Potential 49th Ward Aldermanic Candidates

Here's the scorecard, so far.

Blane Roberts is collecting signatures for a run at Alderman of the 49th Ward. He tells me he is most definitely going to run. Blane has worked for Alderman Tunney and was on the Don Gordon for Alderman campaign team that narrowly lost to Alderman Moore in a run-off in 2007.

Ben Myers for the 49th Ward put together this website.

Joyce Shanahan doesn't say she's running for Alderman on the website, but gossip bloggers have indicated she is running. Or not.

And, of course, Joe Moore is running for reelection, not Mayor. Seeing Gay Chicago Magazine is making endorsements for this race, I'll be steering clear of backing any candidate, or favoring one over the other on this blog, this time around.

Any others out there?

Well! Some opposition at last!

Blane needs to get more people out there collecting signatures and he needs to get a website up,fast, to tell people where he is and what he wants for this ward and how he intends to accomplish his goals.

I'll be looking at the others, too. Hey, candidates, get out here, you don't have too much longer, only a month, to collect your signatures.

Completely off topic.
Does anyone know what happened to Lorraine Swanson & her Lake Effect News site?
It hasn't been updated since the beginning of August.

I'd like to hear and see more of these candidates.

So far, Ben Myers and Joyce Shanahan are the only ones who even have websites, and they're both extremely vague about exactly what they want to accomplish, their vision for the ward, and exactly how they will accomplish their goals.

One of the others has only a facebook page, and the other MIGHT have a linkedin page, but has no contact info on the page. That won't do.

We also want to hear more on their politics. Where on they on such things as privatising our water works, improving public transit/schools/roads/ water and sewer infrastructure/police and fire protection? Where will they get the money and how will they solve the city's financial problems?

Awhile back, I wrote to Shanahan and asked her questions concerning her goals for the ward and her view of the main problems here, and received no reply. Her website provides no answers or specifics.

Come on, candidates, you have to do more and reveal more of yourselves if you want to take on a 4-term incumbent.

I'm sure there's a photo out there of Blane's ass hanging out of a pair of leather chaps as he walked in the Gay Pride parade one year.

Craiggers, I don't give a damn what they look like or what they wear as long as they have detailed, explicitly stated goals and a vision for the ward that coincides with mine and that of other people around here who want to live in a clean, crime-free, vibrant, urban environment with the kind of quirky charm this area has, but without the problems we still have.

They all seem like nice enough people, but nice isn't enough.

And nothing's enough if the voters can't even find them to affix their signatures to a petition.

Get your websites up there, candidates, with your address and your views and plans and ideas, and a place where people can go to sign your petition to get on the ballot. I haven't come across a single person circulating a petition up here, and I'm on foot all over the neighborhood.

Are they all Obamunists?

I am having a hard time believing this, but Joe may just be the best candidate this time around. After his close, close call last time, it seems to me that he stepped up his game and has been a better aldercreature focused more on the Ward than outside political interests...
With a new Mayor coming having a Alder person with seniority may be more beneficial than a newbe, but that said, I hope that we have a STRONG contender to challenge him.

but thought you guys would find it funny.

I went with my wife to chuckies bar last friday and we watched someone take a shower through the glass brick shower that faces morse.

Where else can that happen?
Its the building with the flowershop in it. Very very odd to have a shower facing the main drag like that and then to have it in pure glass brick. Everyone there got a kick out of it. The guy was taking a shower for 15-20 minutes.

Dear I live here too....as far as I am concerned Joe has not stepped up his game when it comes to North of Howard. We still have drug dealing, gang banging, absenteee landlords, and general mayhem 24/7 in my corner of the ward. After recent shootings in the neighborhood, I emailed him and asked him what he was doing in conjunction with the police to stop this. He replied I needed to go to CAPS meetings and get more involved. If he had ever attended a CAPS meeting he would know I have been to every CAPS meeting for the past 3 years. And it has not helped one bit in my neighborhood.

I think you should run Craig.

Hello followers of The Broken Hearts of Rogers Park. This is Louis Herrera-Baker. I've been a follower of this blog as well and love reading all of the comments. I want to sincerely thank all of my volunteers for working so hard to get all of our petitions circulated and signed. We completed a lot of work in a very short period of time. Rogers Park is one of the best wards in the city. After many discussions with my team and husband Brett, I've decided not to file my petition to enter the Aldermanic race. My main focus will be with my husband, our son and our growing family. I will continue to be politically active and will assist Rogers Park's leadership to help make our community a safer place for our children to thrive. I'd like to take this opportunity to give my support to our current Alderman Joe Moore. I've been able to meet with him and other community leaders and feel strongly that Alderman Joe Moore is the leader we need for Rogers Park to flourish. I respect Alderman Moore and his leadership for our little corner of Chicago. Thank you all for your support and know that my heart is with you and everyone in our community.
