Feel Good News from Rogers Park
Hillari, AKA Boxing Tomboy, sent me a photo of the latest crop of young boxers from the Loyola Park (1230 West Greenleaf) Boxing program. Hillari has been part of the program and is an avid supporter of controlled and supervised athletic aggression. As Hillari puts it, "there are always reports of kids acting out, but these boys who spend their time doing something positive -- boxing."
She also sent along a photo of her first boxing trophy. While she tells me she lost her fight, she still earned this award for her participation. Hillari is one of the members in our community who cares about the youth and wants to help lead them in the positive direction. She's someone you should know. And yes, she too has a blog.

So, is just me or are at least one of those "kids" flashing gang signs in the picture?
Kevin,
What gang signs? They're in their boxing stances.
Thanks, Craig for putting this up.
Since I don't have an email to send to you, there's wa a fire at Deluxe Diner St. night/Sun. morning between 1:00AM-1:30AM which has massively wrecked the building
Kevin <---- working hard to stay negative. Foreyes.com has a 50% sale. You better make a run for it before the sale is over.
Good job Tomboy/Craig, helping these kids out.
1 Thanks for BT being BT.
2 Good luck on your next match.
3 Keep working with the kids.
Nope front left and front right are not boxing staces.
They may not be flashing but those are not boxing or martial arts stances.
You guys are nuts. I see one kid is holding a #1 sign and the other is a peace sign.
That's so funny....I was wondering if you've ever seen any gang "signs"....'cuz those...ain't...lol
Now that I look at the picture again, I see peace signs and the #1 sign. But there's no flashing of gang signs, period.
Congrats on the program, guys! I wish nothing but good luck to you all, because you spend your time doing something productive. I'm glad to see the tall kid in the middle in the program. I know him from Sullivan last year. He didn't talk to me much, but the couple of times we did, he was always nice.
I don't know why you guys are getting so bent out of shape over a picture. There is NO gang signs in this picture, and I'm sure Boxing Tomboy wouldn't have taken the picture if she knew they'd flash signs. I personally think these are good kids. And it's good to see a peace sign. That's the one and only sign I ever throw up to people or a camera. And the kids just wanted to be funny. So what?
Thanks for putting this story up, Craig. It made me feel good. And thanks for being a role model/inspiriation, BT.
AvondaleLoganSquareCrimeFighter,
Thanks for the compliment! The tall kid's name is Kenny, and he is nice.
Boxing Tomboy, yep, that's his name. I knew it but I didn't know if I should go on here and say it out of privacy. I'm glad to know he's in the program :).
