My very very dearest Rogers Park neighbors.
What an absolutely wonderful addition to our community. I will certainly plan to attend this event with my 4 dog-children in tow. I hope to see you all there as we celebrate this brave and noble lady and the support this community center is receiving from our alderman, the most most honoralbe Joe Moore.

I hope it won't be a pro 2016 Olympic bid event. I'll be there with my No Games Chicago button.

Go to nogameschicago.com and print out some signs -- I think it would be great to demonstrate community sentiment for not wanting the olympics in Chicago.

Pat Ryan said the insurance policies are paid for by the 2016 committee (all funded by private donations, i.e., people who are afraid of the mayor and/or want to do olympic business). However, the insurance only kicks in for weird things like acts of terrorism or if a company who pledged money goes broke. It doesn't cover poor ticket sales or failure to get enough private donations. They did have to get additional insurance for the olympic village in case the developers crap out. The cost of the olympic village is the real sticking point because the rest of the venues are on park district land -- OUR PARKS!

The dedication of Willye B White Park should be free of political statements about pro or no olympics. Give this woman her due and leave the politics out of it

i still do not understand why people are so opposed to the Olympics 2016

Why would ticket sales fall in Chicago? They certainly didn't have trouble selling tickets in Seoul, So Korea
21 years ago did they.

Well peace at the park

Well, this is the first time I've ever done this but yes, I've asked Craig to remove the post I made last night about protesting the Olympic Bid at the Willie White Park event. It was selfish and shortsighted of me to think only of my own feelings on the subject.

I agree with MadeinRogersPark. This event is NOT be the time or the place for a protest against holding the Olympics in Chicago in 2016. Before I pressed ENTER, I should have taken into account the hard work and selfless dedication put forth by park staff and the volunteers of the Willie White Park Council as well as the volunteers of the community of Park Councils in Northeast Rogers Park. I did them all a disservice and heartily apologize for not considering the ramifications such a demonstration may have on what is intended to be a positive and uplifting experience for us all.

I intend to be there to show my support for the Park, its staff and the dedicated volunteers who have worked so hard and long to bring it to fruition. I sincerely hope everything goes off without a hitch and everyone enjoys themselves immensely. CHEERS!

- PEACE -

The dedication (conveniently held before the Oct 2 vote in Copenhagen) is definitely a dog and pony show for the Daley Olympic bid plan.

It "should be" free of politics, but the very reason the CPD changed the name of the field house to honor an Olympian was to further Daley's plan. The Park Advisory Council wanted to hold a student essay contest at Gale School to find a woman to honor (being told by the CPD that the next new field house would be named after a woman).

We're being used.

Well, no politics is a nice thought but I have come to believe everything done by politicians in this city has a motive behind it. Here's a link to an article in The Reader about the Olympics - http://www.chicagoreader.com/chicago/the-olympic-myth/Content?oid=1196342 - Besides bankrupting the city, it's very likely that it will hurt, not help tourism.

Well, it's time a council member who fought against privatization said a little here. It wasn't the council's idea to have the school kids research and find a name. It was the brain child of two non-council members who dropped their involvement in the renaming process when the BGC didn't happen. My personal opinion isn’t necessary on the rest of that story but I felt there were more important issues to pursue.

I don't know if any of the commenters have attended any council meetings in the last year; much of what is written is an assumption of sorts. Before, during, and after completion of the building, the council had been making plans for a ceremony. The months flew by and the building had its first anniversary and nothing had been done by the powers we contacted to make an event happen. There was also concern about having it any time around the decision date – since it’s a dedication to the legacy of a woman I probably would have enjoyed knowing. But there is the reality that summer is over and programs are beginning and its time to showcase this facility properly.

Had the majority of protesters of 2008 remained on board they may have been able to help the council advertise, raise funds, write grants, mentor, tutor or fill out volunteer applications for special events and help the community they reside in. They still can if they really want to promote their ‘victory’. Apparently the thrill of protesting turned a corner and they went on to attack their next windmill whether it was local or global. That’s fine, but participation and maintenance is key the success of any ‘victory’.

Having seen the program plans – and having heard from Willye’s friends – this is a dedication to the woman named Willye White not just the Olympian. Willye did more than just the Olympics in her lifetime.
