"What’s up Charlie Brown?”

A man was charged with trying to rob a Loyola University student Tuesday afternoon in the North Side’s Rogers Park neighborhood. Derameo Johnson, 20, of the 6600 block of North Ashland Avenue, was charged with one count of attempted strong-armed robbery, a felony, according to Rogers Park District police Lt. John Franklin. Hey! They caught one!

I had to call 911
on vagrant/migrant children at 6914 n wayne yesterday at 4pm.

6914 n. wayne has the steps necessary for a bright future in careers such as street hustling, littering and vagrancy.

Glad to hear they caught the piece of s... and by Loyola security no less!

Man, 5 in the afternoon? Why would they be so bold?

Oh, yeah, right.

jeffo, you called the police about migrant children? Meaning you found out about the children coming from another country and you decided to call 911 for it? Wow. I'm not saying anything about vagrant because I don't know what the word means.

Timmy - A vagrant is a person who has no residence and wanders from place to place without any means of support, which usually results in crime.

Timmy, I found the following definitions on dictionary.com.

VAGRANT (noun) 1. a person who wanders about idly and has no permanent home or employment; vagabond; tramp.
MIGRANT (noun) 1. a person or animal that migrates. 2. Also called migrant worker, a person who moves from place to place to get work, especially a farm laborer who harvests crops seasonally.

I’m not sure why Jeffo used the term “migrant” in this instance unless, perhaps, he was observing some of the children leaving and other children arriving to replace them, hence the reference to migration but that seems like kind of a stretch.

Tim, migrants don’t necessarily come from other countries. I have a few friends, all American born, who supported themselves and their families by picking peaches in Georgia and then migrating out west with the season to pick artichokes and later to New England to pick pumpkins and winter squash. I think you may be confusing the word migrant with immigrant. The definition for immigrant, again from dictionary.com is:

IMMIGRANT (noun) a person who migrates to another country, usually for permanent residence.

I highly recommend you add dictionary.com to your favorites on your computer. As a writer, I find it an indispensible reference tool.

- PEACE -

im really sad when i look at uptown update and then i look at this blog.

This was THE blog.
now its like its in the doldrums.

Well I had to call the cops yesterday at 5pm because some kids were smoking pot on the famous steps of 6914 n wayne.

There was also a gang caucaus at about 10pm on wayne street just north of 6914 n wayne. called 911 again.

Im not sure what they are doing with wayne street. Utility work and maybe filling in more cobblestones?

But I have noticed some unsavory charactors at the 16 unit L shaped building, which has taken the block buildings place as a drug haven.

I didnt learn this by coming to this site. I had to learn it on my own. I miss the old reporting style and real local information.

jeffo, are you referring to the 16-unit on the east side of Wayne, just south of Morse? That place has been an absolute sump for a long time. The worst people in the neighborhood live in that place. It's filthy and decrepit and ugly.... needs to be vacated and taken down.

Is 6914 the rather charming little complex with little four-units clustered around an iron-gated courtyard? That could be a great place if it were renovated, but last I strolled down Wayne, I saw a lot of unsavory people hanging out on the stoops.

After school programs offerd by the City? Eye whitness and GPS places 2 squads on scene but they offer no assistance. Has this really become so common place that the police did not realize that a kid was being beaten to death?
Or were they looking to write movers or parkers if some vehicle was out of some compliance.

jeffo - agreed - those are bad buildings on wayne - should be taken to the ground.
Craig - true enough - we love this blog and we need some spiffing up - tired of it or too busy?

Philip McGregor Rogers said...

those buildings just need to be worked with.

6914 is a nice building,
its just that the tenants never ever call the cops for people hanging on the stairs and the landlord doesnt come by very much.
The Landlord actually fixes things there like the concrete steps and the lawn, but what good does that do anyone, if bad characters are allowed to hangout there.

and the 16 unit building is on the east side, just south of the video store, just needs to be fixed up and bought by someone who condoizes it or now just fixes it up for better rental housing.

ProGun: What on earth are you writing about?
This is a blog about the problems of Rogers Park.
Derrion Albert was murdered in Roseland, over 20 miles south of here.
His murder, which is appalling, nonetheless has nothing to do with the problems here!

Sock Puppet,

Just leave some 2x4's and long planks near the ashland and pratt intesection to bring the problem closer to home. You canstand there with a camera or wait for it to come out on video/DVD.

Crime travels and is quite reproducable. The beating death was because the same mentality exist 20 miles away and points in between.

Anyone heard what happened to James Brown?

Re: "6914 n. Wayne has the steps necessary for a bright future in careers such as street hustling, littering and vagrancy."

I live in the building at 6914 N. Wayne. The problem for me is the apt unit I have is in the rear (as for street view) I can not see the front entrance. I would really love any help in calling the police anytime anyone is seen on the steps! I have spoke with the landlord about issues after seeing people their already. I have called the police ( who seem to not come) and have had to ask them to leave. I do not want them there either! So please if you see something I don't feel free to call.
