Teen Crime Spree Starts in Rogers Park

Ground zero. The 2000 block of West Estes. A few teens beat the shit out of one person, steal his car, and leave him for dead.
Courtney Andrews is charged for her role as a lookout in an Aug. 9 armed robbery in the 2000 block of West Estes, according to court records. One of the offenders allegedly ran behind a 24-year-old man and struck him in the back of his head with a baseball bat, police said. They then took the victim’s wallet and the keys to his Nissan car, which was used in the second two attacks in Roscoe Village. They left the victim unconscious on the pavement.

Andrews was allegedly the lookout while one of the boys attacked the victim, who was hospitalized and needed seven stitches for lacerations above the eye, court records said.
But they weren't done. You won't believe the rest. Source/Read more.

More here, too.

The post image conveys a hard looking 17 year-old.

Leaves me relieved that I inexplicably turned around before my muggers had the chance to belt my nogg'in over the building across the street. I hope that the victim will fully recover.

The accompanying article link offers me a skewed perspective on DIE kulture.

Hey! An alternative perspective for D.I.Y. culture is the natural passage of Les Paul, perfected to
94 years,yesterday.

He,among several others, innovated the electric guitar body and contributed studio production techniques energizing generations of popular musicians to the present.

Does this person's passing portend a radical shift in other innovations which shall affect the use of now conventional instruments and subsequent musical styles in the near future?

Whatever occurs I currently appreciate another added(but too obvious)meaning to the ballad "While My Guitar Gently Weeps"!

Where's the outrage? I guess because crimes like this happen all the time around here it's no big deal.

I got an idea. Let's hold a town hall meeting regarding something meaningless. Then everyone will show up.

I didn't realize that this had happened where it did.
If you wish to voice your outrage, or to get involved come to the CAPS 2424 Beat meeting Aug 28th, 7:00pm at Pottawattomie Park.
So far this summer it has been remarkably quiet, although it seems as if in the last week negative teen activity is up -with the heat, and mid-Summer boredom I suppose-.

I live on the 2000 block of Estes and I walk my dog several times through out the afternoon and evening and I never knew this incident happened on the block until I read it here. I speak to all of my neighbors everyday when I walk my dog and I don't think they are aware of the incident either or they would of passed the information on. This is what I love about Joe "No" Moore, he keeps the community so informed. Usually the block is very quiet with the exception of a few thugs passing through heading to their daley jobs of hanging out on Howard Street. The girls parents must really be proud of her. Maybe she lost her job and has kids to feed because daddy number one,two and three are also out of work.

Holy crud! I taught Courtney during her freshman year (06-07 at Senn.) Her classmates were some of the toughest, most aggravating students I ever had but she was dedicated to doing good work and really like a life saver in that group. She was at school every day. She did volunteer events with me.

The group of students she was in class with were crazy (no, Isiah Stroud was not with them but he was a freshman at Senn the same year she was.) Courtney was one of maybe 8 or 9 students in that class that consistently came to school and one of maybe 5 that actually tried. She was the highlight of that group of students.

My google-fu shows that she was attending school last year and on the track team (so involved with extra-curriculars) and look at this: http://rogerspark.typepad.com/DCN_Jun07_LowRes.pdf

What the heck happened to her over the summer? I'm having such a hard time thinking of the Courtney I knew doing this, going to jail..

And Craig, every picture I have of Courtney from the volunteer stuff is of her smiling warmly, arms around her girl friends.

I think it's absolutely horrible!! I am so sick of the punks that run around these streets. Kids having kids and more kids and this is how they end up.

Speaking of town meetings - Jan Schakowsky is trying to hide hers, it's not on her website and I finally found it. She is behind Obama 100% on this and wants a single payer system (mind you, the members of Congress don't want to participate in it themselves!).
Her Town Hall is on August 31
at Niles West High School, 5701 Oakton Street, from 6:30 to 8pm. Enter the high school through the main entrance facing Oakton and proceed to auditorium.

..and I don't want anyone misconstruing my comment - what she did was horrible. No doubt about it. She should go to jail. She's just one of the last people I could imagine doing this. And if she could attend a relatively safe school, be involved in extra-curricular activities (which means her grades have to be a C average atleast), and still do something THAT horrible.. what chance do other kids have?

This neighborhood is getting scary. There are way too many people with no morals, values, conscience or respect for other people. All they know is take what they want from whoever they want when they want it. All it takes is two of these lowlifes to surround you when you are out alone and you become an easy target.

Yeah, people don't tend to yuk it up when they're taking mug shots. Well most don't, if they have an iota of remorse or shame...

Just glad (for us and for them) that they caught these pieces of ... wait, let me stop. Anyway, glad they caught them. Yeah, sure, maybe they'll be back on the street soon, but maybe something will happen inside that will make them very afraid of going back.

Courtney is a dear cuddly sweet loving innocent angel. And so are the lovely young gentlemen who bashed in the victim's head. You people are so quick to judge.

I wonder whether it was worth people encouraging Anita Alvarez to consider charging the sixteen year olds as adults. However, SAO discretion is critical. Maybe the 17 y.o. bitz was the inspiration.
If the kids admitted to the crime, then they did CPD a favor.

Hopefully, they can rehab for their lunacy. Kids having kids getting into trouble? Have we seen the love on the streets? Does anyone remember when Miglin was randomly killed on the Gold Coast by that guy who eventually killed himself in Miami?

For those who walk the Beat, the event was an aberation that extended to Roscoe Village. These were a bunch of pumped up fools. Yeah, I see kids group at times, but that doesn't mean that they mean any harm. A few malt liquors will not down the neighborhood; if CPD doesn't care, then do your own stalking at your own risk, of course.

Yet, I think that it does not hurt to be aware of your surroundings, even at odd times. However, it does not hurt to occasionally mind your own business when the infraction is not serious and belly ache about it at Beat Meetings, among other places. Beat 2424 has also experienced a few CPD Officers on bicycles, as well. This is an improvement.

A number of people walk with their phones attached to their ears. This is also a distraction, but they may sense some security. I find that acting like you actually live here and taking control of your surroundings makes a difference.

I wish that more people picked up the trash and used the CPD's texting system to report crime in progress. Some may feel that you cannot report it any other way. It may also make you think before you transmit. You get a handle once you are in the system.

Craig, have you thought about posting how the texting 911 system works for those in RP, who want to anonymously reach Police, but don't want to talk to a dispatcher?

Maybe some will find some power in that system.

lafew - i didn't know there was a texting system - how does that work?
***See, those are the kinds of things that Moore should be sending out in his email blasts!!! He just ignores the crime like it doesn't happen!! He should be encouraging everyone to use this texting system.
