You've Been Tagged

A reader writes...
Hey Craig, I see the gangers have tagged the Wind sculpture on Pratt.
He wrote more, this was all that I'm printing.

My guess is that the Mayor is cutting back on graffiti cleanup. The neighborhood has seen a large increase in gang tagging and despite calls to 311 - it doesn't seem to get cleaned up.

I'm asssuming someone, anyone, has called Graffiti Blasters to get this cleaned up. 311?

Graffiti Blasters

Graffiti Blasters are real slow -- it took them forever to clean the marks off of the church I attend. In their defense, they do have a big, never-ending job to do. Graffiti is all over the city, and the cleaners can't be everywhere at once.

Now for something off-topic: I did have a fight at the Loyola Park Boxing show this past Friday. I was up against a fire fighter who trains at Hamlin Park. I lost, but I was happy to have finally gotten a match. Both of us received trophies.

I've never seen so much tagging as what I've seen in the past years.

And it's not just around here. Taggers have been "bombing" Lakeview, Uptown, and Edgewater as well with really huge, bold-face tags that cover 3-story walls.

And the crime is rising.... the miscreants can tell that local leadership is asleep at the wheel and that our police dept is underfunded, undermanned, and demoralized.

That is a real drag. Many people put in a lot of time last summer refinishing the sculpture. Nothing is sacred.

Jeffo, you were mugged right there? Was it late at night?

Yeah, North Coast, I think they not only totally caught the powers that be here off guard (if you can call a steady increased in gang crime over the past 10 years "off guard"). That, and the fact thast a lot of people here don't want to believe that there is a gang problem here. This increase in tagging is yet another way for them to show that they are moving about with impunity. I just saw three exampled of bold tagging the other day near Bryn Mawr and Sheridan: a big spraypainted gang name and pitchfork symbol on a relativey new condo on that corner, the inside of a apartment building garage building tagged the same way and a little further south, the same thing on the middle of the sidewalk...all of it done in big PINK(!) spraypaint.

Getting that stuff removed quickly is the key to showing these punks that it won't be tolerated. The longer it takes, the more they get the idea that they run things. I know Graffiti Blasters is busy, but it HAS to be done.

The exact reason why my wife and I moved the hell out of the area!

Question for Been There, who will no doubt comment on this post soon, telling us to shut up and stop whining.

If Joe Moore likes to take credit for the crime situation by repeating the "Crime is down" mantra, shouldnt he be taken to task when crime goes up? Just sayin'.

yeah m21 it was,
its a long story that i dont wish to repeat really, but i was basically trapped by these guys and couldnt get away from them and was kindof pushed to that area.

the folks and people affiliations are still important but i think its breaking down.

think the warriors movie in slow motion.

but in the warriors they didnt even get to finish their "summit"

Chicago - it gets a little tiring hearing the same old thing about you and your wife leaving - where is it you live now, where there is no crime?
I walk by the statue with the dogs all the time and I have always been amazed that it didn't have graffiti - it's either gone or I didn't see it, I'll have to look today. I call the 311 on graffiti all the time, the more people the call, the better. Too bad some of the Olympics promo money isn't being used for crime, police and city services
