This afternoon around 12:45 PM: Scanner reports a man got beat down and possibly robbed by a group of thugs at 6828 North Greenview. The multiple offenders fled west on Farwell, and the injured victim was taken to St. Francis in Evanston to be treated for a head wound.

Craig: Ennui cafe at Sheridan and Lunt appears to be closed. It's only opened a couple of days this week, the art is off the walls and the phone number is turned off. Today (Sat the 24th of July) it is closed again. Odd thing is that they just had a bunch of new chairs delivered. Recently they had switched to cheap restaurant supply coffee and the WiFi had been off for a bit. Hate to see another RP business go under.
Dennis, this is sad news and very surprising. I was at Ennui with a friend just a couple of weeks ago, and it seemed about as well-populated as it usually is.
It will indeed be a sad thing to see a small, local, UNSUBSIDIZED business go under, especially a place with Ennui's charm. I'll miss the place as it was and I'll also miss their beautiful chocolate cake and great cheesecake!
Let's hope it ain't so.
Does anyone know the type of victim? Normal citizen or fellow thug? My concerns about the violence and shootings are about whether they're random acts of violence on regular folks or is it gang on gang type stuff. I had to clean up bloody rags from the incident yesterday. Someone threw bloody paper towels across the street from the incident. Don't know if it was the ambulance crew or what.
Ennui - I also hate to see a local business go under but I have seen it coming for a while. The person at the counter didn't really seem to care about the customers. The coffee wasn't really very good and I had to wait in line a long time for it. Then they told me they no longer could afford to put out sweetener (definitely not a good sign). No outside furniture was put out until very recently. Perhaps they didn't aggressively go after biz enough and just let people languish for hours at the tables without purchasing.
Ennui moved everything out tonight. Place is now mostly empty. Yes, the coffee sucked and the staff were unhelpful. The signs had been coming for a while. As they were loading furniture in the truck tonight I talked to the owner. He claimed that they had simply lost their lease and the building management had refused to renew the lease. But from the way he said it the story didn't sound right. Something seemed off in what he was telling me. I don't know what it was. We live in this building and I will find a chance to ask the management what happened.
What I miss was the Ennui from ten years ago (back when the counter was closer to the door) when there were friendly and helpful staff and good coffee and it was a welcoming place. After it was sold it went downhill.
Yeah I noticed that ennui had been sucking for a long time,
Totally understaffed. (One guy behind the counter?)
I think Common Cup helped put in out of business, but there are more than enough coffee drinkers and students to keep a bunch of cafes going around here.
Will miss it and its name,
Perfect name for a cafe.
I also miss the horror poster shop next door. That guy was interesting he lived in the store and he maintained a couple hearses in the area. Hearses are one of the best buys for cars, low mileage.
I would be shocked if another cafe doesnt take its place soon.
Perfect set up and location,
just like pannini pannini was replaced with a better ethipioan coffee shop,
Not sure where to ask this so I will start here. Last night there was a high speed chase going the wrong way up the 1400 block of Birchwood Ave. and continued towards Clark. It was an SUV with its lights off followed by at least 3 cop cars. It was by far the most messed up thing I have seen in my 5 years living in the neighborhood. Are there any outlets that may provide insight to how this chase ended?
As I remember it, the chase ended with "OJ" being arrested. He wasn't convicted of anything though, until years later.
