and forget about his cowardice. I wonder if you would feel the same way if Mary Jo was YOUR daughter.

Pepper said...

People like me? Alright, I'll bite.. which group(s) of lesser folk do i belong to?

If she were my daughter, i would want his head. Thankfully, I am not the American justice system. Seems that job may be yours. In addition to judge and jury, would you also take on the role of executioner, personally sending him to the fiery pits for eternity?

Resident said...

And I wonder how YOU would feel it Ted Kennedy had been a Republican.

Last night (Wednesday) 9pm or so .. Big cop action @ Rogers and Chase by liquor store. At least a dozen cops, multiple cars, even a bike or 2. Skinny kid hiding under a front porch found by several pissed off young officers. Much yelling, kid takes off out of pack of police, screaming "don't shoot me!". Half dozen cops in pursuit. Gets a couple of blocks away, caught, cuffed, stuffed in squad. One officer slightly injured in pursuit. Huge response. Cops on scene very tight lipped and none too happy. Anyone know what this kid may have done to warrant such a big deal?

The North Coast said...

pepper, if this "one event" is a murder, or unexplained death, of a person who was alone with you when her death occurred, well, that just might define you.

Had the Kennedy family not occupied the position of a powerful feudal lord in their home state, Kennedy would have been looking at homicide charges. How a man who was too "drunk" to remember that he had a young woman in the car with him was still sober enough to escape from a submerged auto, was never explained, nor did he offer an adequate excuse for failing to notify authorities for 10 hours after the event.

The Kennedy men always reminded me of the worst of the feudal nobles of old, who trampled their vassals' crops, raped their daughters, and put them to death for protesting.

Big Daddy said...

Pepper, the kind of people who are willing to let him slide for what he did to Mary Jo when truth be told, if his last name was Smith or Jones he would probably be starting his parole right about now. The kind of people who are willing to forget or have forgotten what he did because he had a "lifetime of public service". The kind of people who are willing to let him slide because after all, it was not their loved one that was left to drown in a car, it was somebody elses loved one, the kind of people that are so willing to forget poor behavior, like the football fans that gave Michael Vick a standing ovation when he appeared on the field for the first time yesterday did, the kind that want to cannonize the guy and refer to him in cute terms when what they should be calling him is a convicted felon. Those kind.

Rachael Slur said...

Dear Fellow Rogers Parkers:
Mr. Ted Kennedy had a lifetime of service defending those who are disadvantaged and downtrodden by the capitalist society in which we live. He may have made a mistake or he may have been dazed after the accident and was not thinking clearly. We should never forget this giant of progressive politics who has done so much for this country's poor and minority populations. God take him to heaven at once and bless his name forever and ever.
.

Pepper said...

Great. Thanks for clearing it up for me guys. Any issues of moral complexity will be run by you first.

THE quote of the month: "The Kennedy men always reminded me of the worst of the feudal nobles of old, who trampled their vassals' crops, raped their daughters, and put them to death for protesting."

Anymore room in that hyperbolic chamber of laughs?

Wow, you're not kidding are you?

I'm going to go stand over there now, the airs getting too thick with high horseshit.

The saying goes that there must be remorse and repentance before redemption. The story of Mary Jo Kopechne should should be remembered and retold.
