Person Hit By Metra (Update)

A southbound Metra train apparently hit a northbound running man near Devon/Ravenswood this morning around 11:00 a.m. The conductor said the train was traveling at 30 MPH. Scanner reports the conductor said the man was running right at the train. Police are on the tracks investigating the situation.

Update: 6200 North Ridge is where the investigation centers around. There seems to be confusion between Union Pacific and Metra as to who has jurisdiction. Police say it was a passenger train, not a freight train that hit the person.

Jesus, was this guy trying to catch the train? This was not necessary.

I have seen how frantic people get to catch a Metra train and how these frantic people will lose their wits and dash across a gated crossing with the train approaching at 60MPH.

Please people!! It is NEVER that damn important to catch the train! You do NOT have time to run across the tracks if the gates are down and the thing is within a quarter mile of the crossing!! Miss the train, dammit.

Suicide!

Craig Gernhardt said...

Chicago Breaking News has the train being a Northbound with the accident in the 7000 block.

That seems impossible. How can a northbound train drag someone south to the 6200 block?

From what I heard on the scanner. Chicago Breaking News seems way off.

Chicago Breaking News is all screwed up on this one. For some reason, the fire & police were mistakenly sent to the station at Lunt.
It was a suicide at Granville & the train couldn't stop until Devon.
I heard the horn blow & the train stopped. I figured it out immediately.
We went over there & saw the fire crews & a couple of cops going up to the tracks both at Granville & Thome.
But the majority of them were at Granville, so that's where I assume this fool was hit.
I received 8 email alerts from Metra Sunday on this. I'm signed up for them for this line. Three trains were canceled because of this, the one that hit him, which ran to Rogers Park & dropped off the passengers who were put on the train that left Madison St. at 12:35 PM & two others, both southbounds from Waukegan, that was to use this one on the flip & one that was to leave around noon as the tracks were blocked for about two hours.

And their hasn't been a freight train around here in several years, not since Tempel Steel & S&C stopped get freight service. The only non-commuter trains here are the maintenance of way trains & the once a year rail testing car from Sperry.

Could you people make this story any more confusing?

Chip: How did we make this more confusing?
Ignore Chicago Breaking News, they got it all wrong.
Also ignore The North Coast in this one, there's no station or crossing where he committed suicide. I think he wrote his comment based on the totally wrong story on Chicago Breaking News.

The facts: Northbound Metra train # 321 which was scheduled to leave the Rogers Park station & Lunt & Ravenswood at 10:52 AM on Sunday was running several minutes late.
At 10:54 AM, the engineer sounded his horn once & the train stopped. A person decided to commit suicide by train at Granville Ave.
For reasons unknown, both Chicago fire & police were mistakenly sent to the station, instead of the suicide location.
Because the tracks are always blocked for at least 90 minutes after these incidents, southbound train #805 was canceled as it would have been stopped by the crews on the tracks.
Train #321 finally went to Rogers Park, dropped off all its passengers & was then canceled. The passengers from #321 were picked up by # 803.
I believe most Metra trains have video cameras facing forward, so Metra, Chicago Police, Cook County Medical Examiner & Union Pacific officials can review the tape to determine what happened.
No freight trains run on this section of the tracks & haven't in at about 10 years.

As of Monday night, I haven't read who the suicide was.

I reported a southbound train/northbound running man because that's the direction all scanner chat at the moment of investigation was indicating the path of direction.

Clark St. said...

I'm not blaming you Craig.
It appears the cops screwed up all the info on this & both Metra & Chicago Breaking News followed their lead.
I wonder if the cops don't know that the trains run left handed here & that's why they had the directions wrong?

This am while doing my pick up litter run I noticed some new tagging at 1319 w morse, the side of the video store that is going out of business.
Some pretty full liquor bottles were in front of the adjacent building 6921 N wayne.

The tagging looks to be brazers, its smaller in black on unpainted brick, called it into 311 this am.
Didnt see it yesterday so looks like this happened last night.
Its right by the back gangway of 6921 n Wayne that has the wonderful barbed wire about the metal gate.

I also let Tony of A and P management know about it.

11/27/10 My local update....

FYI bangers were out on Morse Thanksgiving Morning. Called 911 to let them know and they did park a unit on Morse that day.

I really think that golden mini mart needs to be shut down.
That owner is so clueless.

He is holding that stretch of Morse down. Alot of people would recognize that the area is getting better and then try to cater to the new influx of people.

Not this guy. He continues to cater to the lowest elements of society. He couldve kept his liquor license if he had had one iota of a brain cell and he wouldve fixed his store up.

Nope, this store is a rats nest and is unsafe, the aisles are too narrow and the space between the front counter and the aisles is way too narrow.

A great place to buy cigarrettes, scratch offs and fruit juice to mix with your vodka, and maybe some debbie snack cakes and hohos and thats about it.

We already have a seven eleven right close by.
There is the better morse convenient store and the two decent korean liquor stores and the two dollar stores.

So he is superfluous.

The exterior of the building has been redone.
The sidewalk has been redone, the gang etchings covered over in the sidewalk, a new garbage can and flower/tree fence put up, etc, etc, etc, but the gangs are still there hanging out at the golden mini mart.

And of late the local morons are using the leprecan portipotty to smoke dope or take a quick piss, which is better than public urination.

That portipotty needs to go soon.

well, looks like we as a neigborhood are being complacent, 11/28/10

Morse from glenwood to greenview looks like something out of a ghetto french connection.

One lone guy at glenwood and morse right outside of reside on morse, another 3 big bruisers at the future home of the historical society, another scattered ones and twos of lookouts? walking around, all sorts of bogus activity on morse, this is around 12 noon, I called 911 to let them know.

So let me get this straight.
We had Morse redone just to let the bangers continue on with business as usual?
I hope not, this is complete bullcrap.

Cmon people dont put up with it!
I picked up some trash on my usual walk, and picked up infront of the Common Cup,

Maybe Im just being stupid, eh?
But I wont stop,
But is anyone else out there going to help?

There will be more violence and drivebys if this behavior is allowed to continue

The police need to know where the bangers are.

Its like this,
Police guy goes to work and gets car, he/she ask him/herself where are the bangers today?

Do they say to themselves,
oh they magincally disappeared and then are shocked when they get a call about them?

I can tell you, after a little bit of looking around Morse and or Howard you will find them on a nice day FORSURE.

Bangers in general like to hang out when decent people arent around as much, like sundays, or weekdays when everyone is at work.

Is it really that hard to think like a banger and then anticipate where they will be and then discourage their activity with your presence?

Or you could just cause yourself to become delusional and then believe that they are just out of sight out of mind and after some magical day in the year they go in hibernation?

THEY DONT,
every single nice day when decent people arent around they will be out. like today 11/28/10

DUH.

Thanks for trying to make the neighborhood a cleaner better place.
We have had our differences but I really appreciate your efforts and wanted to take a moment to thank you.
Good Luck and enjoy the new street scape.

I called the Ward 49 office yesterday to let them know that the LepreCAN should be removed, its just a haven for homeless and nuts who want a quick place to smoke a joint.

The portipotty is right at morse and wayne right outside of NICOS Morse Gyros
