Not -So-Special Service Area #24

Snow Removal done by a few Property Owners who couldn't wait.
How many others in this area had to do the same?

Christmas Day brought an inch to a couple of inches of snow. It looked pretty, but for one property owner it was a accident waiting to happen.

Morningside Senior Home-1250 W. Morse, tired of waiting for the SSA #24 special snow removal crew, did it on their own. The janitor for the property removed all the snow from 1220 W. Morse to 1320 W. Morse, end to end, every bit. And.. with-out using any rock salt. A couple of other property owners also did it themselves, not waiting until it iced up. LAMS Real Estate did a great job as did the Heartland Cafe, they did it themselves, too. One of nine commissioners for SSA#24, Katy Hogan, couldn't wait, doing this snow removal job on their own.

It seems the Chicago Streets and Sanitation crew, the "regular guys" who work for your "basic property taxes", the workers these SSA's are replacing at an alarming rate, did their job last night...no problem. According to Streets and Sanitation, "we started with 80 plows and we needed more, so in the end 162 plows were out and cleaning the streets last night." If they waited until this morning, it would have been packed down and a icy mess, causing accidents.

As touted by DevCorupt Executive Director Kimberly Bares, they go the extra mile in snow removal and charging very little, you paid $3,256 in 2004 for a tractor to remove the snow, you paid another $315 dollars a month to store the tractor in one of our aldermatic campaign donors shops. They charged you a $1000 a year to maintain this equipment. Oh, you pay the $1600 a year insurance. Wait, there's more, we need to pay someone operate this tractor, you need to pay a high paid manager to make sure someone can operate this tractor.

Checking around to see what other businesses thought, the only one open was the Morse Avenue Open Air Drug Market & Crack-Ho Sidewalk Casino. Said one Morse Avenue Open Air Drug Market Salesman working this morning, "If I slip and fall, I will sue the City!" "Plus, with the snow all over, you can't see where the dice are after you throw them."

The SSA tractor finally started and ran it's "Ceremonial Trip" down Morse Avenue.

This only displaced the snow and really packed down the snow it missed, causing icy patches everywhere.

The Morse Avenue Fruit and Meat Market had taken care of their area themselves, removing all the snow and salting their own area.

Mr. Goldberg, a SSA #24 commissioner, wasn't as lucky, his "area" is hard packed "Ice and Snow."
