Can one imagine that one leaps into a placid lake, possibly at the behest of a companion, and suddenly cannot rise to the surface because as this is attempted something is tugging at the leg, foot, arm or torso-perhaps even the neck or head?
At that moment does one quickly assume that this must be a minor situation which will be quickly resolved?
As the seconds collect into minutes panic must have had to of set in.
Then the mouth begins to open as the lungs require oxygen letting a little water in so the teeth and lips are clamped tighter.
Yet with the extreme struggling the brain and body requires more oxygen but the leg(s)or arm(s)aren't free.
Even if intoxicated to expire from something so seemingly simple as a jump in the lake?
Whoa!
Except for the sad demise of a precious individual,at this moment, the incident doesn't seem to be profound to or an impetus for anything in itself.
What happened may not mark a moment and even if it does why is there a need for "sacrifice" to reach this conclusion?
If no conclusion is reached or this isn't commemorated then it's just something that occurred.
Like any other thing.
Some dismal event that will be missed by the majority, soon to be disregarded by the few and, possibly, resolved by those closest to him.
I could be incorrect-perhaps this individual has a close family, friends and a well known reputation?
Maybe an obituary shall reveal this person's character and accomplishments, prolong and retain their memory?
Yet if some epitah doesn't,or if the deceased has none of this then--that's just--it.
This is what happened as relayed to me by a close friend who witnessed the whole thing. Two dudes where drinking AND DIVING OFF the pier. My friend walked right by them and said they REEKED of alcohol. They may have had fishing poles, but their shirts and shoes were off. One dived in and never came back up. They couldn't find him. After 5 minutes my friend notified one of the on-duty life guards who dismissed his concerns. After 10 minutes my friend called 911. After 15 minutes the police with assistence from life-guards were pulling him out and he appeared unconcious.
As an aside my friend got into a heated argument with the life-guard regarding whether an unconscious individual submerged in water with lungs filled with water floats or sinks? The fact they the man seemingly disappeared for 10 minutes answers the question.
I've seen some kids jumping off the pier before. They looked/sounded like eastern Europeans from the accent (and bathing suits). They would look down to the beach and make sure that the lifeguards weren't watching, then they would jump in. I wonder if it was a repeat performance or if they were older guys this time.
I hope NEWGARDER isn't swimming today...doesn't seem sober.

I feel bad for what occurred with this anonymous individual and if 13 pregnant sentences attempting to meditate on loss snidley appears as 'drunken prose' then too bad.
In considering the word pregnant perhaps Leslie and I can get together for some midnight consolation over this tragedy-ms21 gets to watch.
Y'know,I obviously owe an apology to Leslie & ms21.
To Razldazlrr and,probably,others as well.
If it means naught to them then at least to clear my conscience: The last paragraph of my last comment on this post is crude and unecessary, even tho' E-banter is fun. For what it's worth I sincerely apologize for any offense that I have given you.
I shall endeavor to further restrain myself from commenting reactively against what I (mis?)perceive as personal attacks.
On a night in December of 1991 a neighbor of mine in a Rogers Park apartment building was found dead in the lake.
My landlord contacted me and requested that I inform his lover, whom was a regular acqauintance of mine, about what occurred. It was a necessary yet unpleasant duty.
The idea that people expire and may never be noticed or remembered is profoundly disheartening to me since everyone possesses a degree of uniqueness and value as a human being.
James, we laid you to rest yesterday, and my eyes are filled with tears, you made a great impact on all of us. it was so much love yesterday at your furneral as we all spoke very highly of you. I will allways love you and miss you very much . you are a goodfriend, loyal , honest, and full of life. you past on at the place you loved the most, you have been jumping that pier for over 20 yrs and if I was their i would have called 911 as soon as you did not come up. you were the type off man who would have jumped in to look for your friend. you was so good to all of us. and I just want to say. one last time we all love you. keep us safe james, looking over us in heaven.

I'm going to guess . . . there was drinking involved!
Fishing my ass...the dudes were drunk and diving into the water. My friend saw the whole thing and called 911.
The man died.
The vague channel 7 report stated
that the two decided to jump in the lake and one of them became entangled in fishing wire.
Gah!

good god newgarder - writing a book?
I heard lots of sirens last night - that must have been it.
Where were the lifeguards?
The lifeguards don't monitor the pier too, do they? I thought they were just supposed to monitor the swimmer actually on the beach part.
something about this seems fishy.
(alright, pile on, i'm a horrible horrible person)

Newgarder - think you are totally wacked
On second thought, Newgarder, maybe you should go for a swim. I cannot advise that you jump off the pier, but what you do is your own decision.
E-banter is fun.
The lake water is very very c-l-e-a-r. Why couldn't they see him?
